Oral myiasis affecting paediatric patients: a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Oral myiasis is a rare condition caused by Dipteran larvae that feed on living or dead tissues, ingested food or body fluids. It affects immunocompromised individuals with low socioeconomic status or those unable to maintain proper hygiene. Cases of oral myiasis are scarce but debilitating in children. We conducted a systematic review to understand the nature of disease, its causative factors, treatment and ways to prevent the occurrence of this condition among children. METHODOLOGY: The review was carried out in accordance with Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review an…

Eristalis tenax intestinal myiasis: An electron microscope study.

Myiasis is the infestation of live vertebrates (humans or animals) with dipterous larvae. Eristalis tenax, belonging to order Diptera and family Syrphidae, seldom causes accidental myiasis, usually due to ingestion of contaminated food or water by humans. Here, we report a case of intestinal myiasis in a male from Alexandria, Egypt, complaining of frequent passage of small worms in his stool. A larva and a pupa were presented to the laboratory and examined macroscopically, and then studied by a scanning electron microscope. E. tenax (rat-tailed maggots) were diagnosed. Rarely diagnosed worldwi…

[Case of pneumonia associated sepsis accompaning pulmonary myiasis].

Myiasis; is defined as the infestation of dead or living tissues of humans and animals by the diptera larvae. It is prevalent all over the world, especially in tropical and subtropical countries with low socioeconomic status. Myiasis of humans has been associated with low socioeconomic status, alcoholism, mental or neurological diseases, poor personal hygiene, patients with varicose veins, diabetes, malnutrition, advanced stage cancer, pediculosis, immunosuppression, sexually transmitted disease, gingivitis and other oral cavity lesions. Myiasis is most commonly seen as skin invasion in the hu…

Exuberant Oral Myiasis Caused by Musca domestica (Housefly).

Tissues of oral cavity, when invaded by the parasitic larvae of houseflies, the condition is called as oral myiasis. It is a rare disease that is most common in developing countries and is associated with conditions leading to persistent mouth opening along with poor oral hygiene, suppurative lesions, severe halitosis and maxillofacial trauma. A case of exuberant oral myiasis in a 42-year-old female patient is described here. She reported with swelling, pain, mobility of teeth and foul odor. Diagnosis was based primarily on history and clinical features. Management included use of turpentine o…

Orbital myiasis complicating squamous cell carcinoma of eyelid.

Myiasis is infestation of the body by fly maggots. Immobile patients with skin wounds in exposed areas are at high risk of developing myiasis. We report a case of orbital myiasis from the species Chrysomya bezziana complicating squamous cell carcinoma of the eyelid. Magnetic resonance imaging of the orbit is useful for delineating the extent of the infestation and identifying residual maggots. In extensive orbital myiasis, exenteration is needed to prevent intracranial extension of tissue destruction.

Extensive oral lesion colonized with 601 myiasis larvae.

Myiasis is a type of infection caused by the larvae of flying insects. This paper reports a case of a 72-year-old Caucasian man who was referred to the Infectology Department of Oswaldo Cruz University Hospital (Pernambuco-Brazil) for urgent treatment as he was malnourished and dehydrated. He had a facial and buccal lesion colonized with larvae and was extremely debilitated. The surgical and clinical treatment indicated at the first moment was the surgical removal of the larvae. But, after two days, some larvae were still present and therefore 12 mg of ivermectin was administered. At the end o…

Furuncular myiasis: unusual case of African Dermatobia hominis.

Human cutaneous myiasis is a common disease in endemic tropical zones. Increased international travel has produced increases in imported cases. We present an unusual patient with myiasis infestation of the leg caused by Dermatobia hominis, which manifested after returning from the Democratic Republic of Congo. This particular infestation has not been reported in Morocco prior to this case. Furuncular cutaneous miyasis must be considered when travellers exhibit draining nodules. Medical treatment consists of occlusion of the furuncular punctum with vaseline to stimulate extrusion of the larva o…

[Update on Dermatobia hominis: South American furuncular myiasis].

Furuncular myiasis is an infestation of the skin caused by Dermatobia hominis larvae known as "ver macaque" in French Guyana, "berne" in Brazil, "torsalo" in Colombia, or "human botfly" in English-language literature. It has identical features in man and domestic mammals. The primary lesion consists of a boil-like inflammatory papule with a central punctum exuding a serosanguinous discharge. The respiratory sinus of the D. hominis larvae may be visible through the punctum. Myiasis secondary to D. hominis accounts for 10% of imported tropical dermatosis observed in Paris. Diagnosis of furuncula…

Cutaneous myiasis presenting as chronic furunculosis--case report.

Myiasis is the infection of tissue or organ of living humans or animals by the maggot or larval stages of flies. In Africa, the most common fly responsible for cutaneous myiasis is the tumbu fly, Cordylobia anthropophaga. We present two cases of cutaneous myiasis seen on the upper abdominal wall and anterior chest wall. Both were initially diagnosed as furuncle (common boil), but from high index of suspicion of myiasis, followed by application of petroleum jelly and palm oil to occlude the spiracle and the expulsion of larva stage of Cordylobia anthropophaga the diagnoses in both cases were co…
