Background and Objectives: Femoral malunion, defined as healing of a femoral fracture in an anatomically incorrect position, can lead to significant biomechanical and functional impairment despite modern fixation techniques achieving union rates near 99%. The lack of a universal definition and standardized management approach continues to hinder optimal outcomes. This review aims to synthesize the literature on the causes, clinical presentation, radiologic assessment, surgical indications, corrective procedures, and outcomes of femoral malunion to guide clinical decision-making and future rese

INTRODUCTION: Femoral neck fractures (FNF) represent a significant challenge in orthopedic practice, demanding prompt intervention to restore function and mobility in affected individuals. Numerous surgical interventions have been developed to address these fractures, including internal fixation with devices such as the Femoral Neck System (FNS, DePuy Synthes, Inc., West Chester, PA, USA). However, the optimal fixation system remains unclear. Understanding the postoperative outcomes associated with these interventions is crucial for optimizing patient care and informing treatment decisions.

Stress-induced corrosion impairs the mechanical integrity of magnesium (Mg) and its alloys as potential orthopedic implants. Although there has been extensive work reporting the effects of stress on Mg corrosion in vitro, the geometric design principles of the Mg-based orthopedic devices still remain largely unknown. In this work, a numerical simulation model mimicking fractured bone fixation and surgical animal models were applied to investigate the effects of the geometric design of Mg screws on the stress distribution and the stress-induced degradation behavior. Finite element (FE) analysis

INTRODUCTION: In the civilian trauma literature, femoral neck fractures in young adults are considered an orthopedic 'urgency'. To our knowledge, there have been no studies looking at the outcomes of these injuries in the combat setting. The purpose of this study is to determine the outcomes of war related femoral neck fractures; the rates avascular necrosis associated with these injuries as well as the effect time to fixation has on the development of avascular necrosis.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of 21 patients who sustained combat related femoral neck fractures from Octob

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of modified technique for removing Nuss bar after Nuss procedure.
METHODS: We reviewed 186 patients undergoing bar removal after repair of pectus excavatum with Nuss procedure at our institution from December 2008 to February 2012. All patients had unilateral incision (metallic stabilizers have been used on one side in all patients). Under general anesthesia with single lumen tracheal tube or laryngeal mask, with the patient lying down in supine position, the bar was pulled out along the thoracic wall without overturning or straightening.

STUDY DESIGN: A 2-year follow-up review of 62 patients with severe rigid scoliosis (>120°).
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness and safety of halo-pelvic traction (HPT) for treating severe rigid scoliosis (>120°).
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Severe rigid scoliosis (>120°) is still a challenge for spine surgeons. A combination of presurgical HPT traction, osteotomy, and internal fixation could be a safe and effective solution for these cases.
METHODS: We reviewed the records of all the patients with severe rigid scoliosis (>120°) treated with presurgical HPT from 2013 through 2017. Radi

Twelve patients with tibial shaft fractures and evidence of compartment syndrome or with documented elevated compartment pressures were treated with an unreamed locked intramedullary nail and a single-incision lateral four-compartment fasciotomy. There were six closed fractures and three grade I and three grade II open fractures. Ten fractures have achieved a solid union without shortening or significant angulation at an average follow-up of 8.1 months (range 4-26). Two patients were lost to follow-up. There were two delayed unions and one nonunion, all of which healed after additional treatme

The AO spinal internal fixation system uses 5.0 mm diameter transpedicular Schanz screws with 7.0 mm diameter fully threaded stainless steel rods. Originally developed for the treatment of thoracolumbar and lumbar spine fractures, it can be used for a variety of spinal disorders. A prospective study has been carried out, and the first 48 patients have been reviewed. The results for those patients with fractures are excellent. In burst fractures, it has been possible to decompress the canal and restore lordosis. In only half of the cases of spondylolisthesis has it been possible to improve the

Treatment results and complications of 404 percutaneous drill wire fixations in patients with dislocated radial fracture of typical situation will be reported. The most frequent complications were secondary impression of fracture, transient paraesthesia as well as perforation through the skin by drill wire. There was no case of osteitis or pseudo-arthrosis. Treatment results were judged excellent or good in 84% of cases, satisfactory in 11% and poor in 5%. For dislocated wrist fractures and for elderly patients osteosynthesis with percutaneous drill wire according to Willenegger is superior to

