OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate the feasibility of oral feeding 48-72 hours after total laryngectomy of carcinoma of the larynx or pyriform sinus.
METHOD: Forty-two patients underwent total laryngectomy (included 34 patients of larynx carcinoma and 8 patients of pyriform sinus carcinoma) were random categorized into control group and experimental group. The experimental group of 21 patients who received oral feeding 48 to 72 h after total laryngectomy was compared with the control group of 21 patients who received oral feeding 10 to 12 days.

AIMS: To examine early adverse pulmonary effects of exposure to cotton dust, and to identify potential risk factors, including atopy for pulmonary responses to cotton dust.

BACKGROUND: Several reports have suggested an association between prematurity and hepatoblastoma (HB).
PROCEDURE: Data were collected by questionnaires from 105 children with HB enrolled in a Children's Cancer Group (CCG) study.
RESULTS: Observed over expected rates were increased about 2- and 15+-fold for prematurity (<37 weeks at birth) and low birth weight (<1,000 g) respectively. Similar data were derived from a later CCG study of 36 HB children.
CONCLUSIONS: Early reports of a possible association between prematurity and HB have been confirmed.

Married couples with a female agoraphobic spouse (n = 22) were compared with demographically similar community control couples (n = 21) on self-report and observational measures of marital interaction. OBJECTIVE: To improve the life quality of the patients with T1 glottic carcinomas, and obtain good vocal effect.
METHODS: Twenty-two patients under shoring laryngoscope and microscope were operated by surgery and laser. The phonetic parameters and vocal cord states of preoperative and postoperative patients were evaluated and analyzed objectively.
RESULTS: The three-year relapse rate was 9.0% (2/22), and the survival rate of three-year, four-year, five-year were 100%, 94.7%, 93.3% respectively. The postoperative phonetic quality was improved.

Intussusception is one of the most common causes of bowel obstruction in infancy which may require surgical treatment. We have recently recognized a pathologically weakened linear area located on the wall of the reduced colon at operation. 39 patients with oral submucous fibrosis (OSF) were divided into control and experimental groups. The control group included 22 OSF patients who were treated by oral administration of VitAD, VitBco and VitE, and the experimental group included 17 OSF patients who were treated with vitamins and tea pigment after their examinations of hemorheology. A total of 84 pediatric patients who ranged from 4 to 14 years old were examined. OBJECTIVES: To treat 212 cases of typhoid fever with Seven kinds of fluoroquinolones (FQNS) and to evaluate their clinical efficacy, bacterial susceptibility and adverse drug reaction (ADR).
METHODS: All the cases were hospitalized and uniantibiotic treated in which NFX group (n = 43) was compared with CP group (n = 28).

A 5-month-old girl, treated with bone marrow transplantation for severe combined immunodeficiency, developed two episodes of severe acute graft vs. host disease (GVHD) while teething. A dramatic improvement in GVHD was noted after the completion of tooth eruption. It is suggested that the release of interleukin-1, associated with the traumatized gingival tissue, is the triggering mediator for the GVHD.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disorders are known to be the major causes for infants requiring intensive care. The consequences of the treatment given to these infants suffering from congestive heart failure and/or cyanosis need to be evaluated.

Twenty patients (M:F 15:5) with electrophysiological evidence of predominant axonal lesion and fulfilling clinical criteria for Guillain Barré Syndrome were observed during a period of 6 years (1985-1990).
