Development of an eye protector for phototherapy on newborns: a technology.

Hyperbilirubinemia results from the predisposition of newborns to produce bilirubin and their ability to excrete it. The treatment applied is phototherapy; however, one of its complications is degeneration of the retina by exposure to light, making it essential to provide proper eye protection. The objective of this study is to describe the development of an invention (utility model patented) for eye protection in newborn phototherapy. This invention aims to replace the current widespread practice of using improvised means that are uncomfortable for the baby and disrupt the mother/child relati

Bridging Knowledge and Practice: Insights Into Hirschsprung's Disease and Home Management.

Hirschsprung's disease (HD) is a congenital intestinal motility disorder characterized by the absence of ganglionic cells in the distal intestine, leading to functional bowel obstruction and affecting 1 in every 5,000 neonates. A serious complication of HD is Hirschsprung-associated enterocolitis (HAEC), a life-threatening systemic illness responsible for a significant proportion of HD-related mortality. Proper management of HD, especially preventing HAEC, includes the use of rectal irrigations, which caregivers must master before their neonate's discharge. However, barriers such as short NICU

Retinopathy of prematurity screening by non-retinologists.

OBJECTIVE: To detect the screening efficiency of general ophthalmologists (ophthalmic residents) as well as non-ophthalmologists (pediatric residents and nurses posted in neonatal intensive care unit) in screening (ROP) retinopathy of prematurity on the basis of posterior pole vascular changes. METHODS: Prospective consecutive review in a tertiary care hospital setting. Five groups (each comprising of one ophthalmic resident, one pediatric resident and a nurse) examined the posterior pole vessels of 200 eyes of ROP with a direct ophthalmoscope and compared with an ROP specialist using indirec

Infant botulism.

Constipation in children is rarely thought of as a serious health condition. It is, however, one of the leading symptoms of the pathologic sequence in infantile botulism. The pathogenesis, common clinical manifestations, and common grounds in treatment and prognosis in infant botulism are summarized. The nursing role is presented, focusing on airway management, nutritional needs, environmental support, and parental role in an intensive care unit. An exemplar case study is presented.

Transcutaneous bilirubinometer: an instrument for clinical research.

The transcutaneous bilirubinometer can be an effective instrument for clinical research. With neonatal jaundice occurring in approximately 50-75% of newborns, nurse researchers investigating many important issues surrounding this commonly occurring condition will find the bilirubinometer useful in screening for jaundice, testing effectiveness of various therapeutic modalities, and evaluating clinical progress. This article presents a review of the literature reporting reliability and validity of meter findings and makes recommendations for meter use.

Management strategies to mitigate burnout and turnover intention while enhancing patient safety in neonatal intensive care: an integrative review.

BACKGROUND: Globally, the nursing workforce shortage in Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs) is evolving into a critical public health challenge. NICU nurses face a dual burden of high technical demands and intensive emotional labor, making them a high-risk group for professional burnout. The occupational wellbeing of nurses not only impacts individual health but also directly correlates with the clinical safety outcomes of preterm and ill neonates through the "health impairment process." OBJECTIVE: This study aims to introduce the Job Demands-Resources (JD-R) model as a systemic management

Hand hygiene for the prevention of infections in neonates.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

BACKGROUND: Annually, infections contribute to approximately 25% of the 2.8 million neonatal deaths worldwide. Over 95% of sepsis-related neonatal deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries. Hand hygiene is an inexpensive and cost-effective method of preventing infection in neonates, making it an affordable and practicable intervention in low- and middle-income settings. Therefore, hand hygiene practices may hold strong prospects for reducing the occurrence of infection and infection-related neonatal death. OBJECTIVES: To determine the effectiveness of different hand hygiene agents for

Utilizing the PCICS Nursing Guidelines in Managing the CICU Patient.

The Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Society (PCICS) Nursing Guidelines were developed to provide an evidence-based resource for bedside cardiac intensive care unit nursing care. Guideline topics include postoperative care, hemodynamic monitoring, arrhythmia management, and nutrition. These evidence-based care guidelines were presented at the 10th International Meeting of PCICS and have been utilized in the preparation of this article. They can be accessed at http://www.pcics.org/resources/pediatric-neonatal/. Utilization of these guidelines in practice is illustrated for single ventricle stag

A systematic review of improved positions and supporting devices for premature infants in the NICU.

BACKGROUND: In the neonatal intensive care unit, nurses often place premature infants in the supine, prone, and lateral positions. However, these positions do not always meet all the physiological needs of premature infants. Thus, many improved positions and various position-supporting devices have been studied to provide infants with a development-friendly and comfortable environment. AIM: We aimed to help nurses recognize and understand the various improved positions and devices, and to provide nurses with more options in addressing the needs of preterm infants. STUDY DESIGN: We searched P

Pentalogy of Cantrell: reviewing the syndrome with a case report and nursing implications.

Pentalogy of Cantrell is a rare syndrome characterized by 5 distinctive anomalies: epigastric omphalocele, sternal cleft, diaphragmatic defect, diaphragmatic pericardial defect, and intracardiac defect. There are limited case reports documented since its first description in 1958 due to either underdocumentation or underrecognition. One possibility for underrecognition is the idea that there can be incomplete expressions of the syndrome, and these cases may be reported as separate diagnoses. This article explores the case of an infant with the prenatal diagnosis of giant omphalocele who was fo

A preliminary study of bottom care effects on premature infants' heart rate and oxygen saturation.

The purposes of this study were to explore (1) the effect of buttock care (BC) on premature infant heart rate (HR) and oxygen saturation (SpO(2)), and (2) the effect of buttock lifting angle during BCs on HR and SpO(2). The study used a repeated measure design. A convenience sample of 11 premature infants in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) of a medical center were studied during 30 BC events. The subjects were of a gestational age of less than and 37 weeks, and postnatal age of less than one month, without known congenital abnormalities and without having been treated with sedatives du
