Phagocytosis of material from the host tissue by invading malignant cells is suspected from the presence of vacuoles containing unidentified debris. Studies performed on rats of line Wag with R-1 tumor, transplanted into the femoral region, indicated that it is possible to use a UHF field for hyperthermia therapy of malignant tumors without inflicting an injury to the normal adjacent tissues and overheating of the organism as a whole. There was found a thermal threshold being in the temperature range of 42--43 degrees, above which a more rapid tumor cell death was noted; it is most radioresistant tumor cells which are first overheated and destructed.

For 14 months 200 white noninbred male rats received N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine in various concentrations in drinking water. The animals were sacrificed in 18--22 months. With the object of examining the anti-tumour effect of exogenous interferon therapy in man a research programme has been initiated at the Karolinska Hospital. Effect of dietary indole on the urinary bladder tumorigenesis by chronic dibutylnitrosamine (DBN) treatment was evaluated in hamsters. Relaxation time(s) (T1), growth rates, and the water content of six Morris hepatomas, several murine tumors, and a selection of normal tissues indicated that malignant tumors did not always exhibit longer T1 values than any normal tissue, as previously suspected. This overlap raised the possibility of confusion between normal and malignant tissues studied by this method. Tissue T1 values depended primarily on the hydration of the tissue and correlated well with water content determinations. A rough correlation of T1 and water content with tumor growth rate was also observed.

Subcutaneous transplantation of Greene lymphoma in golden hamsters is followed by a type IV-V hyperlipoproteinemia with major hupertriglyceridemia and impairment of labelled triglyceride clearance. Postheparin lipase activity studies show that this hyperlipidemia is correlated with the decrease in the lipolytic enzyme, which plays an important role in triglyceride clearance. The objective of study was to establish an animal model with thymic lymphoma in mice induced by intraperitoneal injection of DNA alkylating agent N-methyl-N-nitrosourea (MNU).
