Sex-biased gene expression in the frontal cortex of common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) and potential behavioral correlates.

INTRODUCTION: The common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus), a small New World monkey, has been widely used as a biological model in neuroscience to elucidate neural circuits involved in cognition and to understand brain dysfunction in neuropsychiatric disorders. In this regard, the availability of gene expression data derived from next-generation sequencing (NGS) technologies represents an opportunity for a molecular contextualization. Sexual dimorphism account for differences in diseases prevalence and prognosis. Here, we explore sex differences on frontal cortex of gene expression in common marm

Hypersexuality in Neurological Disorders: From Disinhibition to Impulsivity.

Little is known about the neurological control of human sexual behavior. Investigating and measuring this behavior by using quantitative and objective methods is difficult. Insights from lesion studies contribute to analyze the effects of neurological disorders on human sexual behavior. In this chapter, we focus on frontal lobe lesions, brain injuries, epilepsia, dementia, and Parkinson disease to describe human sexual behavior disorders, in order to highlight cortical and subcortical brain regions and neural networks involved in human sexual behavior.

Auditory evoked potential: a proposal for further evaluation in children with learning disabilities.

The information presented in this paper demonstrates the author's experience in previews cross-sectional studies conducted in Brazil, in comparison with the current literature. Over the last 10 years, auditory evoked potential (AEP) has been used in children with learning disabilities. This method is critical to analyze the quality of the processing in time and indicates the specific neural demands and circuits of the sensorial and cognitive process in this clinical population. Some studies with children with dyslexia and learning disabilities were shown here to illustrate the use of AEP in th

Genes for sexual behavior.

The mating behavior of Drosophila melanogaster is a stereotyped sequence of fixed action patterns, composed of orientation, tapping, singing, licking, attempted copulation and copulation. Mutations that block a unique aspect of mating behavior were isolated and analyzed at the cellular and molecular levels. The wild-type counterparts of the mutated genes were shown to rescue the phenotypes by their ubiquitous or targeted expression in some of the mutants. This strategy of artificial control of fly behavior opens up an avenue for studies to identify the neural center for individual behavioral a

Application of neural network and nomogram for the prediction of risk factors for bone mineral density abnormalities: A cross-sectional NHANES-based survey.

BACKGROUND: The risk of bone mineral density abnormalities is inconsistent between eastern and western regions owing to differences in ethnicity and dietary habits. A diet comprising carbohydrates and dietary fiber is not the common daily diet of the American population. Thus far, no studies have assessed the risk of bone mineral density abnormalities in the American population, and no predictive model has considered the intake of carbohydrates, dietary fiber, and coffee, as well as levels of various electrolytes for assessing bone mineral density abnormalities, especially in the elderly. This

Facilitation of biological motion processing by group-based autism specific social skills training.

Abnormalities in neurophysiological correlates of social perception are a well-known feature of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, little is known if and how ASD specific behavioral interventions may affect neural processing in ASD. The aim of the current study was to investigate for the first time, whether the group-based social skills training SOSTA-FRA would elicit changes in neurophysiological correlates of social perception in high-functioning ASD individuals aged 8-17 years. Event-related potentials (ERPs) of a facial emotion recognition (FER) and a biological motion perception tas

Feature fusion analysis approach based on synchronous EEG-fNIRS signals: application in etomidate use disorder individuals.

Etomidate is commonly used for induction of anesthesia, but prolonged use can affect brain neurovascular mechanisms, potentially leading to use disorders. However, limited research exists on the impact of etomidate on brain function, and accurately and noninvasively extracting and analyzing neurovascular brain features remains a challenge. This study introduces a novel feature fusion approach based on whole-brain synchronous Electroencephalography (EEG)-functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) signals aimed at addressing the difficulty of jointly analyzing neural and hemodynamic signals a

Esophageal reflexes modulate frontoparietal response in neonates: Novel application of concurrent NIRS and provocative esophageal manometry.

Central and peripheral neural regulation of swallowing and aerodigestive reflexes is unclear in human neonates. Functional near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is a noninvasive method to measure changes in oxyhemoglobin (HbO) and deoxyhemoglobin (HbD). Pharyngoesophageal manometry permits evaluation of aerodigestive reflexes. Modalities were combined to investigate feasibility and to test neonatal frontoparietal cortical changes during pharyngoesophageal (visceral) stimulation and/or swallowing. Ten neonates (45.6 ± 3.0 wk postmenstrual age, 4.1 ± 0.5 kg) underwent novel pharyngoesophageal manome

Preictal dysfunctions of inhibitory interneurons paradoxically lead to their rebound hyperactivity and to low-voltage-fast onset seizures in Dravet syndrome.

