Neurophysiological and psychological disorders and occupational exposure to organic solvents.

A number of reports, particularly from Scandinavian countries, claim that painters and workers in other trades in which prolonged occupational exposure to organic solvents may occur develop a type of mental illness characterized principally by impairment of memory and co-ordination and some deterioration of personality. The condition, called 'organic solvent disease', is recognized as a cause of premature retirement and is classed as an occupational disease in certain countries. The conclusions of these reports have been contested and the existence of such a disease entity has been questioned.

[Prognosis of severe craniocerebral trauma using neurophysiologic parameters].

40 patients in acute posttraumatic coma were assessed with help of 3 electrophysiological methods: short latency somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs), brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) and EEG, the results of which were compared with clinical outcome 3 months after the head injury (Fisher's exact probability test). SEPs proved to be the most reliable method for prognostic evaluation of these patients (p less than 0.001), followed by the EEG (p less than 0.002), the prognostic relevance of which, however, is limited by the use of narcotic drugs (barbiturates). BAEPs are less useful

The Neurophysiology of Cybersickness: A Systematic Review of Neuromarkers, Neurostimulation, and Reporting Practices in Virtual Reality.

Visually induced motion sickness (VIMS) is a prevalent adverse response to virtual reality (VR) exposure, and its assessment has relied primarily on retrospective subjective questionnaires that cannot support continuous monitoring or real-time detection. This PRISMA-guided systematic review synthesizes 92 studies on the neurophysiology of VIMS in VR, retrieved from PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus through March 2025, spanning electroencephalography, functional near-infrared spectroscopy, and non-invasive neurostimulation. The EEG literature converges on increased low-frequency (delta and the…

Altered EEG in Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease: Improving Diagnostic Accuracy Using American Clinical Neurophysiology Society 2021 Criteria.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) is a rapidly progressive neurodegenerative disease characterized by significant changes in EEG and structural alterations on MRI. Both are integrated in the current World Health Organization (WHO) surveillance criteria of CJD. We aimed to re-evaluate the EEG recordings, along with clinical and MRI data, in patients with different subtypes of definite CJD by applying the adapted American Clinical Neurophysiology Society (ACNS) criteria, 2021. METHODS: Fifty-one routine EEG recordings in 16 patients with sporadic CJD were reanalyzed. R…

Neuroimaging meets neurophysiology: vascular endothelial growth factor and regional cerebral blood flow in early Alzheimer's disease.

Angiogenesis may play an important role in the pathophysiology of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Previous in vitro and in vivo studies suggest a … ere angiogenesis was associated with cerebral blood flow (CBF) changes. Using both neuroimaging and neurophysiology measures, this study showed the association between CBF and blood vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in people with early AD, suggesting further investigation into angiogenesis and CBF as potential therapeutic targets for AD.

Healthcare impact of electroencephalography performed during clinical neurophysiology on-call duty in a third-level hospital.

INTRODUCTION: The electroencephalogram (EEG) is a useful tool in the diagnosis of pathologies such as non-convulsive status epilepticus (NCSE) or brain death (BD), cardiac arrest (CA), and status epilepticus (SE) treatment monitoring. In addition, it provides irreplaceable information depending on the time it is performed, as is the case with the diagnosis of epilepsy after a first epileptic seizure (ES) or to differentiate these from non-epileptic paroxysmal events (NEPE). Its usefulness is maintained outside the usual working day, but it is not available in many centers. SUBJECTS AND METHOD

A New Surgical Paradigm for Postnatal Repair of Open Neural Tube Defects Using Intraoperative Neurophysiology Monitoring.

An open neural tube defect (ONTD) features an exposed, unclosed neural plate in the form of an expanded and frequently hefty neural placode. Traditional philosophy of ONTD repair aims at preserving the placode at any cost, which often means stuffing the entire thick and unwieldy but non-functional tissue into a tight dural sac, increasing the likelihood of future tethering of the spinal cord. The same philosophy of attempting to save the whole perimetry of the placode also sometimes leads to inadvertent inclusion of parts of the squamous epithelial membrane surrounding the placode into the rec

Clinical neurophysiology in the diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: the Lambert and the El Escorial criteria.

For many years, the only published criteria for the electrodiagnostic (EDX) recognition of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) were those formulated by Lambert (1957; 1969). In 1990, different EDX guidelines were incorporated in the all-inclusive diagnostic criteria formulated by a subcommittee on ALS of the World Federation of Neurology, which met in El Escorial, Spain. Unfortunately, particularly in regard to the EDX requirements, the 'El Escorial criteria' have several flaws which compromise their usefulness. These include: (1) they ignore the fact that whenever upper and lower motor neuron

Maximizing the translational potential of neurophysiology in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: a study on compound muscle action potentials.

Mouse models of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) enable testing of novel therapeutic interventions. However, treatments that have extended survival in mice have often failed to translate into human benefit in clinical trials. Compound muscle action potentials (CMAPs) are a simple neurophysiological test that measures the summation of muscle fiber depolarization in response to maximal stimulation of the innervating nerve. CMAPs can be measured in both mice and humans and decline with motor axon loss in ALS, making them a potential translational read-out of disease progression. We assessed th

Investigating the links between parent-child interactions and context-specific electroencephalography asymmetry: Neurophysiology behind a frustrating task.

This study investigated the relations between parent-child interactions and infant brain activity in the context of a frustration eliciting task. Specifically, electroencephalography (EEG) data were recorded and processed to provide alpha frontal asymmetry indicators linked with approach/avoidance emotions and motivation. These data were collected from 53 mother-infant dyads during baseline and a toy retraction task, with play interactions coded for caregiving quality indicators. Hierarchical multiple linear regression analyses indicated that infants of more sensitive/responsive mothers and th

The Neurophysiology of Caffeine as a Central Nervous System Stimulant and the Resultant Effects on Cognitive Function.

Caffeine is one of the world's most consumed drugs. According to the Washington Post (2015), two billion cups of coffee are consumed per day worldwide. Caffeine is classified as a central nervous system (CNS) stimulant and an organic molecule called methylxanthine. Caffeine has three notable mechanisms of action on the CNS that produce a psychostimulant effect. These effects are responsible for the effect that caffeine has on cognitive function. The effects of caffeine consumption on cognitive function have been demonstrated across several studies involving humans and animals. With the immense

The respiratory control mechanisms in the brainstem and spinal cord: integrative views of the neuroanatomy and neurophysiology.

Respiratory activities are produced by medullary respiratory rhythm generators and are modulated from various sites in the lower brainstem, and which are then output as motor activities through premotor efferent networks in the brainstem and spinal cord. Over the past few decades, new knowledge has been accumulated on the anatomical and physiological mechanisms underlying the generation and regulation of respiratory rhythm. In this review, we focus on the recent findings and attempt to elucidate the anatomical and functional mechanisms underlying respiratory control in the lower brainstem and

Striatal disorders dissociate mechanisms of enhanced and impaired response selection - Evidence from cognitive neurophysiology and computational modelling.

Paradoxically enhanced cognitive processes in neurological disorders provide vital clues to understanding neural function. However, what determines whether the neurological damage is impairing or enhancing is unclear. Here we use the performance of patients with two disorders of the striatum to dissociate mechanisms underlying cognitive enhancement and impairment resulting from damage to the same system. In a two-choice decision task, Huntington's disease patients were faster and less error prone than controls, yet a patient with the rare condition of benign hereditary chorea (BHC) was both sl
