Carbon Nanotube- and Asbestos-Induced DNA and RNA Methylation Changes in Bronchial Epithelial Cells.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are nanoscale tube-shaped carbon materials used in many industrial areas. Their fiber shape has caused concerns about their toxicity given their structural similarity with asbestos. The aim here was to elucidate the effect of CNTs and asbestos exposure on global DNA and RNA methylation and the methylation of genes associated with cell cycle, inflammation, and DNA damage processes in human lung cells. Human bronchial epithelial cells (16HBE14o-) were exposed for 24 h to 25 and 100 μg/mL CNTs (single-walled CNTs [SWCNTs] and multiwalled CNTs [MWCNTs]) and 2.5 μg/mL asbest…

VOC Emissions and Formation Mechanisms from Carbon Nanotube Composites during 3D Printing.

A commercially available, 3D printer nanocomposite filament of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) was analyzed with respect to its VOC emissions during simulated fused deposition modeling (FDM) and compared with a regular ABS filament. VOC emissions were quantified and characterized under a variety of conditions to simulate the thermal degradation that takes place during FDM. Increasing the residence time and temperature resulted in significant increases in VOC emissions, and the oxygen content of the reaction gas influenced the VOC profile. In agreement with oth…

Humidity- and light-driven actuators based on carbon nanotube-coated paper and polymer composite.

Multi-responsive actuators driven by different stimuli (e.g. light, humidity, electricity) have attracted intense attention recently for the advantages of being used in various environments and show enormous actuation. In this work, we propose humidity- and light-driven actuators based on carbon nanotube (CNT)-coated paper and a biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) composite. The CNT-paper/BOPP actuator shows large bending actuation when driven by humidity change (curvature of 1.2 cm-1) and near infrared (NIR) light irradiation (curvature up to 1.6 cm-1). The great actuation performances ou

Photoelectrochemical CdSe/TiO2 nanotube array microsensor for high-resolution in-situ detection of dopamine.

A photoelectrochemical wire microelectrode was constructed based on the use of a TiO2 nanotube array with electrochemically deposited CdSe semiconductor. A strongly amplified photocurrent is generated on the sensor surface. The microsensor has a response in the 0.05-20 μM dopamine (DA) concentration range and a 16.7 μM detection limit at a signal-to-noise ratio of 3. Sensitivity, recovery and reproducibility of the sensor were validated by detecting DA in spiked human urine, and satisfactory results were obtained. Graphical abstract Schematic of a sensitive photoelectrochemical microsensor bas

SnO2/TiO2 nanotube heterojunction: The first investigation of NO degradation by visible light-driven photocatalysis.

Titania (TiO2) as a commercial photocatalyst has been continually struggling due to the limitation of ultraviolet light response and the high recombination rate of photoinduced carriers. The development of heterojunction nanostructures provides great promise to achieve the activation by visible light and suppress the photoinduced electron-hole pairs recombination. Herein, we synthesized a SnO2 and TiO2 nanotube heterojunction (SnO2/TNT) via a one-step hydrothermal strategy and systematically investigated NO photocatalytic degradation over the SnO2/TNTs heterojunction under visible light at the

Chronic interfacing with the autonomic nervous system using carbon nanotube (CNT) yarn electrodes.

The ability to reliably and safely communicate chronically with small diameter (100-300 µm) autonomic nerves could have a significant impact in fundamental biomedical research and clinical applications. However, this ability has remained elusive with existing neural interface technologies. Here we show a new chronic nerve interface using highly flexible materials with axon-like dimensions. The interface was implemented with carbon nanotube (CNT) yarn electrodes to chronically record neural activity from two separate autonomic nerves: the glossopharyngeal and vagus nerves. The recorded neural s

Narrow-linewidth carbon nanotube emission in silicon hollow-core photonic crystal cavity.

