The effects of chemical preservation on bulk isotope ratios in Atlantic bluefin tuna and Atlantic bonito muscle tissue.

Biological samples collected during oceanographic research are often chemically preserved to maintain tissue integrity prior to analysis. However, chemical preservation can produce changes in isotopic signatures and elemental compositions of the preserved samples. These changes typically adhere to predictable ranges, but effects vary by species. The impacts of two commonly used chemical preservatives, formalin and ethanol, were tested on tissue samples from Atlantic bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus) and Atlantic bonito (Sarda sarda). Tissue samples underwent bulk isotope signature and elemental a

Effects of selected pharmaceuticals on riverine biofilm communities.

Although pharmaceutical and therapeutic products are widely found in the natural environment, there is limited understanding of their ecological effects. Here we used rotating annular bioreactors to assess the impact of 10 microg.L(-1) of the selected pharmaceuticals ibuprofen, carbamazepine, furosemide, and caffeine on riverine biofilms. After 8 weeks of development, community structure was assessed using in situ microscopic analyses, fluor-conjugated lectin binding, standard plate counts, fluorescent in situ hybridization, carbon utilization spectra, and stable carbon isotope analyses. Extremely elevated methyl mercury levels in water, sediment and organisms in a Romanian reservoir affected by release of mercury from a chlor-alkali plant.

We examined mercury (Hg) biogeochemistry and biomagnification in the Babeni Reservoir, a system strongly affected by the release of Hg from a chlor-alkali plant. Total mercury (THg) concentrations in river water reached 88 ng L(-1) but decreased rapidly in the reservoir (to 9 ng L(-1)). In contrast, monomethylmercury (MMHg) concentrations increased from the upstream part of the reservoir to the central part (0.7 ng L(-1)), suggesting high methylation within the reservoir. Moreover, vertical water column profiles of THg and MMHg indicated that Hg methylation mainly occurred deep in the water co

Nutrition and health at contact in late prehistoric central Gulf Coast Florida.

This paper presents an analysis of human remains from Tatham Mound, a dual-component mortuary site from central Gulf Coast Florida. The human remains from Tatham are significant because they come from a limited time period during the initial contact with Europeans at AD 1525-1550. Dietary reconstruction demonstrates that at the time of European contact, maize was not a predominant dietary item. Low frequencies for several dental and skeletal pathological indicators are consistent with relatively good health as compared to other Southeastern late prehistoric and protohistoric populations. Flood-pulse and trophic position modulate mercury concentrations in fishes from an Amazon floodplain lake.

Mercury (Hg) bioaccumulation can be influenced by biological characteristics (e.g., trophic position) and environmental changes (e.g., seasonal flood-pulse), as it can create site conditions conducive to methylation and alter the availability of food to biota. This study aimed to relate total mercury (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations in fishes of an Amazonian lake (Catalão Lake) to their dietary changes during different hydrological seasons (rising-, high-, falling-, and low-water). Levels of THg, MeHg, and stable isotopes of nitrogen and carbon (δ15N and δ13C) were determined in t

Temporal increase in organic mercury in an endangered pelagic seabird assessed by century-old museum specimens.

Methylmercury cycling in the Pacific Ocean has garnered significant attention in recent years, especially with regard to rising mercury emissions from Asia. Uncertainty exists concerning whether increases in anthropogenic emissions over time may have caused increased mercury bioaccumulation in the biota. To address this, we measured total mercury and, for a subset of samples, methylmercury (the bioaccumulated form of mercury) in museum feathers from an endangered seabird, the black-footed albatross (Phoebastria nigripes), spanning a 120-y period. We analyzed stable isotopes of nitrogen (δ(15)N

Living in a challenging environment: Monitoring stress ecology by non-destructive methods in an Antarctic seabird.

How Antarctic species are facing historical and new stressors remains under-surveyed and risks to wildlife are still largely unknown. Adélie penguins Pygoscelis adeliae are well-known bioindicators and sentinels of Antarctic ecosystem changes, a true canary in the coal mine. Immuno-haematological parameters have been proved to detect stress in wild animals, given their rapid physiological response that allows them tracking environmental changes and thus inferring habitat quality. Here, we investigated variation in Erythrocyte Nuclear Abnormalities (ENAs) and White Blood Cells (WBCs) in penguin

Mercury Concentrations in Big Brown Bats (Eptesicus fuscus) of the Finger Lakes Region, New York.

The northeastern United States receives elevated mercury (Hg) deposition from United States and global emissions, making it critical to understand the fate of Hg in watersheds with a variety of aquatic habitats and land use types, such as the Finger Lakes region of New York State. Bats are valuable and important organisms to study chronic Hg exposure, because they are at risk of sublethal effects from elevated Hg exposure. The objectives of this study were to: (1) determine total Hg (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations in big brown bats (Eptesicus fuscus) of the Finger Lakes region; (

Factors determining nutrient distribution in sediments and porewater in a semi-confined coastal environment subject to anthropogenic pressure.

Increasing inputs of nutrients and organic matter from urban areas accumulate in coastal sediments, which act as a storage compartment that can trigger eutrophication events, and promote organism mortality. The aim of this research was to evaluate the factors that determine the distribution of nutrients in sediments and porewater from a coastal environment. Jurujuba cove receives nutrients and organic matter inputs from diffuse sources (mainly domestic sewage) and from intensive mussel farming. Fifteen sediment samples were collected. pH and Eh were measured in situ. Sediments were centrifuged

Threonine incorporation in tissues of growing broiler chickens using L-[15 N] threonine.

