Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DWI) is a well established method for the evaluation of intracranial diseases, such as acute stroke. DWI for extracranial application is more difficult due to physiological motion artifacts and the heterogeneous composition of the organs. However, thanks to the newer technical development of DWI, DWI has become increasingly used over the past few years in extracranial organs including the abdomen and pelvis. Most previous studies of DWI have been limited to the evaluation of diffuse parenchymal abnormalities and focal lesions in abdominal organs,

BACKGROUND: Magnetic resonance elastography (MRE) is a rapidly developing medical imaging technique that allows for quantitative assessment of the biomechanical properties of the tissue. MRE is now regarded as the most accurate noninvasive test for detecting and staging liver fibrosis. A two-dimensional (2D MRE) acquisition version is currently deployed at >2000 locations worldwide. 2D MRE allows for the evaluation of the magnitude of the complex shear modulus, also referred to as stiffness. The development of 3D vector MRE has enabled researchers to assess the biomechanical properties of smal

BACKGROUND: Abdominal compression (AC) using a belt-based system is widely employed in radiation therapy to limit respiration-induced target motion for abdominal and hepatic malignancies. While AC has demonstrated efficacy in reducing intrafraction motion amplitude, the interfractional anatomical consequences of daily compression belt (CB) placement variability remain poorly characterized. A clearer understanding of this variability is necessary to determine whether online adaptive radiotherapy (oART) is required to maintain dosimetric robustness throughout the treatment course.

Shorebirds within Charadriiformes show substantial variation in where, what, and how they eat. Foraging is aided by a complex feeding apparatus that may include a bill-tip organ with sensory pits and micro tongue tip spines. The morphology of these structures varies among species, but their evolutionary patterns have not been previously mapped. Here we present a comparative morphological analysis of 20 shorebird species across five families, using morphometric data from digital photographs and scanning electron microscopy to reconstruct the evolutionary history of bill-tip organ morphology and

Gynecology cancers can reap significant benefits from adaptive radiation therapy (ART) for four major reasons: organ motion, organ deformation, density change, and cavity filling. There are three recognized types of adaptive radiotherapy: offline, online, and real-time. This balance of improved dosimetry versus clinic resources, as well as the optimal timing for adaptations, is still under investigation. The emergence of on-demand online adaptive radiotherapy (OART) can solve the above problems. In this context, we introduce two patients with cervical cancer who used on-demand OART for the fir…

Mucopolysaccharidosis I (MPS I, McKusick 25280) is caused by the deficiency or absence of the lysosomal enzyme, alpha-L-iduronidase (EC 3.2.1.76). This inherited disease causes progressive cellular, tissue and organ damage across the entire phenotypic spectrum. Disabling, multi-organ disease is the rule, and generally results in death between the first and fourth decades of life. Recently, laronidase (Aldurazyme) [Genzyme], a specific recombinant human alpha-L-iduronidase) became commercially available as long-term enzyme replacement therapy. Results from the Phase I/II and III extended clinic

The evolution of the circulatory system from invertebrates to mammals has involved the passage from an open system to a closed in-parallel system via a closed in-series system, accompanying the increasing complexity and efficiency of life's biological functions. The archaic heart enables pulsatile motion waves of hemolymph in invertebrates, and the in-series circulation in fish occurs with only an endothelium, whereas mural smooth muscle cells appear later. The present review focuses on evolution of the circulatory system. In particular, we address how and why this evolution took place from a

OBJECTIVES: Cardiac dysfunction has been reported to occur in as much as 42% of adults with brain death, and may limit cardiac donation after brain death. Knowledge of the prevalence and natural course of cardiac dysfunction after brain death may help to improve screening and transplant practices but adequately sized studies in pediatric brain death are lacking. The aims of our study are to describe the prevalence and course of cardiac dysfunction after pediatric brain death.
DESIGN: Cross-sectional study.

Systemic sclerosis is an extremely variable disease in its manifestations and consequently, treatment needs to be individualized depending on the specific problems that each patient has. Limited scleroderma patients have a prolonged duration of Raynaud's phenomenon and puffy fingers before they develop any skin thickening, digital ulcers or gastrointestinal symptoms. They are likely to present with all the classic manifestations of scleroderma. Diffuse scleroderma patients have a much more acute systemic onset with marked whole hand swelling and may initially have only subtle skin thickening.

