The use of three-dimensional imaging to evaluate the effect of conventional orthodontic approach in treating a subject with facial asymmetry.

The growth of the craniofacial skeleton takes place from the 3(rd) week of intra-uterine life until 18 years of age. During this period, the craniofacial complex is affected by extrinsic and intrinsic factors which guide or alter the pattern of growth. Asymmetry can be encountered due to these multifactorial effects or as the normal divergence of the hemifacial counterpart occurs. At present, an orthodontist plays a major role not only in diagnosing dental asymmetry but also facial asymmetry. However, an orthodontist's role in treating or camouflaging the asymmetry can be limited due to the se

Cone-beam computed tomography-based deep learning-augmented model for screening sleep-disordered breathing risk.

INTRODUCTION: Sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) is a common but underdiagnosed disorder due to complex diagnostic procedures, posing a substantial global health burden. Craniofacial anatomy, such as mandibular retrusion and upper airway narrowing, plays a prominent role in SDB among Asian populations, underscoring the potential role of orthodontists in SDB risk screening. This study aimed to develop a deep learning-augmented, cone-beam computed tomography-based model for SDB risk screening in adults. METHODS: A training cohort included 110 patients with SDB and 110 sex-matched nonsnoring contr…

Orthodontic treatment time: can it be shortened?

INTRODUCTION: In the literature, no consensus has been reached about orthodontic treatment time. Similarly, the determining factors of the latter have not yet been completely elucidated. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present article was to deepen the discussion on the major factors influencing orthodontic treatment time, as well as to present some strategies that have proven effective in controlling and shortening it. METHOD: Based on evidences found in the literature, the method focussed in providing the basis for clinical decision-making. CONCLUSIONS: Treatment time varies according to the ty

Maxillary canine-first premolar transposition in the permanent dentition: treatment considerations and a case report.

Transposition is defined as the interchange of position between two adjacent teeth within the same quadrant of the dental arch. Permanent maxillary canine-premolar transposition is the most commonly observed transposition in the human dentition. Its prevalence is relatively low and its aetiology remains unclear, although it has been associated with genetic factors. It may also be related to a combination of localised factors such as malformation of adjacent teeth, tooth agenesis, retention of the deciduous canine and a history of local trauma. Treatment is selected on an individual case basis

Malocclusion associated with osteocartilaginous loose bodies of the temporomandibular joint.

BACKGROUND: The authors review the literature regarding osteocartilaginous loose bodies (that is, secondary synovial chondrometaplasia or secondary synovial chondromatosis) in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), present a case report and stress the importance of early diagnosis. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 57-year-old woman was referred to an orthodontist with a chief complaint of bite changes that took place over several years as the patient intermittently experienced TMJ problems. The authors noted radiopacities around the right TMJ space on a panoramic radiograph. They referred the patient to an or

Dental health for the pediatrician.

Pediatricians play an important role in promoting oral health care, and their advice regarding dental procedures or therapies may be solicited. This review is intended to provide answers for the more common questions that parents may have regarding the oral health of their children. The controversies surrounding early orthodontic therapy and mercury-containing amalgam fillings continue to be areas of contention. Why does the orthodontist want to initiate orthodontic treatment in a 7-year-old child? Is there justification for the banning of amalgam fillings, as has occurred in some countries? A

[Orthodontic consequences of mouth-breathing].

Mouth breathing habits are frequently associated with orthodontic problems. In the nasal area, the lack of ventilation leads to an underdevelopment of the maxilla: lateral and sometimes anterior cross bites appear. In the buccal area, the want of maintaining the mouth opened induces a new postural position of the mandible which alters the pattern of growth of the mandible ("long face"). The functional context of the buccal praxis is also altered: low or protruded tongue, deviant swallowing, troubles of speech.... The treatment of this pathological context needs a pluridisciplinary approach whe

Factors affecting unusual postoperative vertical downward movement of mandible after surgery-first approach using intraoral vertical ramus osteotomy.

BACKGROUND: In very rare cases, patients who have undergone surgery-first approach with intraoral vertical ramus osteotomy (IVRO) exhibit unusual downward movements of mandible even up to 1-year post surgery, which makes it difficult for orthodontists to stabilize the occlusion during the postoperative orthodontic period. The aim of this study was to identify factors affecting the unusual downward movement of the mandible 1-year after the surgery-first approach using IVRO, while focusing on cephalometric values. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study sample was divided into two groups based…

[Seniors and orthodontics: from denial to a reasonable choice].

When patients older than 60 decide to undergo orthodontic treatment, their motivation is not merely for esthetic purposes; it is also intended to preserve their biological capital. Their treatment is often complicated. The orthodontist has to take into account any particularities related to their past dental or even orthodontic history. Their treatment are freed, sometimes due to necessary compromises, from constraints that are determined by the occlusion, the periodontium or by prosthetic devices which are sometimes implant borne. For some patients, the original shape of their teeth that make

Management of impacted teeth in children.

Ankylosis remains one of the major complications associated with impacted teeth in children. Orthodontically-assisted eruption of an ankylosed tooth may intrude or displace the adjacent teeth. Children who undergo orthodontically assisted eruption should be followed closely to ensure that movement of an impacted tooth is occurring. In general, the removal or assisted eruption of impacted teeth in children requires a thoughtful interdisciplinary evaluation between the surgeon and orthodontist/primary dental care provider. Factors that must be considered include operative feasibility, orthodonti

Contemporary Class II Division 2 nonextraction adult treatment.

Achieving ideal results when treating a difficult malocclusion is a challenge that orthodontists frequently encounter. Maintaining those results is sometimes more challenging than the correction itself. As specialists in orthodontics, we should be able to apply bone physiology concepts during the diagnosis and treatment planning process and predict how bone will react after biomechanical stimuli. Understanding bone physiology and the biology of tissue response during orthodontic tooth movement should allow us to develop the proper mechanical design and consequently the therapeutic procedures n…
