Decreasing incidence of occupational contact urticaria caused by natural rubber latex allergy in German health care workers.

BACKGROUND: The development of allergy to natural rubber latex (NRL) is a risk for health care workers. A regulation banning powdered NRL gloves was implemented in Germany in 1998. OBJECTIVE: This study assesses the effects of this regulation on the development of occupational skin disease caused by NRL in health care personnel working in facilities insured by the German statutory accident insurance company, covering some 1.8 million insured health care workers. METHODS: We reviewed the annual numbers of reported suspected cases of NRL-induced occupational allergies (mainly contact urticaria

Occupational upper extremity disorders in the federal workforce. Prevalence, health care expenditures, and patterns of work disability.

Upper extremity disorders (UEDs) account for a significant number of work-related illnesses in the US workforce. Little information exists on the distribution of UEDs, their associated health care and indemnity costs, or patterns of work disability. The study presented is an analysis of upper extremity claims within the federal workforce. In this study, the universe consisted of all claims accepted by the US Department of Labor, Office of Workers' Compensation Programs (OWCP), from October 1, 1993, through September 30, 1994. A total of 185,927 claims of notices of injury were processed during

Occupational exposure of health care workers (HCWs) to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV): stress reactions and counseling interventions.

As more people become infected with HIV, Health Care Workers (HCWs) have a greater likelihood of being exposed at work. HIV exposure threatens the life of the HCW and can elicit a stress reaction. Although HCWs have reactions similar to those of people who have been exposed to other traumatic events, the nature of this stressor and the length of time it lasts is unique. This article presents counseling interventions that address the needs of the individual HCW during this event. These counseling guidelines promote the HCW's discussion of the event and any relevant past unresolved traumatic exp

Occupational Balance, Quality of Life, and Recovery Among Older Mental Health Service Users-A Cross-Sectional Study.

Occupational balance is associated with better quality of life and recovery in mental health service users; however, research focusing on such relationships among older adults within this group remains scarce. This explorative cross-sectional study examined relationships between occupational balance and quality of life and recovery in 49 older mental health service users, while also investigating how anxiety/depression and living arrangement (cohabiting vs. living alone) influenced those relationships. Self-report questionnaires were used, then analyzed statistically. Participants generally pe

Occupational Health Screening Behaviors and Barriers Among Volunteer Firefighters: Results from a Cross-Sectional Survey in Texas.

BACKGROUND: Volunteer firefighters face occupational exposures that increase risks for cardiovascular disease, respiratory illness, mental health conditions, and cancer. Although the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recommends regular, comprehensive occupational health screenings, the standard lacks a clear protocol and implementation is voluntary; therefore adherence to these recommendations among volunteer firefighters remains unclear. This study examined occupational health screening behaviors and perceived barriers among volunteer firefighters in Texas. METHODS: An online, cros…

Characterizing volatile organic compounds from personal protective equipment users: Implications to cleanroom air quality and occupational health.

Human-related contaminants are the primary pollution source in cleanrooms. This study employed time-of-flight mass spectrometry (PTR-ToF-MS) to characterize volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions from breath and skin under different activity levels and personal protective equipment (PPE) conditions in a climatic chamber. The results show that, without PPE, breath and skin emission rates were 968.2 ± 350.8 μg h-1p-1 and 2115.8 ± 1813.7 μg h-1p-1, respectively. With PPE, breath emissions slightly increased to 1068.6 ± 472.7 μg h-1p-1, while skin emissions stabilized at 2181.1 ± 1302.5 μg h-1p

West Nile Virus Seroprevalence Among Outdoor Workers in Southern Italy: Unveiling Occupational Risks and Public Health Implications.

BACKGROUND: West Nile virus (WNV) is a mosquito-borne RNA virus, with birds as reservoirs and humans as incidental hosts. WNV often causes asymptomatic infections, but severe neuroinvasive disease occurs in fewer than 1% of human cases. Recent climatic changes and occupational exposure have increased its spread, particularly in Southern Italy. This study aimed to assess WNV seroprevalence and occupational risks among outdoor workers to guide targeted public health interventions. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted in the Apulia region, southeastern Italy, from November 2023 to A

Are state abortion bans an occupational health hazard for obstetrician-gynaecologists? Findings from a multistate qualitative study.

OBJECTIVES: Since the US Supreme Court's Dobbs v. Jackson decision, 17 states have imposed near-total abortion bans. These bans may negatively impact health and well-being of obstetrician-gynaecologists (OB-GYNs), due to high levels of work-related stress that the laws have created for them. The goal of the present study is to evaluate the impacts of post-Dobbs v. Jackson state abortion bans on occupational health and well-being of OB-GYNs. METHODS: The Study of OB-GYNs in Post-Roe America is a qualitative study of 54 OB-GYNs practising in 13 of the 14 states with near-total abortion bans as …

Occupational Benzene Exposure and Cancer Risk among Chinese Men: A Report from the Shanghai Men's Health Study.

BACKGROUND: Benzene exposure has been associated with increased risk of leukemia and other cancers; however, epidemiologic evidence is inconsistent for the latter, and confounding from smoking and alcohol was rarely adjusted. METHODS: We investigated associations between occupational benzene exposure and risk of leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma, and lung, stomach, liver, and kidney cancers in a population-based cohort of 61,377 men, ages 40 to 74 years. A job-exposure matrix, constructed by industrial hygienists specifically for the study population, was used to derive cumulative benzene exposure

[Monoclonal gammopathy of uncertain significance (MGUS) and occupational risk factors: criteria to carry out the health surveillance].

Monoclonal gammopathy of uncertain significance (MGUS) identifies a clinically asymptomatic and laboratory-based situation characterized by a modest monoclonal component (MC). In a limited percentage of cases, on a probabilistic basis, the asymptomatic genepremalignant stage could lead to multiple myeloma (MM). Materials and Methods. Based on literature data and available Guidelines on the subject, the diagnostic criteria and a methodological path are here suggested to the Occupational Physician to formulate a judgment of suitability for the task with exposure risk to RI or pesticides. Addressing occupational stress among health staff in nongovernment controlled Northern Syria: Supporting resilience in a dangerous workplace.

INTRODUCTION: Syrian medical staff working in non-government controlled areas of Syria operate in situations that expose them to great personal danger, while they must often face the same challenges as the people they help. Supporting the wellbeing of these staff is crucial to the operation of health services for internally displaced Syrians given the large-scale destruction of healthcare infrastructure. METHODS: Findings from a staffcare programme designed by a grassroots Syrian psychosocial organisation in Southern Turkey and implemented in a medical nongovernment organisation in Idlib in N