Pseudo-arthrosis was recorded from 13 per cent of patients whose clavicular fractures had been treated by wire fixation. Too short fragmental splinting, postoperative diastasis, use of too thin wires (2 mm in diameter) or intricate shapes of fracture (fragmental) were causes of poor results. Neither parallel nor sagittal skin incision was cosmetically acceptable. Kirschner's wire fixation, when applied to short fractures in the central third of the clavicula--has proved to be a simple and promising method of stabilisation.

INTRODUCTION: There are several causes of peri-implant edema, pain, and swelling around implants after orthopedic fixation device application for fracture repair. The most common and well-known reason is infection, however, granulomas associated with foreign body reactions are rarely seen. In this report we present a case of a granulomatous reaction mimicking a hydatid cyst and sarcoma. We emphasize the importance of differential diagnosis in triggering appropriate management of the patient. Our case was unusual; to the best of our knowledge no similar clinical or pathological findings have be

BACKGROUND: Degraded and osteogenic property of coated magnesium alloy was evaluated for the fracture fixation in rabbits.
METHODS: Magnesium alloy AZ31 with a different coating thickness by microarc oxidation was used, and the bilateral radial fracture model was created by the bite bone clamp. Thirty-six New Zealand white rabbits in weight of 2.5~3.0 kg were randomly divided into A, B, and C groups at four time points and other 3 rabbits as the control group without magnesium alloy. Coated magnesium alloy AZ31 was implanted on the fracture and fixed with silk thread. Indexes such as general

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Despite improved care of multiple injured patients, controversial data about the best time point for decompression and stabilization of spine fractures and spinal cord injuries are published. Some studies even question the value of surgical management.
RECENT FINDINGS: In several mostly retrospective studies and a meta-analysis, there is growing evidence that early decompression and stabilization of spine injuries seems to be beneficial, especially in more severely injured patients. Early stabilization seems to reduce length of stay and pulmonary complications. Some studies

Immediate open reduction with internal fixation was performed on 66 open fractures (54 patients) of the long bones in the upper or lower extremity, including one clavicle. Using the classification system of Gustilo, there were 13 (20%) type I, 30 (45%) type II, 11 (16%) type IIIA, six (9%) type IIIB, and six (9%) type IIIC soft tissue injuries. Thirty-two patients had associated major multiple trauma. Eighty-eight percent of the patients had good functional results using a modification of Katenjian's criteria. There were three late deep infections (4.5%), all at the sites of type III fractures

BACKGROUND: In Mason classification type II radial head fractures, compared to plate fixation, fixation with cannulated headless screws and absorbable pins has been reported to provide more favorable postoperative outcomes, including less postoperative limitation in range of motion. The fact that radial head fractures are less prone to weight-bearing during fracture union further supports the use of absorbable screws as a suitable alternative treatment option in radial head fractures. This study aimed to perform fixation through open reduction using bioabsorbable magnesium screws for Mason typ

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Our previously published data suggested several risk factors for infection after the Nuss procedure. We aimed to further elucidate these findings.
METHODS: An IRB-approved (14-03-WC-0034), single institution, retrospective review was performed to evaluate the incidence of postoperative Nuss bar infections associated with seven variables. These were subjected to bivariate and multivariable analyses. A broad definition of infection was used including cellulitis, superficial infection with drainage, or deep infection occurring at any time postoperatively.
RESULTS: Over 7year

Slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) is a common hip disorder among adolescents, whereby the epiphysis is displaced posteriorly and inferiorly to the metaphysis. Treatment modalities aim to stabilize the epiphysis, prevent further slippage, and avoid complications associated with long-term morbidity, such as osteonecrosis and chondrolysis. Controversy exists with SCFE regarding prophylactic fixation of the contralateral, painless, normal hip, the role of femoroacetabular impingement with SCFE, and whether in situ fixation is the best treatment method for SCFE. This article presents and dis
