The pain conducting systems in the thorax will be described. The diagnosis angina pectoris is a symptom diagnosis. The common medical assumption is that these symptoms are caused by decreased circulation in the coronary vessels. The truth is that exactly the same symptoms can be the results of pathological changes in for example the oesophagus, the mediastinum and the thoracic spine. Our knowledge of referred pain and the pathways for pain conduction permits us nowadays to understand how pain symptoms can have different origins and still be experienced as identical.

We have studied the influence of intravenously administered diazepam on the horizontal (HVOR) and vertical (VVOR) vestibulo-ocular reflexes of the rabbit. The HVOR and VVOR were evoked by sinusoidal oscillation of rabbits on a rate table (0.01 to 0.8 Hz, +/- 10 degrees), and eye movements were measured with an infrared light-projection technique. The gains of the HVOR and VVOR (evoked eye velocity/head velocity) were reduced by diazepam injections of 5 microgram/kg. The dose required to produce a 50% reduction in HVOR gain was 500 microgram/kg. The time required to reduce the HVOR gain to 50%

The projection of the vermis of the anterior and posterior lobes of the cerebellum to the fastigial nucleus was studied. It was attempted to obtain lesions restricted to the lobules and this was achieved for the posterior lobe only. The extent of lesions and of additional encroachments were determined by mapping degenerated descending cortical fibers in serial sections. Evidence was obtained that the projection of the vermis is restricted to the fastigial nucleus, without a contribution to the interposed nuclei, in the posterior lobe. Indirect evidence supports the existence of a similar arran

The orginization of cerebellar corticovestibular fibers was studied in a prosimian primate (Galago senegalensis) using the Fink and Heimer ('67) method. The vestibular complex of Galago is larger than in other mammals and some higher primates. Vermis lobule IX contributes the largest number of fibers to the ipsilateral vestibular complex. Lobules VI and VIII give rise to lesser, but similar, numbers of fibers which also pass into the ipsilateral vestibular nuclei. Vermis lobule VII and the paravermal and lateral cortices contribute extremely sparse numbers of fibers to the dorsal area of the i

The Vertical Occipital Fasciculus (VOF) is a vertically oriented white matter tract that connects dorsal and ventral visual cortices and plays a key role in visual integration. First described by Wernicke in 1881 in monkeys, the VOF remained largely overlooked for nearly a century before its re-emergence in modern neuroanatomical literature with the advent of diffusion MRI and advanced tractography techniques. Since then, a growing body of research has examined its anatomical characteristics, methodological challenges in its delineation, functional significance, and evolutionary conservation a

After a monocular injection of the cholera toxin B subunit (CTB) into the vitreous chamber of one eye, the retrogradely labeled retinopetal neurons were studied in the diencephalon of the Japanese monkey. The retrogradely transported tracer was visualized using the peroxidase antibody technique and an anti-cholera toxin antibody. The CTB-labeled nerve cell bodies were scattered in the periventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus, lateral hypothalamic area, and midline nuclei of the thalamus on both sides. In addition, a few retrogradely labeled nerve somata were observed in the most rostral por

The symptoms and signs which constitute the carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) result from entrapment or compression of the median nerve within the carpal tunnel. Electrodiagnostic studies may objectively document the presence of median neuropathy within the carpal tunnel and help distinguish CTS from other disorders such as cervical radiculopathy, neurogenic thoracic outlet syndrome, proximal median nerve compression syndromes, and polyneuropathy which may either mimic or occasionally coexist with CTS. Recording median nerve responses with wrist and palm stimulation allows determination of the wris

In spite of repeated demonstrations by degeneration technics, nigrothalamic fibers have been regarded with some skepticism. Attempts were made to trace nigral efferent projections in the monkey by autoradiographic technics. Tritiated amino acids (L-leucine, L-lysine and L-proline), injected into portions of the substantia nigra (SN), labeled cells in four regions, designated as, (1) rostrolateral, (2) caudolateral, (3) rostromedial and (4) central. Rostrolateral nigral neurons transported radioactive label preferentially and abundantly to thalamic nuclei; localized isotope was found in parts o

1. The responses of Purkinje cells and presumed mossy fibers to natural stimulation of the horizontal semicircular canals were recorded in the nodulus and uvula of rabbit vestibulocerebellum. Units responding to vestibular stimulation were also studied with visual stimulation. 2. The responses of presumed mossy fibers were of the Type I and Type II varieties and were characterized by a low threshold for angular acceleration and high sensitivity. 3. Purkinje cell responses were divided into two groups: The first group showed only modulation of simple spike activity during rotation. According to

