Chronic nonbacterial osteomyelitis (CNO), also known as chronic recurrent multifocal osteomyelitis (CRMO), is a rare autoinflammatory bone disease primarily affecting children and adolescents. This review presents a comprehensive analysis of the intricate relationship between CNO and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), shedding light on shared pathophysiological mechanisms and clinical management. A thorough literature review was conducted, encompassing 24 case reports involving 40 patients. The demographic distribution of patients revealed a near-equal gender ratio, with a median age of diagnos…

Rhino-orbito-cerebral mucormycosis (ROCM) is the most commonly noted form of mucormycosis, which is the most common secondary fungal infection following severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection. Osteomyelitis is one of the rare sequelae of ROCM, frontal osteomyelitis being the rarest. We present four patients of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)-associated mucormycosis, who presented with frontal bone osteomyelitis after being treated for ROCM surgically and medically. This is the first case series highlighting this complication in post-COVID-19 mucormycosis pat…

Many cases of vertebral osteomyelitis (VO) and infective endocarditis (IE) co-infection have been reported, and it has been recognized that attention should be paid to the possibility of both diseases co-existing during diagnosis and treatment. However, the incidence, clinical status, and outcomes of IE in patients with VO remain unclear. For this study, the eligibility criteria for patient recruitment included all cases of VO at the five medical university hospitals. Patients with a history of spinal surgery were excluded from this study. Echocardiography was routinely performed for all patie…

Gibbus deformity is defined by the collapse of one or more vertebral bodies, which results in kyphosis and is often the consequence of infection, metabolic, or congenital irregularities in the vertebrae. In this report we present a unique case of a young male with inadequately treated MRSA bacteremia complicated by lumbar osteomyelitis with progression to severe joint destruction and a marked Gibbus deformity.

Neutrophilic dermatoses include a heterogeneous group of entities. Uncommonly, they can accumulate aseptic neutrophilic abscesses in other tissues in addition to the skin. A 34-year-old female complained of a headache which was unresponsive to usual drugs. A TAC revealed an osteolytic lesion in the right parietal bone. The biopsy showed osteomyelitis. One year later, pyoderma gangrenosum appeared in the anterior aspect of both legs. The headache and the cutaneous lesions disappeared after treatment with oral prednisone. The bone involvement in the background of neutrophilic dermatoses is excep…

Campylobacter fetus is a rare pathogen in humans. It mainly causes invasive infections in immunosuppressed patients. Herein, we report the first case of cervical vertebral osteomyelitis in a previously healthy man with a history of daily alcohol consumption. Treatment was given for six weeks with excellent clinical recovery and normalization of laboratory markers.

Chronic recurrent multifocal osteomyelitis (CRMO) is an inflammatory disorder of bones first reported by Giedion et al. in 1972. It is a disease of childhood, comparable to SAPHO (synovitis, acne, pustulosis, hyperostosis, and osteitis) in adults. CRMO presents with pain and swelling overlying the involved bones. Inflammatory markers are usually raised and X-rays usually show sclerotic lesions. MRI demonstrates the extent of the lesions accurately and associated soft tissue changes. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and corticosteroids are the mainstays of the management. We report…

Osteomyelitis of the acetabulum is a rare condition accounting for only 12% of pelvic osteomyelitis cases. This report describes a previously healthy 10-year-old girl with subacute acetabular osteomyelitis and subsequent development of secondary septic arthritis of the hip. The patient presented with 3 weeks of groin pain, elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate and C-reactive protein, synovial thickening of the hip on ultrasonography and diffuse signal uptake in the acetabulum on magnetic resonance imaging. Despite antibiotic therapy, her symptoms worsened clinically, and repeat Magnetic reso…

We present the case of an 8-year-old girl with chronic recurrent multifocal osteomyelitis (CRMO) involving the orbit and facial bone and causing left optic neuropathy. She presented with intermittent left periorbital swelling and a history of CRMO diagnosed 5 years earlier. Her disease responded well to adalimumab; however, delayed presentation resulted in permanent unilateral optic nerve atrophy and reduced vision. Orbital inflammatory disease is a rare manifestation of CRMO, and early recognition of the disease and treatment may prevent irreversible vision loss.

Background Skull base osteomyelitis (SBO) is an uncommon entity and carries a high mortality rate. It can be be odontogenic, sinogenic, or otogenic in origin, in addition to being a complication of skull surgery/trauma. Pseudomonas is one of the most commonly identified pathogen. The goal of the study is to describe the clinical spectrum, microbiologic characteristics, treatment, and its response among different patients with SBO. In addition, we compared the outcomes of bacterial and fungal osteomyelitis. Methodology This is a single-center retrospective analysis of patients with SBO who pres…

Candida parapsilosis osteomyelitis is a rare diagnosis. Candidal infection can occur via hematogenous or local spread. A localized swelling around a bony structure should raise clinical suspicion. Diagnosis is made by a combination of imaging modalities and biopsy. Anecdotal case reports have been reported in medical literature and treatment guidelines are very limited. Treatment modality includes a combination of surgical debridement and antifungal therapy.

PURPOSE: Skull base osteomyelitis (SBO) is an uncommon and a potentially life-threatening condition if not promptly recognized and properly treated. The aim of our study was to present a 32-case series of patients diagnosed with SBO at a single center.
METHODS: In this retrospective study, we reviewed the data of patients diagnosed with otogenic SBO between January 2011 and January 2020. 32 patients were enrolled in the study. SBO diagnosis was based on a combination of symptoms and physical examination, bone scan, brain magnetic resonance imaging, and pathologic examination findings. The fol…

Chronic recurrent multifocal osteomyelitis is a rare autoinflammatory, immunologic disorder. It may involve recurrent inflammatory bone pain associated with aseptic osteomyelitis. If the diagnosis is delayed, it negatively influences quality of life by leading to persistent symptoms or joint damage. Herein, we report a 16-year-old male patient who presented with left hip and right knee pain lasting for the last two months and was diagnosed as having chronic recurrent multifocal osteomyelitis as a result of further evaluation. Improvement was achieved with prednisolone and methotrexate treatmen…

Skull base osteomyelitis is a serious disease with a high risk of complications including neuroinfection. Typically, the inflammation of the skull base results from infection from neighboring tissues. In case of malignant otitis externa, inflammation disseminates from the external auditory canal. In this study, we present our experience with seven patients diagnosed with skull base osteomyelitis that began with otitis externa and have been treated in our department for the last 10 years. Department Patient Database was searched for the diagnosis skull base osteomyelitis. The search covered the…

BACKGROUND: Chronic recurrent multifocal osteomyelitis (CRMO) is a rare auto-inflammatory bone disorder that primarily affects young girls, with a mean age of 10 years at onset. Generally, it is a self-limited disease. However, recent data indicate that more than 50% of patients have a chronic persistent disease and about 20% a recurring course of this condition. Also, there are more cases reported with associated auto-inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. In this case report, we present a rare case of sporadic CRMO in which the patient eventually developed C-ANCA (cytoplasmic anti-neutrophil …
