BACKGROUND: Cryptogenic chronic active hepatitis may be an autoimmune or viral disease. Our aims were to determine the clinical features, human leukocyte antigen phenotype, and response to corticosteroid therapy of severe cryptogenic chronic active hepatitis and to compare it with these other diseases.
METHODS: Twelve patients with cryptogenic hepatitis were compared with 94 patients with autoimmune hepatitis and 30 patients with chronic viral hepatitis.

The examination of sequential karyotypes in hematologic disorders has demonstrated that karyotypic changes are often associated with concurrent changes in clinical behavior. Acquired abnormalities that recur among different patients may also suggest genomic areas important to tumor progression. The fetal response to vibroacoustic stimulation has been used in recent years as a measure of well being. Vibroacoustic stimulation theoretically may evoke both tactile and auditory responses in the fetus. In clinical practice, it is important to distinguish which type of response is actually activated. An answer may be suggested through observation of two anencephalic fetuses who demonstrated no response to such stimulation. Neuroanatomic considerations are discussed that suggest which auditory mechanisms are involved in the fetal response to vibroacoustic stimulation.

Mountain sports were the cause of 400 facial injuries treated in he Maxillo-facial Surgical Unit in Grenoble over a period of 5 years. Deltaplane injuries are becoming more frequent. Isolated facial injuries represent 57 p. cent of the cases treated. The various types of lesions encountered are described, and the distinction drawn between those treated as emergencies, and those for which urgent treatment could be delayed.

Sterile female homozygous nude mice were rendered fertile through a graft of thymic epithelium from heterozygous littermates 3 days after birth. Homozygous nude embryos were compared with embryos age (8-18 days). In nude mice, the embryological anomaly is noticeable from the 11th day of gestation and essentially consists of a failure of the ectoderm from the 3rd branchial cleft to proliferate and differentiate into a cervical vesicle. As a result, the endoderm from the 3rd pouch degenerates into cystic formations instead of differentiating.
