Musculoskeletal infections in patients with human immunodeficiency virus infection.

Musculoskeletal infections constitute an unusual clinical manifestation in patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Available information about patients' characteristics and their clinical course has been obtained mainly from case reports and small retrospective studies. Our retrospective study is the largest in the literature providing detailed information about the clinical and laboratory characteristics of HIV-infected patients with different musculoskeletal infections. We identified 30 patients with various infections of the musculoskeletal system during a 5-year period …

Pathological findings in harbour seals (Phoca vitulina): 1996-2005.

Between 1996 and 2005 the carcasses of 355 harbour seals originating from the coast of Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, were investigated for pathological changes. The animals were collected before (n=280) and after (n=75) the second phocine distemper virus (PDV) epizootic in 2002. The seals were either found dead or were killed due to severe illness. Necropsy was performed in each case, in addition to histopathological, immunohistochemical, microbiological and parasitological examinations. Throughout the period of study, the respiratory and alimentary tracts were the organ systems most consistent

Occupational risks and musculoskeletal complaints among industrial workers: a cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: Work-related musculoskeletal disorders result from the overuse of the musculoskeletal system and insufficient time for the structures to recover. They are generally characterized by chronic pain, paresthesia, feeling of heaviness and fatigue, especially in the upper extremities, concomitantly or not, with an insidious onset. OBJECTIVES: To characterize musculoskeletal complaints and occupational risks in workers with work-related musculoskeletal disorders. METHODS: A cross-sectional observational study of 60 participants in a Workers' Health Reference Center with clinical and i…

Maintaining and restoring mobility in middle and old age: the importance of the soft tissues.

For many older individuals, impairment of musculoskeletal function, especially weakness, stiffness, and pain, cause progressive disability, thereby limiting mobility and decreasing the quality of life. With advancing age, musculoskeletal soft tissue function declines, susceptibility to degenerative diseases and injuries increases, and the ability to recover from disease or injury declines; these changes increase the probability of impairment (Fig. 1). However, the function of individual cells, tissues, or organ systems may remain stable or even improve temporarily with age, and a number of int

Musculoskeletal Chronic Graft versus Host Disease-A Rare Complication to Allogeneic Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant: A Case-Based Report and Review of the Literature.

Musculoskeletal graft versus host disease (GVHD) is a rare manifestation of chronic GVHD (cGVHD) following allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT). Left untreated, the disease can cause extensive damage to muscle tissue and joints. We describe a 62-year-old male with musculoskeletal GVHD and generalized muscle pain and stiffness. In addition, we performed a systemic literature review based on published cases of musculoskeletal GVHD between 1983 and 2019. We identified 85 cases, 62% male and 38% female with an age of 4-69 years and median age of 39 years at diagnosis. The

Musculoskeletal perturbations of deep space radiation: Assessment using a Gateway MRI.

Human space exploration expansion from Low-Earth Orbit to deep space is accelerating the need to monitor and address the known health concerns related to deep space radiation. The human musculoskeletal system is vulnerable to these risks (alongside microgravity) and its health reflects the well-being of other body systems. Multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is an important approach for assessing temporal physiological changes in the musculoskeletal system. We propose that ultra-low-field MRI provides an optimal low Size Weight and Power (SwaP) solution for non-invasively monitori…

Neuromuscular Control Deficits and the Risk of Subsequent Injury after a Concussion: A Scoping Review.

An emerging area of research has identified that an increased risk of musculoskeletal injury may exist upon returning to sports after a sport-related concussion. The mechanisms underlying this recently discovered phenomenon, however, remain unknown. One theorized reason for this increased injury risk includes residual neuromuscular control deficits that remain impaired despite clinical recovery. Thus, the objectives of this review were: (1) to summarize the literature examining the relationship between concussion and risk of subsequent injury and (2) to summarize the literature for one mechani

Musculoskeletal diagnosis in adolescents.

Musculoskeletal complaints are a common reason for adolescents to seek medical attention. It is estimated that musculoskeletal problems account for up to 20% of visits to primary care practitioners. Many studies have shown the inadequacies of training of medical students and primary care residents in musculoskeletal medicine. Also, many practitioners do not feel comfortable in the management of common problems in this area. A general outline for approaching adolescents with musculoskeletal complaints is presented in this article and is not unlike the approach to other clinical problems. This o

Vaccine-associated lupus and related organ involvements: A pharmacovigilance analysis of VAERS database 1990-2025.

OBJECTIVES: The relationships between vaccines and the development of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and related organ involvements remain unclear. METHODS: We analyzed data from the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) during the period of 1990 to 2025 to determine the incidence of vaccine-associated SLE over time. The relationships between vaccines and the development of SLE and organ involvements were assessed by disproportionality and case-control analyses. RESULTS: 1976 (0.017%) cases of vaccine-associated lupus were identified amongst 11,301,263 adverse events (AEs) repor

The Musculoskeletal Involvement After Mild to Moderate COVID-19 Infection.

COVID-19, a disease caused by the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, has been drastically affecting the daily lives of millions of people. COVID-19 is described as a multiorgan disease that affects not only the respiratory tract of infected individuals, but it has considerable effects on the musculoskeletal system, causing excessive fatigue, myalgia, arthralgia, muscle weakness and skeletal muscle damage. These symptoms can persist for months, decreasing the quality of life of numerous individuals. Curiously, most studies in the scientific literature focus on patients who were hospitalized due to S…

Shear-Wave Elastography: Basic Physics and Musculoskeletal Applications.

In the past 2 decades, sonoelastography has been progressively used as a tool to help evaluate soft-tissue elasticity and add to information obtained with conventional gray-scale and Doppler ultrasonographic techniques. Recently introduced on clinical scanners, shear-wave elastography (SWE) is considered to be more objective, quantitative, and reproducible than compression sonoelastography with increasing applications to the musculoskeletal system. SWE uses an acoustic radiation force pulse sequence to generate shear waves, which propagate perpendicular to the ultrasound beam, causing transien…

The efficacy of bedside chest ultrasound: from accuracy to outcomes.

For many respiratory physicians, point-of-care chest ultrasound is now an integral part of clinical practice. The diagnostic accuracy of ultrasound to detect abnormalities of the pleura, the lung parenchyma and the thoracic musculoskeletal system is well described. However, the efficacy of a test extends beyond just diagnostic accuracy. The true value of a test depends on the degree to which diagnostic accuracy efficacy influences decision-making efficacy, and the subsequent extent to which this impacts health outcome efficacy. We therefore reviewed the demonstrable levels of test efficacy for…

Cirrhosis-related musculoskeletal disease: radiological review.

Musculoskeletal problems in patients with liver disease are common; however, they are not so well described in the literature. Therefore, there is a need to collate information on these disorders, as their incidence is on a constant rise and some of these pathologies can severely debilitate the patient's quality of life. These disorders are parietal wall varices with or without bleeding, spontaneous intramuscular haematoma (e.g. rectus sheath), abdominal wall hernia, anasarca, hepatic osteodystrophy, septic arthritis, osteomyelitis, necrotizing fasciitis, osseous metastases from hepatocellular