Epilepsies have numerous specific mechanisms. The understanding of neural dynamics leading to seizures is important for disclosing pathological mechanisms and developing therapeutic approaches. We investigated electrographic activities and neural dynamics leading to convulsive seizures in patients and mouse models of Dravet syndrome (DS), a developmental and epileptic encephalopathy in which hypoexcitability of GABAergic neurons is considered to be the main dysfunction. We analyzed EEGs from DS patients carrying a SCN1A pathogenic variant, as well as epidural electrocorticograms, hippocampal l

Neural mechanisms of acupuncture for peripheral facial nerve palsy: A protocol for systematic review and meta analysis.

BACKGROUND: Peripheral facial nerve palsy (PFNP) is a cranial neuropathy that occurs when the seventh facial nerve is damaged. PFNP seriously affects patients' quality of life, and approximately 30% of patients suffer from sequelae, such as unrecovered palsy, synkinesis, facial muscle contracture, and facial spasm. Many studies have confirmed the effectiveness of acupuncture for the treatment of PFNP. However, the specific mechanism remains unclear and needs to be further explored. Therefore, the purpose of this systematic review is to investigate the neural mechanisms underlying acupuncture t

Predicting nodal metastases in squamous cell carcinoma of the oral tongue using artificial intelligence.

OBJECTIVE: The presence of occult nodal metastases in patients with squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the oral tongue has implications for treatment. Upwards of 30% of patients will have occult nodal metastases, yet a significant number of patients undergo unnecessary neck dissection to confirm nodal status. This study sought to predict the presence of nodal metastases in patients with SCC of the oral tongue using a convolutional neural network (CNN) that analyzed visual histopathology from the primary tumor alone. METHODS: Cases of SCC of the oral tongue were identified from the records of a

Activity Recognition From Newborn Resuscitation Videos.

OBJECTIVE: Birth asphyxia is one of the leading causes of neonatal deaths. A key for survival is performing immediate and continuous quality newborn resuscitation. A dataset of recorded signals during newborn resuscitation, including videos, has been collected in Haydom, Tanzania, and the aim is to analyze the treatment and its effect on the newborn outcome. An important step is to generate timelines of relevant resuscitation activities, including ventilation, stimulation, suction, etc., during the resuscitation episodes. METHODS: We propose a two-step deep neural network system, ORAA-net, ut

Micro-probing enables fine-grained mapping of neuronal populations using fMRI.

The characterization of receptive field (RF) properties is fundamental to understanding the neural basis of sensory and cognitive behaviour. The combination of non-invasive imaging, such as fMRI, with biologically inspired neural modelling has enabled the estimation of population RFs directly in humans. However, current approaches require making numerous a priori assumptions, so these cannot reveal unpredicted properties, such as fragmented RFs or subpopulations. This is a critical limitation in studies on adaptation, pathology or reorganization. Here, we introduce micro-probing (MP), a techni

Neuronal properties, in vivo effects, and pathology of a Huntington's disease patient-derived induced pluripotent stem cells.

Induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) generated from somatic cells of patients can be used to model different human diseases. They may also serve as sources of transplantable cells that can be used in novel cell therapies. Here, we analyzed neuronal properties of an iPSC line derived from a patient with a juvenile form of Huntington's disease (HD) carrying 72 CAG repeats (HD-iPSC). Although its initial neural inducing activity was lower than that of human embryonic stem cells, we found that HD-iPSC can give rise to GABAergic striatal neurons, the neuronal cell type that is most susceptible to

Validating γ oscillations and delayed auditory responses as translational biomarkers of autism.

BACKGROUND: Difficulty modeling complex behavioral phenotypes in rodents (e.g., language) has hindered pathophysiological investigation and treatment development for autism spectrum disorders. Recent human neuroimaging studies, however, have identified functional biomarkers that can be more directly related to the abnormal neural dynamics of autism spectrum disorders. This study assessed the translational potential of auditory evoked-response endophenotypes of autism in parallel mouse and human studies of autism. METHODS: Whole-cortex magnetoencephalography was recorded in 17 typically develo

Self-domestication in Homo sapiens: Insights from comparative genomics.

This study identifies and analyzes statistically significant overlaps between selective sweep screens in anatomically modern humans and several domesticated species. The results obtained suggest that (paleo-)genomic data can be exploited to complement the fossil record and support the idea of self-domestication in Homo sapiens, a process that likely intensified as our species populated its niche. Our analysis lends support to attempts to capture the "domestication syndrome" in terms of alterations to certain signaling pathways and cell lineages, such as the neural crest.
