Meningeal malignant solitary fibrous tumor with multiple recurrence, extracranial extension, cervical lymph node metastases: case report and review of the literature.

INTRODUCTION: Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) of the central nervous system (CNS) is a spindle cell neoplasm originating from mesenchymal tissue. SFT is prone to local recurrence or distant metastasis. The main sites of metastasis include the liver, lung, and bone. However, the tumor direct extracranial extension via natural skull base foramina to cervical region is rare. CASE PRESENTATION: A 43-year-old male presented with an incidentally discovered left temporo-occipital region mass spanning the tentorium cerebelli identified during head and neck CT angiography, initially suspected as meningio

Surgical considerations in the resection of solitary fibrous tumors of the pleura.

Solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) are rare mesenchymal pleural neoplasms with an overall good prognosis and low recurrence rate if completely resected and if degree of differentiation is favorable. Within the last decade, advances in research have led to more reliable methods of differentiating SFTs from other soft tissue tumors. Historically, several markers were used to distinguish SFTs from similar tumors, but these markers had poor specificity. Recent evidence showed NAB2-STAT6 fusion gene to be a distinct feature of SFTs with 100% specificity and sensitivity. Surgical resection, with an emph

Intra-discal injection of autologous, hypoxic cultured bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells in five patients with chronic lower back pain: a long-term safety and feasibility study.

BackgroundChronic low back pain due to disc degeneration represents a major social and economic burden worldwide. The current standard of care is limited to symptomatic relief and no current approved therapy promotes disc regeneration. Bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are easily accessible and well characterized. These MSCs are multipotent and exhibit great tissue regenerative potential including bone, cartilage, and fibrous tissue regeneration. The use of this cell-based biologic for treating protruding disc herniation and/or intervertebral disc degeneration is a promising th

Complete deltoid resection in early childhood without muscle transfer results in normal shoulder function at long-term follow-up: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Musculoskeletal tumors involving the deltoid muscle and necessitating its complete resection are rare. The function after complete deltoid resection is reported to be limited, and several authors consider muscle transfer to improve shoulder motion. However, it still remains unclear whether such transfer adds function. To the best of our knowledge, all reports on complete deltoid resection refer to adult patients, and it is unknown what function results after deltoid resection in childhood. The remaining muscles may have the potential to compensate for the loss of deltoid function.

Induction of new-bone formation in the host bed by human bone-tumor transplants in athymic nude mice.

UNLABELLED: Specimens of twelve osteosarcomas, five chondrosarcomas, one giant-cell tumor, and five extraskeletal soft-tissue sarcomas were transplanted into male athymic nude (nu/nu) mice. Survival of the transplant was determined by the volume-doubling time and the sex chromatin of the tumor cells obtained from two female patients. By these criteria and the similarity of the histological composition of the original tumor and the transplant, survival occurred in four of twelve osteosarcomas and four of five chondrosarcomas. Without any local infiltration of lymphocytes or plasma cells, or oth

Solitary fibrous tumor of the pancreas: a case report.

Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is an unusual mesenchymal neoplasm that most often arises in the pleura; however, it has recently been described in a number of extrapleural sites. This report describes an extremely rare case of a benign SFT arising in the pancreas. A 41-year-old woman presented in the clinic with right upper abdominal pain. Subsequent ultrasonographic studies revealed a 1.5x1.5x1.4 cm hypoechoic mass within the pancreatic body, which was later confirmed on both helical computerized tomography and magnetic resonance imaging studies. An endocrine tumor was clinically suspected. Lap

Ultrastructural spectrum of solitary fibrous tumor: a unique perivascular tumor with alternative lines of differentiation.

Eight tumors diagnosed as solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) of the oral cavity were studied. Histologic spectrum was entirely comparable with the extrapleural SFT of other sites. One tumor had glomus tumor-like foci. Immunohistochemical results confirmed most of the previous observations, indicating characteristic expression of vimentin, CD34, bcl-2, and CD99. Factor XIIIa and alpha-smooth muscle actin were less commonly reactive and a very few cells were faintly positive for factor VIII-related antigen and Ulex europaeus agglutinin 1. All were essentially negative for S-100 protein, desmin, CD31,

Metastasizing "benign" cutaneous fibrous histiocytoma: a clinicopathologic analysis of 16 cases.

