Detection of flashing areas attributed to the frog cardiac function in the vagosympathetic trunk placed into a high frequency electric field.

In a high frequency electric field, two flashing areas were observed during each contraction of the heart in the vagosympathetic trunk of a paralyzed frog with an intact brain. One area with a higher diameter was moving along the nerve from the heart at a speed of 16.6 ± 0.2 m/s. It was identified as afferent. Another area with a smaller diameter was spreading along the nerve towards the venous sinus of the frog heart at a speed of 5.6 ± 0.3 m/s, and it was efferent.

Evaluation of myocardial relaxation in conditions of cardiac remodeling.

The term cardiodynamics refers to dynamic events associated with cardiac contraction and relaxation. The occurring wave of excitement spreads very quickly along the entire atrial musculature and after a brief AV retention it affects all muscle cells of the ventricles. Excitation, that is, the increase in action potentials, precedes the contraction of the myocardium, which follows the "all or none" rule. Each contraction results in relaxation of the myocardium, so that the contraction and relaxation cycles continually follow each other in succession. The entire cardiodynamics, hemnodinamics, i.

Potentiation of atrial contractility by paired pacing augments ventricular preload and systolic performance.

BACKGROUND: Paired electrical stimulation and postextrasystolic potentiation (PESP) of contractility has been extensively studied in ventricular myocardium, but less is known about PESP of atrial contractility. Our aim was to determine whether PESP of atrial contractility could augment left ventricular (LV) preload and improve LV systolic performance. METHODS AND RESULTS: A paired electrical stimulus closely following the pacing stimulus was applied to isolated atrial and ventricular myocardium from 4 dog hearts, and the interval dependent force potentiation was examined. In isolated atrial m

The effects of alcohol on the heart.

We have discussed in this review many features and possible mechanisms responsible for the development of alcoholic cardiomyopathy. The evidence suggests that defects in myofibrillar protein turnover occur in both acute and chronic alcohol studies. Possible mechanisms to explain poor contractile function include alterations in cellular calcium, magnesium or phosphate homeostasis. The toxic effects of acetaldehyde or the formation of fatty acid ethyl esters may cause impairment of mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation. Alternatively, reduced amounts of heat shock proteins may result in poor a

Rate-responsive pacing based on sympathetic activity.

Modern pacemaker technology makes the adaptation of pacing rate to haemodynamic requirements possible. The most ambitious approach aims at restoration of the physiological closed-loop system by utilising the information that is supplied by the autonomic nervous system (ANS) and extracted from myocardial contractile performance. Measurement is accomplished by the impedance method, with the stimulation electrode as measuring electrode. The ventricular inotropic parameter (VIP) has been identified as an ANS-dependent parameter. A special detection algorithm RQ (regional effective slope quantity)

[A case of mitral valve prolapse associated with unusual posterior wall motion of the left ventricle: where has the myocardial theory gone?].

A case with mitral valve prolapse was reported in which unusual movement of the posterior left ventricular wall was observed. The patient was a 45-year-old woman. Physical examination revealed loud multiple clicks at the apex. An electrocardiogram revealed T wave inversion in leads 2, 3 and aVF. Two-dimensional and M-mode echocardiography disclosed mid-systolic buckling of the mitral valve and late systolic 'dip' in the posterior wall of the left ventricle. An exaggerated excursion of the posterior wall during early diastole was also recorded by M-mode echocardiography. Pulsed and M-mode color

[Synthesis of chlormadinol acetate-3-beta-O-alpha-1-arabinofuranosides with positive inotropic action].

The synthesis of chlormadinol acetate-3 beta-O-alpha-L-arabinofuranoside (3; 17 alpha-Acetoxy-6-chloro-pregna-4,6-diene-20-one-3 beta-O-alpha-L- arabinofuranoside) is described. Glycosidation of chlormadinol acetate (1) was accomplished with excess 2,3,5-tri-O-benzyl-alpha-L-arabinofuranosyl chloride, Fétizon reagent, mercury cyanide and bromide in toluene at room temperature. Debenzoylation into compound 3 was carried out with methanol/methylen chloride saturated with ammonia at low temperature. Surprisingly, substance 3 shows positive inotropic effects on cats in vivo, whereas the aglycone 1

Do human cardiac beta-2 adrenoceptors play a (patho)physiological role in regulation of heart rate and/or contractility?

