BACKGROUND: Panniculitides are well-recognized clinicopathologic entities but the non-specificity of their clinical and pathological feature … ection in five cases and five cases remained unclassified. Skin biopsy evaluation provided definite panniculitis diagnosis in 53 cases including EN (28 cases), leukocytoclastic vasculitis (seven cases), NV (four cases), superficial thrombophlebitis (ST) (two cases), eosinophillic panniculitis (EP) (three cases), infection-related panniculitis (five cases), and …

Lupus panniculitis (LP) or lupus erythematosus profundus (LEP) is a lupus-associated dermatologic condition predominantly affecting young to middle-aged women in which the deep dermis and subcutaneous fat are mainly involved. The lesions are usually located on the forehead, cheeks, proximal aspect of the limbs, and buttocks, though cases have occasionally been reported with orbital, breast, and salivary gland involvement. Descriptions of imaging findings of LP are very scarce in the literature. We describe the CT scan imaging features of the case of a patient with head and neck LP.

Factitial panniculitis can be produced by mechanical, physical, or chemical means. It often causes an unusual clinical and histological feature that defies diagnosis until self-inoculation or mechanical trauma is suspected and proved. Acupuncture has been used in East Asia for centuries as a method of treatment for various conditions, especially for pain relief, and is known to be a relatively safe system. The needles are often manipulated by hand once they are placed at the acupuncture points. Electroacupuncture, the application of pulsating electrical current to acupuncture needles, was deve…

Specific and nonspecific panniculitis may occur during the course of connective tissue diseases. However, association of panniculitis and rheumatoid arthritis has only rarely been described, and with so few reports, it is difficult to know the significance of this unusual association. We describe 2 patients with rheumatoid arthritis and features of Sjögren syndrome in whom panniculitis developed during the course of the disease. Histologic confirmation of septal panniculitis was established in one case and the panniculitis in this case improved as the arthritis resolved.

Pancreatic panniculitis is an uncommon complication of pancreatic disease, which is characterized by liquefactive necrosis of the subcutaneous fat and may constitute the first evidence of a pancreatic illness. Herein, we report a case where cutaneous lesions of pancreatic disease were recognized prior to detection of an acute episode of a known chronic pancreatitis.

Gouty panniculitis, with deposits of urate crystals in the subcutaneous tissue, is a rare dermatologic sequela of gout. We report a case of a 37-year-old Hispanic man who presented with ulcerating nodules on the posterolateral aspect of his legs. An elevated serum uric acid level along with the findings of the histopathologic examination supported a diagnosis of gouty panniculitis. The clinical features, histology, and therapy of this rare manifestation of gout are reviewed.

The inflammatory disease of the subcutaneous fatty tissue are called panniculitis. The panniculitis has got a septal and a lobular histopathologic type. In the opinion of the etiologic classification occurs idiopathic (primary) or secondary entity. The secondary illnesses develop as the result of physical, chemical, biochemical, immunological, degenerative and proliferative reactions. In a part of panniculitis the etiologic factor is unknown. The authors demonstrate a rare type of the panniculitis, the Weber-Christian syndrome. This disease is an acute relapsing panniculitis with unknown etiol…

A 51-year-old woman who had been suffering from mixed connective tissue disease (MCTD) for 8 years developed an erythematous rash with pain and tenderness on her left leg. A skin biopsy revealed septal panniculitis with multiple lymphangiectasis. No vasculitis was observed. An increase in her prednisolone dose from 5 mg to 20 mg/day led to an improvement in these lesions. Panniculitis is very rare in MCTD. The clinical significance of panniculitis in MCTD is also discussed.

The clinical and pathological findings in three unrelated weimaraners with pyrexia and multiple subcutaneous nodules are reported. Abdominal pain was an additional feature in two of the dogs and clinical investigations revealed inflammation of subcutaneous, mesenteric and falciform fat. Histopathological findings were consistent with pansteatitis. In the third dog, lesions were apparently limited to the subcutis and, hence, a diagnosis of nodular panniculitis was made. Microbiological examination of tissues was negative in all dogs, and there was no evidence of pancreatic disease. This report …

BACKGROUND: On rare occasions tumours of the pancreas produce high amounts of pancreatic lipase. The enzyme activity in the blood and in different tissues causes a syndrome called nodular panniculitis by focal necrosis of lipids and a concomittant inflammatory reaction.
CASE REPORT: A 72-year-old man was admitted to the dermatology clinic with the diagnosis of erythema nodosum. The patient had been well until 3 months earlier when painful red nodes developed on the skin of both shanks. He complained of profuse night sweating and a weight loss of 10 kg within that time but did not have fever. …

Although rare, panniculitis and polyarthritis can be the presenting manifestations of pancreatitis. Early recognition of this triad is critical because of the high mortality rate from pancreatic disease when the diagnosis is delayed. We report a patient with chronic alcohol intake whose sole presentation was severe polyarthritis and skin lesions secondary to chronic pancreatitis associated with extra pancreatic pseudocyst. Both arthritis and skin lesions disappeared after partial pancreatectomy and pancreatic stent insertion for a pancreatic duct stricture.

Lupus erythematosus panniculitis (profundus), a rare variant of chronic panniculitis, sometimes develops during the course of discoid lupus erythematosus or systemic lupus erythematosus. A 61-year-old woman had suffered from autoimmune hepatitis type I for 5 years. Prednisolone had been administered as maintenance therapy and her hepatitis had been well controlled. However, asymptomatic erythematous indurated nodules developed symmetrically in both pre-auricular regions, and skin biopsy revealed lupus erythematosus panniculitis (profundus). Increase in dosage of prednisolone resolved the skin …

This is a retrospective reassessment of the most important cytopathologic features of 23 FNA smears with a cytologic diagnosis of panniculitis (PN). Patients were sent by clinicians. Clinical diagnoses were as follows: 16 suspicious of PN; three cutaneous metastases of an extracutaneous primary neoplasm; four with no clinical diagnosis. Thirteen cases were subsequently submitted to histopathologic study. The following cytoarchitectural patterns were found to be very useful for the cytologic diagnosis of PN: adipocytes intermingled with foamy histiocytes, donut-like granulomas, aggregates of ad…

The authors report a case of septal panniculitis induced by atenolol in a patient with coronary artery disease. Several tender, erythematous, suppurated subcutaneous nodules appeared over the metacarpal-phalanx and interphalanx joints of both hands. Hematology indicated a transient inflammatory immunomediated disorder, with an increase of cytotoxic suppressor lymphocytes and presence of antinuclear antibodies. The dramatic inflammatory involvement of the subcutaneous connective tissue could have eventually progressed toward fibrosis, if atenolol had not been withdrawn. This raises the possibil…
