Evaluation of hearing and speech-language in preschool children: how important, why we should perform?

The aim of the study was to present the hearing and speech-language findings of preschool children. The children in this study were aged 3-5 years. Sixtyseven of 239 children (28.0%) had been referred to a physician because of possible middle ear problems, and 25 of the 67 children had slight and mild conduction type hearing loss with air-bone gaps. One of 239 children had profound sensorineural hearing loss. Speech-language problems were found in 70 of 239 children (29.3%). Necessary attention should be paid to the evaluation of hearing and speech-language skills in preschool-aged children to

The following procedures were used with each neonate: otolaryngological examination (with otoscopy), tympanometry, automated otoacoustic emission (AOAE), and auditory brainstem response (ABR). A total of 5282 infants were examined. Subjects were categorized into two groups: the first group consisted of 2986 (56.53%) neonates with risk factors of …

An unusual otoscopic finding associated with a type II first branchial cleft anomaly.

OBJECTIVE: We report an interesting case involving a child with a branchial cleft anomaly with two fistulous tracts, one of which was associated with an unusual otoscopic finding. CASE REPORT: A seven-year-old girl presented with an apparent type II first branchial cleft cyst after an acute infection. Parotidectomy and excision of the tract were performed, with subsequent development of pre-auricular swelling three months later. Further surgery was performed to remove a second duplication anomaly of the external auditory canal. Otomicroscopy showed a fibrous band arising from the wall of the

Primary cholesteatoma of petrous bone presenting as cervical fistula.

A unique case of primary cholesteatoma of the petrous bone is described. The patient presented with a cutaneous fistula of the anterior cervical triangle and was initially diagnosed and treated as sebaceous cyst or imflammatory lympha node for 3 months. Later examination showed white mass in the right external auditory canal and a severe conductive hearing loss. Radiological findings revealed a massive soft tissue consistent with cholesteatoma in the right petrous bone. The lesion was successfully managed with an endoscopy-assisted technique leaving the neurovascular structures in situ without

Aberrant internal carotid artery as a cause of objective pulsatile tinnitus.

An aberrant internal carotid artery (ICA) is a rare vascular anomaly and causes to objective pulsatile tinnitus and retrotympanic mass. In the past, it was often diagnosed during ear surgery or biopsy, which may lead to massive bleeding. We present a case of 37-year-old woman complaining of pulsatile tinnitus. The tinnitus was objectively audible at the right ear through an otoscope. Previously, MRA plays a pivotal role in the evaluation of the aberrant ICA. But in this case, the resolution of magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) was not enough to portray the course of the ICA, because dephasi

Diagnosis and treatment of otitis media in dogs and cats.

Otitis externa/media is commonly found in dogs with chronic ear diseases and in cats with upper respiratory disease and polyps. Diagnosis of otitis media requires attention to history and clinical signs, but it also requires other methods of determining disease within the bulla. If the integrity of the eardrum cannot be determined, assume that there is middle ear disease and proceed accordingly. It is prudent to take necessary precautions to avoid the use of potentially ototoxic ear cleaners or topical medications in suspected otitis media cases. Therapeutic success is possible using systemic

Sudden Unilateral Hearing Loss and Vertigo in an Adolescent: Viral Labyrinthitis Versus Idiopathic Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss.

Labyrinthitis and idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) are uncommon in children and are both considered otologic emergencies, as delayed diagnosis can lead to permanent disability. We describe a 15-year-old boy with a history of focal cortical dysplasia and a single remote seizure who presented with abrupt left-sided hearing loss, tinnitus, vertigo, nausea, and headache. Neurologic examination revealed no focal deficits; however, marching Romberg testing demonstrated instability, and otoscopy revealed only a small left middle-ear effusion. Laboratory studies, including complete…

Risk Factors for Middle Ear Barotrauma in Patients with Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Undergoing Monoplace Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

Background: Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is the standard treatment for moderate to severe carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning, but middle ear barotrauma (MEB) remains a common complication. This study identified risk factors associated with MEB in patients undergoing monoplace HBOT. Methods: This retrospective cohort study included patients treated for CO poisoning with monoplace HBOT at a tertiary academic hospital between May 2021 and December 2023. MEB severity was assessed before and after treatment using video otoscopy and graded according to the modified O'Neill Grading System. Results: M…

Comparative performance of Gemini and DeepSeek large language models in surgical decision support for mastoidectomy in chronic otitis media with cholesteatoma.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the clinical accuracy of two state-of-the-art Large Language Models (LLMs), Gemini Pro v3.1 and DeepSeek v3.2, in providing surgical decision support and postoperative management for mastoidectomy using expert-validated real patient data. METHODS: A retrospective analysis included 121 mastoidectomy cases performed for chronic otitis media with cholesteatoma. Clinical case scenarios, including otoscopy, pure-tone audiometry, and radiological findings, were presented to both models. AI-generated responses were evaluated using a 100-point scoring system developed by four ot…

Affective Temperaments and Anger in Patients with Tinnitus and High-Frequency Sensorineural Hearing Loss: A Pilot Cross-Sectional Study.

Background and Objectives: Chronic tinnitus in patients with bilateral sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) is frequently linked to psychological distress and affective temperament traits. This study examined audiological characteristics, psychological profiles, and their interrelations in adults with tinnitus. Materials and Methods: In this cross-sectional single-centre study, 38 adults with chronic tinnitus and bilateral SNHL underwent otoscopy, tympanometry, and pure-tone audiometry. Participants were classified into two audiometric groups: high-frequency gently sloping (N = 19) and ski-slope …

Blood From Both Ears: A Hidden Mandibular Condyle Fracture Revealed by Otorrhagia.

Otorrhagia following mandibular trauma may appear straightforward; however, underlying external auditory canal (EAC) fractures and associate … EAC disruption. Radiological assessment with computed tomography (CT) and direct visualization via otoscopy are essential to detect these injuries early and guide conservative management. Our experience emphasizes that visible otorrhagia alone does not reveal the full extent of injury. Prompt clot removal and canal packing helped prevent adhesion and long …

Assessment of Outer and Middle Ear Pathologies in Lilongwe, Malawi.

Outer and middle ear pathologies are known to disproportionately affect low-income countries but data is limited. We aim to quantify the prevalence rate of patients presenting with middle/outer ear pathologies at ABC Hearing Clinic and Training Centre in Lilongwe, Malawi. Audiological consultations (adult and paediatric) from 2018-2020 were reviewed for outer and middle ear pathologies. Secondary outcomes included patient type (private vs. community) compared to otoscopy findings, tympanometry findings, need for follow up, and follow up compliance. Out of 1576 patients reviewed, the proportion…
