A series of 442 women receiving subarachnoid block for various obstetrical procedures is described. These included caesarean section, instrumental delivery, manual removal of placenta, insertion of cervical suture and miscellaneous procedures. General anaesthesia was required in ten patients because subarachnoid block proved to be unsatisfactory. There were no serious complications. The overall headache rate, ascertained by daily direct questioning during hospital admission, was 26.2%. Clinical features of dural puncture headache (DPH) were present in 8.6% and equivocally so in a further 3.4%.

Ceftazidime ( CAZ ) exhibited in vitro activity greater than cefoperazone, cefotiam, cefmetazole and cefazolin and almost equal to cefotaxime (CTX), ceftizoxime (CZX) and latamoxef ( LMOX ) against E. coli and K. pneumoniae isolated from obstetrical or gynecological infections excluding urinary tract infections. Percutaneous electrical stimulation (PES) for relief of acute postoperative pain was applied in 10 patients after cesarean section and in 20 women who had undergone various gynecological operations. Changes of FHR long term variability (LTV) were studied in four groups of patients under different types of analgesia. The LTV was evaluated according to our visual criteria in each episode of more than one minute of duration on baseline fetal heart rate level between contractions. Mancini's technique of simple radial immunodiffusion was used in a study of the alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) content of the amniotic fluid (327 samples), the cord blood (100 samples) and the blood of the newborn infant (28 samples) in the days following birth.