Most amino acid requirement trials appear for whole-body responses, but there is little information concerning amino acid incorporation in individual tissues, which may vary according to the age. L-[15 N] threonine was used to evaluate its incorporation rate and distribution among broiler tissues in different ages. Seventy-two male broiler chickens were distributed into three different phases: starter (4 to 9 days old), grower (18 to 23 days old) and finisher phase (32 to 37 days old). L-[15 N] threonine was added on balanced diets, and birds were fed for five days in each phase. Enriched samp

Role of hydrogen bonding in the photophysical properties of isomeric tetrapyridylporphyrins in aprotic solvent.

Extensive photophysical properties of isomeric tetra-2-pyridylporphyrin (TpyP(2)), tetra-3-pyridylporphyrin (TpyP(3)), and tetra-4-pyridylporphyrin (TpyP(4)) have been studied in the presence of a series of phenols of increasing hydrogen bonding power in dichloromethane solution by employing UV/vis spectroscopy; steady-state, time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy; and transient absorption spectroscopic techniques. The change of absorption spectra of all three porphyrins as a function of different phenol concentrations established the preference of hydrogen bonded complex formation to the per

Reactions of nitrogen oxides with the five-coordinate Fe(III)(porphyrin) nitrito intermediate Fe(Por)(ONO) in sublimed solids.

Detailed experimental studies are described for reactions of several nitrogen oxides with iron porphyrin models for heme/NxOy systems. It is shown by FTIR and optical spectroscopy and by isotope labeling experiments that reaction of small increments of NO2 with sublimed thin layers of the iron(II) complex Fe(Por) (Por = meso-tetraphenylporphyrinato dianion, TPP, or meso-tetra-p-tolylporphyrinato dianion, TTP) leads to formation of the 5-coordinate nitrito complexes Fe(Por)(eta1-ONO) (1), which are fairly stable but very slowly decompose under vacuum giving mostly the corresponding nitrosyl com

Protein and amino acid metabolism in cancer cachexia: investigative techniques and therapeutic interventions.

Cancer cachexia is a complex syndrome characterized primarily by diminished nutrient intake and progressive tissue depletion that is manifest clinically as anorexia and host weight loss. The gradual loss of host protein stores is central to this process. This review outlines the techniques that have been used to evaluate human amino acid metabolism, their application in patients with cancer cachexia, and possible therapeutic interventions designed to overcome alterations in host protein and amino acid metabolism associated with malignant cachexia. The techniques of nitrogen balance and 3-methy

Tricationic Xanthylium-Catalyzed Oxyamination of Activated Alkenes Using O-Benzoylhydroxylamines As Bifunctional Reagents.

1,2-Amino alcohols are essential scaffolds in organic synthesis and pharmaceutical development, yet the direct catalytic synthesis of secondary alkylamino alcohol derivatives from alkene precursors remains a significant challenge. Although O-benzoylhydroxylamines are effective aminating reagents, the direct use of primary alkyl amino groups (RNH-X) in amination is still rare. Moreover, existing methods often suffer from poor atom economy due to the generation of stoichiometric byproducts. Herein, we report a tricationic xanthylium-based organophotoredox catalyst that enables primary O-benzoylh

Chronic Alcohol Consumption Reprograms Hepatic Metabolism Through Organelle-Specific Acetylation in Mice.

Posttranslational acetylation of proteins by acetyl-CoA is a crucial regulator of proteostasis and substrate metabolism. Ethanol metabolism in the liver induces protein accumulation, acetylation, and metabolic disruption. Although acetylation impacts enzyme activity and stability, its role in ethanol-related protein accumulation and metabolic dysfunction remains unclear. Using stable isotope-based proteomics, acetylomics, and metabolic profiling in a mouse model of chronic ethanol-induced liver injury, we demonstrate that ethanol induces hepatic steatosis, inflammation, oxidative stress, and p

Solar-Driven C-N Coupling over Pd/TiO2 Enables High-Yield Synthesis of Methylamine Hydrochlorides from Methanol and Ammonium Chloride.

Methylamine hydrochlorides (MACls) are important building blocks in organic synthesis, yet their conventional production requires energy-intensive, multistep processes. Herein, we report a photocatalytic strategy for the direct synthesis of MACls from methanol and ammonium chloride under mild conditions. A high MACls yield of 29.62 mmol·g-1 is achieved within 4 h over Pd-decorated TiO2 with oxygen vacancies, outperforming most previously reported photocatalytic C-N coupling systems. In situ spectroscopy, isotope effects, and theoretical studies reveal that methanol is initially oxidized to for

The macromolecules and lipid biomarkers as seen in the archean white mfolozi banded iron formation (BIF): Their biogenicity and possible implications for mars.

The Archean Banded Iron Formation (BIF), in general, is recognized as a significant paleoredox indicator, particularly due to its significant link to the Great Oxidation Event; however, its biogenicity remain inadequately defined. In this study, we employ a comprehensive approach including mineralogy, fluorescence spectroscopy, stable C and N isotope analyses and lipid profiling of BIF to elucidate its biogenic potential. The Ijzermijn Iron Formation (∼2.95 Ga) of the upper Mozaan group of Pongola Supergroup, South Africa is typically laminated and featuring alternating layers of hematite and