There can be no doubt that in human heart in addition to beta 1-adrenoceptors, functional beta 2-adrenoceptors exist. Their (patho)physiological role in regulating heart rate and/or contractility, however, is still an open question. Under normal physiological conditions cardiac beta 2-adrenoceptors may not be of functional importance, since heart rate and contractility seem to be under the control of noradrenaline that in the human heart acts nearly exclusively at beta 1-adrenoceptors. However, in situations of stress when large amounts of adrenaline are released from the adrenal medulla addit

[Fetal systolic time intervals. A non-invasive parameter for assessing the intrauterine condition of the fetus].

Various methods are employed in obstetric prophylaxis and treatment to assess the intrauterine condition of the foetus. The systolic time-intervals appear to be a promising new method because they reflect the contractility of the foetal heart which is a reflection of various physiological factors indluding hypoxia and asphyxia. Monitoring of the foetal systolic time intervals is therefore a more sensitive parameter of cardiac function than the foetal heart rate alone. By measurement of the foetal systolic time-intervals, it is therefore theoretically possible to evaluate the intrauterine situa

[Analysis of the shape of the left ventricle by studying the regional curvature and power spectrum. I. Methodology and results in normal subjects].

Quantitative analysis of left ventricular shape, obtained by measuring the regional curvatures and power spectrum of the harmonics of left ventricular outlines, is a useful method that has seldom been used in clinical research because of the need for a reliable and replicable method. The curvature of each point of an outline is the reciprocal of the radius of the circle that best fits a segment of the arc (window) centred at any specified point. We proposed a method based on the rate of change of the tangent vector with respect to the change in arc length, normalized for the width of the consi

ECG left anterior fascicular block reveals diverse patterns on scintigraphic phase analysis.

Left anterior fascicular block (LAFB) remains an uncertain diagnosis by scalar ECG, particularly with coexisting inferior infarction. To assess the use of phase analysis in LAFB, left ventricular phase and amplitude maps were evaluated in the 70-degree left anterior oblique projection in eight control patients and 13 patients with LAFB who met the ECG criteria of Warner et al. The left ventricular region was divided into anterior (A) and inferior (I) segments. Contraction patterns were assessed by examination of the sequence of phase angles (phi), relative contraction time of the anterior vers

Development of the rabbit model for studying the effects of propranolol on cardiac contractility: relationship of intravenous pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics.

The New Zealand white rabbit (3-4 kg) was chosen as an experimental model to determine the effects of propranolol, by intravenous bolus administration, on cardiac contractility. The cardiovascular effects were measured by systolic time interval recordings for up to 8 h. The study was performed on two groups of animals with 5 rabbits receiving active drug and another 5 rabbits receiving saline placebo. All animals were anesthetized by parenteral administration of urethane/acepromazine. The results indicated that at 15 min after intravenous administration, propranolol caused a maximum decrease i

A comparison of traditional wall motion assessment and quantitative shape analysis: a new method for characterizing left ventricular function in humans.

To forego the need to arbitrarily choose coordinate, reference, and indexing systems and to make other assumptions mandated by traditional methods of measuring wall motion, a technique of regional function analysis based on shape characteristics and pattern recognition was developed. The method is based on curvature analysis, a fundamental shape parameter, and is adaptive to the complex geometry of cineangiographic ventricular images. Quantitative shape parameters were compared to a standard method of regional function analysis (center-line method) in 130 patients. Quantitative shape and wall

Experimental models for studying the effects of ethanol on the myocardium.

The ability to induce alcoholic cardiomyopathy has been tested in a variety of animal species. Myocardial alterations consistent with subclinical heart disease have been produced in many of these studies through a direct effect of ethanol or its metabolites upon the heart or a neurohumoral mechanism. In the rat most studies have, however, failed to finding diminished contractility in the basal state. In long-term animals the acute left ventricular responses to isoproterenol and calcium as well as pacing were reduced. Long-term studies in mongrel dogs fed 36 per cent of calories as ethanol prod

Isolated tricuspid valve prolapse diagnosed by echocardiography.

Isolated tricuspid valve prolapse in the absence of mitral valve prolapse or other cardiac defects has not been previously noted. This report describes a patient who on both M-mode and two-dimensional echocardiography demonstrated tricuspid prolapse without other associated abnormalities. The implications of this finding are discussed.