From flocking birds to swarming insects, collective motion enables groups to accomplish tasks beyond the capabilities of individuals. These behaviors emerge from local interactions among group members, but the interaction rules that organize collectives at the cellular scale remain poorly understood, in part because they are difficult to manipulate experimentally. Here we develop a cell-machine interface that enables us to rewrite the rules of collective migration. Cell-cell interaction rules are specified in software and implemented in living cells through real-time computer vision and closed

Dendritic architecture plays a crucial role in shaping how neurons extract behaviorally relevant information from sensory inputs. Wide-field neurons in the superior colliculus integrate visual information from the retina to encode cues critical for visually guided orienting behaviors. However, the principles governing how these neurons filter their inputs to generate appropriate responses remain unclear. Using viral tracing, two-photon calcium imaging, and computational modeling, we show that wide-field neurons receive functionally diverse inputs from 12 retinal ganglion cell types, forming a

Two-dimensional lead iodide perovskites have attracted significant attention for their potential applications in optoelectronic and photonic devices due to their tunable excitonic properties. The choice of organic spacer cations significantly influences the light emission and exciton transport properties of these materials, which are vital for their device performance. In this Perspective, we discuss the impact of spacer cations on lattice dynamics and exciton-phonon coupling, focusing on three representative 2D lead iodide perovskites that exhibit distinct types of structural distortions. Immunoglobulin G4 (IgG4)-related systemic disease (IgG4-RSD) is a new systemic entity associated with autoimmune pancreatitis (AIP). Other organ involvements take the form of sclerosing cholangitis, sclerosing cholecystitis, sclerosing sialadenitis, retroperitoneal fibrosis, and interstitial nephritis. Recently, lung diseases related to IgG4 have been described to occur with or without other organ involvement. These diseases include interstitial lung disease (ILD), pulmonary inflammatory pseudotumor, and lymphomatoid granulomatosis. Most of these cases occur in combination with AIP, which also

Spontaneous pattern formation in cortical activity may have consequences for perception, but little is known about interactions between sensory-driven and self-organized cortical activity. To address this deficit, we explored the relationship between ordinary stimulus-controlled pattern perception and the autonomous hallucinatory geometrical pattern formation that occurs for unstructured visual stimulation (e.g., empty-field flicker). We found that flicker-induced hallucinations are biased by the presentation of adjacent geometrical stimuli; geometrical forms that map to cortical area V1 as or

The "Frog in Space" (FRIS) experiment marked a major step for Japanese space life science, on the occasion of the first space flight of a Japanese cosmonaut. At the core of FRIS were six Japanese tree frogs, Hyla japonica, flown on Space Station Mir for 8 days in 1990. The behavior of these frogs was observed and recorded under microgravity. The frogs took up a "parachuting" posture when drifting in a free volume on Mir. When perched on surfaces, they typically sat with their heads bent backward. Such a peculiar posture, after long exposure to microgravity, is discussed in light of motion sick

Below the scale of long-range compartments and topologically associating domains (TADs) lie a diverse set of local chromatin organization features. Recent maps and single-molecule assays reveal modular sub-TAD units, nucleosome clutches, micro- and nanodomains, packing domains, microcompartments, and stripes arising from an interplay of loop extrusion, epigenetic affinity and condensates, and polymerase motion. We highlight how cohesin regulation and its crosstalk with transcription shape local topology, how microcompartments and affinity-driven hubs guide enhancer-promoter communication, and

Cancer-associated fibroblasts are major architects of the tumour stroma, where their aligned, elongated morphology forms a capsule that mechanically restrains tumour expansion. However, it is unclear how this supracellular organization emerges and persists. Here we show that fibroblasts generate a fibronectin matrix that progressively acquires the same nematic order as the cell layer, and that this matrix in turn feeds back to immobilize both cells and topological defects. Using long-term live imaging, traction force microscopy, matrix microfabrication and hydrodynamic modelling, we find that

Small organic photothermal agents (PTAs) with dual photothermal and imaging functions in the second near-infrared (NIR-II) window present a promising strategy for deep tumor treatment, however, fluorescence quenching conventional PTAs and low photothermal conversion efficiency (PCE) present obstacles to their widespread application. In this study, a novel "dendritic donor engineering" strategy was employed to design NIR-II organic PTAs (named DCTBBT and TCTBBT) with donor-π-acceptor-π-donor features and aggregation-induced emission (AIE) activity. Owing to the fine-tuning of the dendritic dono

The primate cerebral cortex is organized into specialized areas representing different modalities and functions along a continuous surface. The functional maps across the cortex, however, are often investigated a single modality at a time (e.g., audition or vision). To advance our understanding of the complex landscape of primate cortical functions, here we develop a polarization-gated wide-field optical imaging method for measuring cortical functions through the un-thinned intact skull in awake marmoset monkeys (Callithrix jacchus), a primate species featuring a smooth cortex. Using this meth
