Imputed food insecurity as a predictor of disease and mental health in Taiwanese elementary school children.

This study investigated the association between food insecurity and Taiwanese children's ambulatory medical care use for treating eighteen disease types linked to endocrine and metabolic disorders, nutrition, immunity, infections, asthma, mental health, injury, and poisoning. We used longitudinal data in the Taiwan National Health Insurance scheme (NHI) for 764,526 elementary children, and employed approximate NHI data to construct three indicators imputed to food insecurity: low birth weight status, economic status (poverty versus non-poverty), and time of year (summer break time versus semes

Nutrition screening and assessment.

Both undernutrition and overnutrition contribute to increased risk of morbidity and mortality. Marasmus, kwashiorkor, and decreased micronutrient status are types of nutritional deficiencies, whereas obesity and problems resulting from dietary supplements are examples of overnutrition. Screening for malnutrition can be performed in the ambulatory, hospital, and institutional populations, each with methods appropriate for the target population. For patients determined to be at high risk, further nutrition assessment can be performed to help arrive at specific nutritional treatment goals. Identi

Malnutrition-associated reactive hypoglycemia induced by TPN.

The availability and widespread use of TPN enables physicians to help patients in a way that had not been possible in the past. However, in order to best utilize this modality, we must be aware of potential hazards and metabolic complications. Many patients receiving TPN, particularly those receiving perioperative TPN, are malnourished to various extents, and careful monitoring of glucose metabolism is warranted to avoid malnutrition-associated reactive hypoglycemia.

[Pharmacokinetics of aspirin in African children with normal nutrition and malnutrition].

Pharmacokinetics of aspirin given orally at antipyretic dose (12 mg/kg) were studied in 11 African children aged 4-48 months. In order to examine the influence of nutritional status on aspirin kinetics, children were classified according to Waterlow criteria. Blood samples were collected during the 8 hours following the initial dose. Albumin, prealbumin and transferrin plasma levels were measured and plasma salicylic acid (SA) concentrations determined by a fluorometric method. Nutritional status seemed to have no prominent effect on plasma concentrations of SA. The volume of distribution foun

The refeeding syndrome: a review.

Refeeding syndrome has been used to describe those phenomena, such as severe hypophosphatemia and other metabolic complications, seen in malnourished patients receiving concentrated calories via total parenteral nutrition. The purpose of this review is to clarify and broaden this definition, as well as to make recommendations for its recognition and, more importantly, prevention.

Optimal nutritional indexes in gastroenterology.

Malnutrition in gastrointestinal disease can result from several pathogenetic mechanisms. The resulting clinical and laboratory features of malnutrition vary according to the specific pathogenetic factors involved. Many of the causes of malnutrition in gastroenterology are similar to those found in other acute and chronic diseases. However, certain disorders, specific to gastroenterology, may alter nutritional indices independent of the usual causes of malnutrition. These include small bowel bacterial overgrowth and protein-losing enteropathy. The impact of these disorders on the indexes of nu

Treatment Approaches for Swallowing Disorders in Children.

A swallowing disorder or dysphagia is defined as a disorder in the sequence of swallowing, during the oral or pharyngeal phase, which compromises the safety and/or efficiency of transit of the food bolus to the esophagus. The evaluation of neurodevelopment, nutrition, and preventive medicine actions are as important as the clinical evaluation of dysphagia, so they must be included and systematized in all pediatric evaluations; This evaluation can be divided into different parts: bedside swallowing evaluation, instrumental swallowing evaluation, and additional studies. The management of swallow

[Multidisciplinary Team and Nutrition Management for Bariatric Surgery].

Bariatric surgery remains the most successful treatment for morbid obesity. Multiple departments may be involved due to the presence of various co-morbidities and the complex procedure. Thus, the establishment of a multidisciplinary team based on endocrinology, gastrointestinal surgery, nutrition, and psychology is important to ensure a successful bariatric surgery. Although the bariatric surgery has definite effectiveness in decreasing body weight and improving comorbidities, patients may still face the risks including protein and/or micronutrient malnutrition and other complications after the bar

Nutrition and other lifestyle influences on arterial aging.

As our world's population ages, cardiovascular diseases (CVD) will become an increasingly urgent public health problem. A key antecedent to clinical CVD and many other chronic disorders of aging is age-related arterial dysfunction, characterized by increased arterial stiffness and impaired arterial endothelial function. Accumulating evidence demonstrates that diet and nutrition may favorably modulate these arterial functions with aging, but many important questions remain. In this review, we will summarize the available information on dietary patterns and nutritional factors that have been stu

[Tube feeding of children with cystic fibrosis].

Three children suffering from cystic fibrosis, two girls aged 15 and 7 and one boy aged 18 years, presented growth retardation resulting from increased energy requirements and relative undernourishment. Since oral hyperalimentation was insufficiently efficacious, extra nutrition was administered by tube (at night): a naso-gastric tube, a percutaneous endoscopial gastrostomy catheter or an intragastric tube with a stopper in the skin. All three patients achieved a higher percentile line in the weight/height growth diagram, with stable or improved pulmonary function.

Position of the American Dietetic Association: Nutrition Intervention and Human Immunodeficiency Virus Infection.

It is the position of the American Dietetic Association that efforts to optimize nutritional status through individualized medical nutrition therapy, assurance of food and nutrition security, and nutrition education are essential to the total system of health care available to people with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection throughout the continuum of care. Broad-based efforts to improve health care access and treatment have stabilized HIV prevalence levels in many parts of the world and led to longer survival for people living with HIV infection. Confounding clinical and social issue

[Nutritional treatment in childhood Crohn's disease].

Growth retardation and delay in sexual maturation are the major complications of child-onset Crohn's disease (CD). Nutritional assessment and monitoring should comprise: weight and height measurement with calculation of respective velocities (growth velocity should be > or = 4-5 cm/year during the prepubertal period); pubertal staging; dietetic evaluation; laboratory analysis for mineral, vitamin and trace element deficiencies; bone age. At diagnosis, weight loss and growth delay are present in 80-90% and 1/3 of cases, respectively. In case of an acute flare-up in a CD child with normal nutrit

Beyond "What Should I Eat to Get Better?": Medical Literacy, Dietary Narratives, and Supportive Nutrition in Hematologic Diseases.

Patients newly diagnosed with hematologic diseases frequently ask, "What should I eat to get better?" This question reflects both a deeply rooted societal narrative linking lifestyle to recovery and a desire for personal agency in moments of vulnerability. Nutrition remains an essential component of supportive care. However, for most malignant and clonal hematologic disorders, there is limited clinical evidence that specific diets or commercially marketed supplements alter disease biology or replace standard therapy. In the digital era, dietary narratives are amplified by social media, online

Association between Malnutrition and Migraine Risk Assessed Using Objective Nutritional Indices.

Dietary triggers are frequently linked to migraines. Although some evidence suggests that dietary interventions might offer a new avenue for migraine treatment, the connection between migraine and nutrition remains unclear. In this study, we explored the association between nutritional status and migraines. Clinical data spanning 11 years were sourced from the Smart Clinical Data Warehouse. The nutritional statuses of 6603 migraine patients and 90,509 controls were evaluated using the Controlling Nutrition Status (CONUT) score and the Prognostic Nutrition Index (PNI). The results showed that i