Cutaneous fibrous histiocytoma (FH) is considered a benign tumor; however, certain types of FH have been shown to have a tendency for local recurrence, and there are rare reported cases of metastasis. In this study, 16 cases of morphologically benign FH with locoregional or distant metastasis were identified in consult files. Pathologic features of primary, recurrent, and metastatic tumors, as well as clinical outcome, were evaluated. Nine were male and 7 were female patients; mean age was 42 years (range, 3 to 68 y). Primary tumors arose on the leg in 5 patients, buttock in 1, trunk in 3, sho

Clinical usefulness of determining the rate of thermal clearance within heated tumors.

Between June 1987 and June 1988, 28 patients (28 tumors) with liver, retroperitoneal, intrapelvic, or superficial tumors were treated with hyperthermia combined with radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy. Hyperthermia was administered once or twice a week for 30-60 min per session, up to a total of 2-11 sessions, with an 8-MHz RF capacitive heating device. Blood flow in the tumors was evaluated from the rate of thermal clearance (TCR) using the bio-heat transfer equation. The TCR was measured in the middle of the first heating session and at the end of the last heating session by turning off the ou

Solitary fibrous tumor of the parapharyngeal space.

Solitary fibrous tumors are rare tumors originating from the mesenchymal tissue. In most cases they arise from the subpleural tissue but have also been described in other locations in the body. Most such tumors in the head and neck region occur in the orbit. Although malignant tumors can occur, benign tumors are far more common. The therapy is surgical excision. For a conclusive diagnosis, a typical morphology and immunohistochemistry are required. The tumor is strongly positive for CD34 and vimentin. This report describes the clinical appearance and treatment of a solitary fibrous tumor of th

Solitary fibrous tumor of the oral cavity: a systematic review of the literature and a new clinicopathologic case report.

BACKGROUND: Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a rare mesenchymal neoplasm of fibroblastic differentiation, originally described in the pleura and subsequently documented at multiple extrapleural sites. Oral involvement is uncommon and may be diagnostically challenging because of its variable clinical presentation and overlapping spindle-cell morphology. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We report a palatal SFT with clinical, imaging, histopathological and immunohistochemical correlation. In parallel, a systematic review was conducted in PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science for studies published between Janua

Phosphaturic Mesenchymal Tumors: Clinicopathologic, Immunohistochemical and Molecular Analysis of 22 Cases Expanding their Morphologic and Immunophenotypic Spectrum.

Phosphaturic mesenchymal tumor (PMT) is a rare neoplasm of uncertain histogenesis that has been linked to tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO) since 1959. The neoplastic cells produce increased amount of FGF23 which results in TIO via uncontrolled renal loss of phosphate (phosphaturia), and consequently diminished bone mineralization. To date, ∼300 cases have been reported. Although there is increasing evidence that PMT can be diagnosed by reproducible histopathologic features, firm diagnosis has been often restricted to cases associated with TIO and, hence, diagnosis of "nonphosphaturic variants"

Immunoglobulin G4-related paratesticular fibrous pseudotumor and retroperitoneal fibrosis: a case report.

A 46-year-old man with a past history of retroperitoneal fibrosis was admitted with an enlarged, hard right testis. The paratesticular lesion showed heterogeneous hypoechogenicity on ultrasonography, low signal intensity on T1- and T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and lack of diffusion restriction on diffusion-weighted MRI. Following steroid treatment, the paratesticular mass was decreased in size on follow-up computed tomography. The radiologic and clinical features are recognized as a manifestation of immunoglobulin G4-related sclerosing disease involving the paratesticular regi

Primary and secondary microvascular reconstruction of the upper extremity.

Tissue defects of the upper extremity may result from trauma, tumor resection, infection, and congenital malformation. Restoration of anatomy and functional integrity may require microsurgical free flap transfer for coverage of bones, nerves, blood vessels, or tendons. Microsurgical tissue transfer also may be required prior to secondary reconstruction, such as tendon transfers or nerve or bone grafts. This article addresses indications for upper extremity reconstruction using microsurgical tissue transfer flap selection and strategies including primary and secondary reconstruction.