Neural crest cells are pluripotent cells that emerge from the neural epithelium, migrate extensively, and differentiate into numerous derivatives, including neurons, glial cells, pigment cells and connective tissue. Major questions concerning their morphogenesis include: 1) what establishes the pathways of migration and 2) what controls the final destination and differentiation of various neural crest subpopulations. These questions will be addressed in this review. Neural crest cells from the trunk level have been explored most extensively. Studies show that melanoblasts are specified shortly

OBJECTIVES: Previous studies with adults suggest that aberrant communication between neural networks underpins functional neurological disorder (FND). The current study adopts a data-driven approach to investigate the extent that functional resting-state networks are disrupted in a pediatric mixed-FND cohort.
METHODS: 31 children with mixed FND and 33 age- and sex-matched healthy controls completed resting-state fMRI scans. Whole-brain independent component analysis (pFWE < 0.05) was then used to identify group differences in resting-state connectivity. Self-report measures included the Depre

The pathophysiology of the tics that define Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (TS) is not well understood. Local disinhibition within the striatum has been hypothesized to play a pathogenic role. In support of this, experimental disinhibition by local antagonism of GABA-A receptors within the striatum produces tic-like phenomenology in monkey and rat. We replicated this effect in mice via local picrotoxin infusion into the dorsal striatum. Infusion of picrotoxin into sensorimotor cortex produced similar movements, accompanied by signs of behavioral activation; higher-dose picrotoxin in the cortex

Withdrawal reflexes are the simplest centrally organized responses to painful stimuli, making them popular models for the study of nociception. Until recently, it was believed that withdrawal was a single reflex response involving excitation of all flexor muscles in a limb with concomitant inhibition of extensors. However, recent findings suggest that withdrawal reflexes are tailored to produce the most appropriate movement according the site at which the stimulus is applied, which could require extensors to act as the primary movers. This idea is supported by new evidence obtained from the di

1. The gastric central pattern generator (CPG), located in the stomatogastric ganglion (STG) of the spiny lobster (Panulirus interruptus), is nonrhythmic when deprived of neuromodulatory inputs from anterior ganglia. Leaving these inputs intact in vitro can sustain a gastric rhythm but also introduces numerous, uncontrolled and largely unknown modulatory and synaptic influences that greatly complicate analysis of this CPG. 2. Here we induced gastric rhythms in the isolated STG, by superfusing a specific modulator, the muscarinic agonist, pilocarpine. Muscarinic agents sustain vigorous gastric

Forty patients with beta-thalassemia major (BTM), between 11 and 19 years of age and maintained on long-term desferrioxamine (DFO) treatment, were examined by evoked potential and nerve conduction velocity studies to investigate a possible involvement of the auditory, visual, somatosensory, or peripheral nervous pathways. Pathologic findings in brainstem auditory-, visual-, and somatosensory-evoked potentials, and nerve conduction velocity studies were demonstrated in 25%, 15%, 7.5%, and 25% of the patients, respectively, whereas 15% demonstrated involvement of multiple neural pathways. Chronic stress is associated with persistent alterations in neural circuit function, yet how these changes are expressed across multiple descriptive levels remains unclear. Here, we re-analyzed in vivo GCaMP8s recordings from BLA-DMS and CeA-DMS projection pathways using complementary distributional, dynamical, and computational approaches. Distributional analyses based on Kullback-Leibler (KL) divergence revealed stress-associated changes in the temporal organization of neural activity patterns, particularly following acute aversive perturbations where stressed animals exhibited prolonged dev

Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rsfMRI) is a novel approach that has the potential to examine abnormalities in the default mode network (DMN) component. Two different approaches were used in the present study to characterize the functional connectivities of various DMN components in 16 non-medicated ADHD and a similar number of TD (typically developing) children. rsfMRI data were analysed using independent component analysis (ICA) and region-of-interest (ROI) seed to voxel correlation analysis. ICA results indicated a strong coherence of the left dorsal anterior cingular c

This article reviews the four ways by which large-scale, neurobiologically realistic modeling can be used in conjunction with functional neuroimaging data, especially that obtained by functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and positron emission tomography (PET), to help investigators understand the neural bases for sensorimotor and cognitive functions. The conceptually distinct purposes served are:(1) formulating and implementing specific hypotheses about how neuronal populations mediate a task, which will be illustrated using models of visual and auditory object processing; (2) determin

The amygdaloid complex has long been implicated in seizure disorders. Yet, projection cells of the lateral amygdaloid nucleus (LA) display little spontaneous activity suggesting that this seizure prone structure is normally controlled by strong inhibitory mechanisms. This control is achieved in part by local interneurons; however, a synaptically activated, Ca(2+)-dependent K(+) (K(Ca)) conductance has recently been identified as a second major inhibitory mechanism. In the present study, we investigated which K(Ca) channels underlie this conductance, and their roles in the generation of the syn
