INTRODUCTION: Triage is the process whereby persons presenting to the emergency department are quickly assessed by a nurse and their need for care and service is prioritized. Research examining the care of persons presenting to emergency departments with psychiatric and mental health problems has shown that triage has often been cited as the most problematic aspect of the encounter. Three questions guided this investigation: Where do the decisions that triage nurses make fall on the intuitive versus analytic dimensions of decision making for mental health presentations in the emergency departm

Health visitors working in a socially and economically deprived area of the Wirral, Merseyside wanted to find innovative ways to address the high incidence of postnatal depression in their caseloads. Believing that exercise may have a beneficial effect on depression, they set up a project to make fitness activities more affordable and available to their client base. After an initial survey of local mothers had indicated support, a pilot "swim, gym and crèche" scheme was set up in a Leisure Centre in partnership with other agencies. The response from the pilot group was positive and suggested t

This study used the medium of videotaping to investigate the verbal and nonverbal communication that takes place between nurses and patients during chemotherapy administration. Eight chemotherapy sessions were video recorded and then analyzed for emerging themes. In addition, the videotapes were used in a reflective process with nurses. The findings showed that nurses were efficient in communicating about the physical and medical care of patients but were hesitant in exploring emotional issues. This study highlights the focus on physical symptoms and side effects by nurses in this setting. It

Children who are dependent on medical technology present unique challenges for families and health professionals who attempt to care for them at home. The medical and nursing needs of these children challenge and stretch the financial, social and emotional capacities of parents in ways that service providers do not fully understand. Case management is a collaborative parent/nurse model of community nursing practice that has been implemented to meet the needs of children and families with complex special needs where the care goes across primary and secondary care settings. The aim of case manag

Discrete-time hazard functions were estimated to determine factors associated with the probability of admission to a nursing home from the community, and the probability of discharge to the community from nursing home care, for 3,332 individuals enrolled in The National Long Term Care Channelling Demonstration. This was a relatively frail elderly population assessed to be at high risk for nursing home use. In predicting admissions, major factors were found to be ethnicity (Blacks and Hispanics were at much lower risk), homeownership, advancing age, living alone, exhibiting higher cognitive and

BACKGROUND: Gastroschisis, a congenital abdominal wall defect, is increasingly reported in sub-Saharan Africa, yet survival remains poor in low-income and middle-income countries, such as Uganda. Barriers to care extend beyond clinical limitations, with societal stigma and cultural beliefs influencing health-seeking behavior. This study explores the sociocultural perspectives surrounding gastroschisis in southwest Uganda using a socioecological model.
METHODS: A qualitative study was conducted with midwives and nurses from public and private facilities across 9 districts in Uganda. Participan

BACKGROUND: Public Health Nurses perform many of the fundamental services of tuberculosis control practices, and they ensure patients receive proper treatment, monitor their health, and work to prevent the spread of the disease through community outreach and screening. The cost of managing tuberculosis (TB) cases by Public Health Nurses (PHNs) is not well documented but is essential for performance management, quality improvement, program decision-making, and resource allocation.
METHODS: We quantified the direct cost of TB nurse case management and diagnostic workup for individuals with TB u

To characterize the primary health care provided community clinic personnel, we investigated the primary health care obtained by staff at Kupat Holim clinics. 21% of physicians working in these clinics were not registered with any primary health care physician, compared with 4.4% of other clinic workers (nurses, clerks, pharmacists, cleaning workers, etc.). 40% of the staff preferred to be treated by the clinic in which they worked, while 26% preferred treatment at a clinic near their homes. Excluding physicians, 73% of the staff would take medical problems to the primary care physician with w

Thailand's cannabis policy transition created a knowledge vacuum regarding the boundaries between authorized medicinal use and non-medical consumption, thereby increasing misuse risks. This study evaluated a culturally-tailored medicinal cannabis health literacy program delivered by Village Health Volunteers (VHVs) under public health nursing supervision as a community-based harm reduction strategy. An exploratory sequential mixed-methods design was employed in Northern Thailand. Phase 1 surveyed baseline health literacy ( n = 462 ). Phase 2 involved focus groups to co-design the intervention

Nurses are often responsible for the initiation of catherization procedures for patients within the hospital or community setting. This nursing role requires contemporary information on catheter selection and problem solving in the maintenance of urinary catheters. A descriptive survey with a questionnaire sent to registered and enrolled nurses (N = 709) within an Australian metropolitan area health service was undertaken to determine their current knowledge level in relation to catheter care practices. Registered nurses represented 91% of the sample, with 66% of the entire sample having 7 or
