Thermal stratification-mediated DOM transformation shapes the vertical coupling-to-decoupling of carbon and nitrogen in an oxic alpine reservoir.

Owing to depth and distinctive geography, alpine reservoirs develop persistent seasonal thermal stratification that reshapes habitats and shapes carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) cycling, yet the fine-scale vertical mechanisms of C-N coupling remain unresolved. Combining FT-ICR MS, dual N-O isotopes, and multi-omic microbial analyses, we resolved biogeochemical dynamics across a full stratification cycle, targeting its stable phase to decipher C-N coupling and decoupling. In the epilimnion, intense radiation and full oxygenation sustained active dissolved organic matter (DOM) transformation; its hig

Spatiotemporal Decoupling of Carbon and Energy Flux Enables Efficient Biomanufacturing of Aviation Fuel Precursors from CO2.

Sustainable biomanufacturing of high-value, structurally complex chemicals directly from CO2 represents a frontier for carbon neutrality yet remains fundamentally constrained by a trade-off intrinsic to photobiohybrid systems: catabolic oxidation of fixed carbon must be invoked to regenerate intracellular reducing power, creating a futile cycle that reoxidizes photosynthetically fixed carbon back to CO2 and erodes the overall carbon atom economy. Overcoming this bottleneck requires a unified platform capable of simultaneously supplying carbon substrates and regenerating reducing equivalents to

GSNOR mediates NO signaling to enhance salt tolerance in tobacco by regulating redox and photosynthesis.

High salt stress can hinder plant growth and development, thus reducing crop yield and quality. As an important signaling molecule, NO is involved in regulating various physiological and biochemical processes in plants. In this study, tobacco seedlings treated with 200 mmol/L NaCl exhibited leaf etiolation, sharp increases in superoxide anion (O2−) and peroxynitrite anion (ONOO−) contents, reduced activities of photosystem I (PSI) and II (PSII) reaction centers, and obstructed electron transfer. However, overexpression of the gene encoding the NO regulator nitrosoglutathione reductase (GSNOR)

Interactive mechanism of elevated pCO2 and nutrient on 2-methylisoborneol production in cyanobacteria.

Cyanobacterial blooms, exacerbated by climate change and eutrophication, increasingly compromise water quality by producing taste and odor (T&O) compounds including 2-methylisoborneol (MIB). Cyanobacteria synthesize MIB by redirecting carbon metabolism intermediates into the methylerythritol phosphate pathway. This process appears to be influenced by rising atmospheric CO2 partial pressure (pCO2). This study examines how elevated pCO2 affects MIB production in Synechococcus sp. FACHB-1061 under varying nutrient conditions. The results indicate that elevated pCO2 boosts cyanobacterial biomass a

Influence of infrared light illumination on biogas production and microbial communities in anaerobic digestion of primary sludge and fruit and vegetable waste.

Anaerobic digestion (AD) is a widely adopted technology for treating various waste streams, offering environmental benefits and carbon-neutral energy production in wastewater treatment plants. While most previous studies have focused on optimizing methane production under dark conditions, the impact of infrared (IR) light on AD performance remains largely underexplored. This study investigates the effect of IR light on the AD of primary sludge (PS) and fruit and vegetable waste (FVW). IR illumination substantially improved reduction of total chemical oxygen demand and volatile solids in PS mon

Electrosynthesis of NH3 from low-concentration NO on cascade dual-site catalysts in neutral media.

Electrosynthesis of NH3 from low-concentration NO (NORR) in neutral media offers a sustainable nitrogen fixation strategy but is hindered by weak NO adsorption, slow water dissociation, and sluggish hydrogenation kinetics. Herein, we propose an intriguing strategy that successfully overcomes these limitations through using an electron-donating motif to modulate NO-affinitive catalysts, thereby creating dual active site with synergistic functionality. Specifically, we integrate electron-donating nanoparticles into a Fe single-atom catalyst (FeSAC), where Fe sites ensure strong NO adsorption, wh…

Kinetics and theoretical investigations on CO2 conversion and iodine vapor adsorption by polyethyleneimine-functionalized ionic polymers.

Developing efficient ionic polymers for catalysis and adsorption, such as the fixation of CO2 into high-value-added chemicals and iodine adsorption, represents a promising yet challenging avenue of research. In this study, a series of ionic organic polymers, designated as CPEIs (CPEI-1, CPEI-2, CPEI-3, CPEI-4, and CPEI-5) were assembled from the Zincke reaction involving branched polyethyleneimine and Zincke salt. These polymers were thoroughly characterized, and subsequently implemented to CO2 immobilization reactions, iodine vapor, and methyl iodide adsorption. Owing to their abundant nitrog

Non-Ototoxic Local Delivery of Bisphosphonate to the Mammalian Cochlea.

HYPOTHESIS: Local delivery of bisphosphonates results in superior localization of these compounds for the treatment of cochlear otosclerosis, without ototoxicity. BACKGROUND: Otosclerosis is a common disorder of abnormal bone remodeling within the human otic capsule. It is a frequent cause of conductive hearing loss from stapes fixation. Large lesions that penetrate the cochlear endosteum and injure the spiral ligament result in sensorineural hearing loss. Nitrogen-containing bisphosphonates (e.g., zoledronate) are potent inhibitors of bone remodeling with proven efficacy in the treatment of