Polymer-sorted semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) provide room-temperature emission at near-infrared wavelengths, with potential for large volume production of high-quality solutions and wafer-scale deposition. These features make SWNTs a very attractive material for the realization of on-chip light sources. Coupling SWNT into optical microcavities could enhance and guide their emission, while enabling spectral selection by cavity resonance engineering. This could allow the realization of bright, narrowband sources. Here, we report the first demonstration of coupling SWNTs i…

Thrombospondin-1 mediates multi-walled carbon nanotube induced impairment of arteriolar dilation.

Pulmonary exposure to multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) has been shown to disrupt endothelium-dependent arteriolar dilation in the peripheral microcirculation. The molecular mechanisms behind these arteriolar disruptions have yet to be fully elucidated. The secreted matricellular matrix protein thrombospondin-1 (TSP-1) is capable of moderating arteriolar vasodilation by inhibiting soluble guanylate cyclase activity. We hypothesized that TSP-1 may be a link between nanomaterial exposure and observed peripheral microvascular dysfunction. To test this hypothesis, wild-type C57B6J (WT) and TSP…

Co-transport of chlordecone and sulfadiazine in the presence of functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes in soils.

Batch and saturated soil column experiments were conducted to investigate sorption and mobility of two 14C-labeled contaminants, the hydrophobic chlordecone (CLD) and the sulfadiazine (SDZ), in the absence or presence of functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). The transport behaviors of CLD, SDZ, and MWCNTs were studied at environmentally relevant concentrations (0.1-10 mg L-1) and they were applied in the column studies at different times. The breakthrough curves and retention profiles were simulated using a numerical model that accounted for the advective-dispersive transport …

Encapsulation capacity and natural payload delivery of an anticancer drug from boron nitride nanotube.

The behavior of confined anticancer carboplatin (CPT) molecules in a single (10, 10) boron nitride nanotube (BNNT) was studied by means of molecular dynamics simulations. Our study revealed a very large storage capacity of BNNT. Analysis of the energy profiles depending on the number of confined molecules, and on their spatial organization allowed us to quantify the ability of BNNT to vectorize CPT. Indeed, BNNT despite its small radius presented a large inner volume that favored stable encapsulation of multiple active anticancer molecules. Moreover, in our molecular dynamics simulations, the

Effects of multiwalled carbon nanotubes on the bioavailability and toxicity of diphenhydramine to Pimephales promelas in sediment exposures.

Multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and pharmaceutical compounds are classified by the US Environmental Protection Agency as contaminants of emerging concern, with significant research devoted to determining their potential environmental and toxicological effects. Multiwalled carbon nanotubes are known to have a high adsorptive capacity for organic contaminants, leading to potential uses in water remediation; however, there is concern that co-exposure with MWCNTs may alter the bioavailability of organic compounds. Existing studies investigating MWCNT/organic contaminant co-exposures have sho…

Functional Recovery of Carbon Nanotube/Nafion Nanocomposite in Rat Model of Spinal Cord Injury.

BACKGROUND: Acute spinal cord injury (ASCI) can lead to paraplegia or quadriplegia, the treatment of which has been a major problem. New therapeutic approaches in developing carbon nanotubes (CNT) functionalized with the Nafion nanocomposite, a sulfonated tetrafluoroethylene copolymer, have been shown to increase the length of selected neurites in vitro. OBJECTIVE: We hypothesized that the administration of the CNT/Nafion nanocomposite after experimental SCI will promote regeneration of axons into the lesion cavity and the functional recovery of the hind limbs in a rat model. METHODS: To eva…

Lipid nanotube formation using space-regulated electric field above interdigitated electrodes.

Lipid nanotubes have great potential in biology and nanotechnology. Here we demonstrate a method to form lipid nanotubes using space-regulated AC electric fields above coplanar interdigitated electrodes. The AC electric field distribution can be regulated by solution height above the electrodes. The ratio of field component in x axis (Ex) to field component in z axis (Ez) increases dramatically at solution height below 50 μm; therefore, at lower solution height, the force from Ex predominantly drives lipids to form lipid nanotubes along with the electric field direction. The forces exerted on …

Modification of carbon nanotube electrodes with 1-pyrenebutanoic acid, succinimidyl ester for enhanced bioelectrocatalysis.

Conductive materials functionalized with redox enzymes provide bioelectronic architectures with application to biological fuel cells and biosensors. Effective electron transfer between the enzyme (biocatalyst) and the conductive materials is imperative for function. Various nanostructured carbon materials are common electrode choices for these applications as both the materials' inherent conductivity and physical integrity aids optimal performance. The following chapter presents a method for the use of carbon nanotube buckypaper as a conductive architecture suitable for biocatalyst functionali

High-performance photoconductive channels based on (carbon nanotube)-(CdS nanowire) hybrid nanostructures.

A photoconductive channel based on hybrid nanostructures comprising carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and CdS nanowires is fabricated by a directed assembly strategy and catalyst-assisted chemical vapor deposition (CVD). The photoconductive channels simultaneously exhibit large photocurrent and fast response speed. Furthermore, it can be easily applied to surfaces that are not flat, such as a glass tube. This is a simple but efficient strategy for various optoelectronic applications.

Impact of carbondiimide crosslinker used for magnetic carbon nanotube mediated GFP plasmid delivery.

1-Ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl) carbondiimide hydrochloride (EDC) is commonly used as a crosslinker to help bind biomolecules, such as DNA plasmids, with nanostructures. However, EDC often remains, after a crosslink reaction, in the micro-aperture of the nanostructure, e.g., carbon nanotube. The remaining EDC shows positive green fluorescent signals and makes a nanostructure with a strong cytotoxicity which induces cell death. The toxicity of EDC was confirmed on a breast cancer cell line (MCF-7) and two leukemic cell lines (THP-1 and KG-1). The MCF-7 cells mainly underwent necrosis after tr

Carbon nanotube composite peptide-based biosensors as putative diagnostic tools for rheumatoid arthritis.

This work reports on the fabrication and performance of a simple amperometric immunosensor device to be potentially used for the detection of serum anti-citrullinated peptide antibodies (ACPAs), which are specific for rheumatoid arthritis (RA) autoimmune disease. Sera of RA patients contain antibodies to different citrullinated peptides and proteins such as fibrin or filaggrin. Herein, a chimeric fibrin-filaggrin synthetic peptide (CFFCP1) was used as a recognition element anchored to the surface of a multiwalled carbon nanotube-polystyrene (MWCNT-PS) based electrochemical transducer. A photoelectrochemical immunosensor based on Au-doped TiO2 nanotube arrays for the detection of α-synuclein.

α-Synuclein (α-SYN) is a very important neuronal protein that is associated with Parkinson's disease. In this paper, we utilized Au-doped TiO(2) nanotube arrays to design a photoelectrochemical immunosensor for the detection of α-SYN. The highly ordered TiO(2) nanotubes were fabricated by using an electrochemical anodization technique on pure Ti foil. After that, a photoelectrochemical deposition method was exploited to modify the resulting nanotubes with Au nanoparticles, which have been demonstrated to facilitate the improvement of photocurrent responses. Moreover, the Au-doped TiO(2) nanotu…

Investigating photoinduced charge transfer in carbon nanotube-perylene-quantum dot hybrid nanocomposites.

In this study, we investigate photophysical and photoinduced current responses of a nanocomposite which consists of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CNTs), thiol derivative perylene compound (ETPTCDI), and cadmium selenide quantum dots (QDs). These QDs as well as the ETPTCDI harvest photons and transfer their excited electrons or holes to CNTs to complete the circuit. Both QDs and ETPTCDI contribute charges to the carbon nanotubes, which increased the overall photon harvest efficiency of the nanocomposite. Herein, we investigate through a series of photophysical photoluminescence quenching studie…
