Six species of Paragonimus have been reported in Thailand: P. siamensis in cat, bandicoot and rat; P. bangkokensis in mongoose; P. harinasutai in cat and dog (experiment); P. macrochis in bandicoot and rat; P. westermani in tiger and P. heterotremus in cat, dog and man. It is interesting to note that in 1965 two immature P. heterotremus worms were recovered for the first time in man, namely in subcutaneous swellings in a boy; in 1981 nine mature P. heterotremus worms were expectorated after praziquantel treatment. P. heterotremus has been postulated to be the main cause of human paragonimiasis…

Paragonimiasis, a parasitic infection caused by Paragonimus westermanii, presents with a range of symptoms, including chronic cough, chest pain, and hemoptysis, often mimicking tuberculosis. This case report describes the first documented case of Paragonimus westermanii infection in Bihar, India, presenting with hemoptysis. The patient, a 40-year-old female with a history of consuming smoked and improperly cooked crabs, exhibited eosinophilia and chest radiographic abnormalities. Microscopic examination of the sputum revealed characteristic Paragonimus eggs. Praziquantel treatment led to rapid…

This paper aims to examine the spread of paragonimiasis and the Japanese colonial government's response to it. To consolidate colonial rule, the Japanese colonial government needed medications to cure paragonimiasis. When Dr. Ikeda Masakata invented acid emetine to cure paragonimiasis in Manchuria in 1915, emetine treatment carried the risk of emetine poisoning such as fatigue, inappetence, heart failure, and death. Nonetheless, Japanese authorities forced clinical trials on human patients in colonial Korea during the 1910s and 1920s. The emetine poisoning accident in Yeongheung and Haenam cou…

Paragonimus mexicanus is the causal agent of human paragonimiasis in several countries of the Americas. It is considered to be the only species of the genus present in Mexico, where it is responsible for human infection. Through the investigation of P. mexicanus specimens from several places throughout Mexico, we provide morphological, molecular and geographical evidence that strongly suggests the presence of at least three species from this genus in Mexico. These results raise questions regarding the diagnosis, treatment, prophylaxis and control of human paragonimiasis in Mexico. We also prov…

Paragonimiasis is an infection caused by the lung fluke of the genus Paragonimus. Within the United States, paragonimiasis has been commonly diagnosed in Southeast Asian immigrants infected with the Asian lung fluke Paragonimus westermani. Infections from the North American lung fluke, Paragonimus kellicotti, have been rare, although more infections have been seen in people in the Midwestern United States. A 29-year-old male with a history of pleomorphic xanthoastrocytoma presented with hemoptysis. A CT scan showed a mass in the left upper lung lobe. A biopsy showed eosinophils and parasite eg…

Recent results of mass stool examination for parasitic infections revealed 0.01~0.0001 percent of Paragonimus egg positive rate in Seoul school-children. This survey was carried out to understand the infection status of intermediate hosts and their relations to human paragonimiasis in Seoul. Twelve mountainous streams in the outskirts of Seoul were surveyed. From all streams, Semisulcospira libertina, the snail intermediate host was not detected. From 7 streams 132 crayfishes, Cambaroides similis, the second intermediate host were collected. From them no metacercaria was found. The results ind…

An 11-year-old girl presented with frequent chest pain, fever, and a cough that she had had for more than 13 months, as well as pleural effusion and large pericardial effusion. She was misdiagnosed with tuberculosis and received anti-tuberculosis drugs for 6 months. Within the past year, she also underwent two more thoracotomies and a thoracoscopic partial pericardiectomy. The final diagnosis of pulmonary paragonimiasis was established once it was known that she had eosinophilia, always drank stream water, and tested positive for antibodies against Paragonimus. Since antiparasitic praziquantel…

BACKGROUND: Paragonimiasis, a foodborne zoonotic disease caused by Paragonimus (lung fluke) species, is prevalent mainly in tropical and subtropical regions. It is estimated that 23 million people are infected worldwide. Many reviews have been published in recent years, but very few reviews focused on distribution have been published. Here, we performed a review to map the global distribution of Paragonimus species.
METHODS: We systematically searched Google Scholar, Web of Science, PubMed, ScienceDirect, African Journals Online, the Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Wanfang D…

To determine the cause of death of prisoners of war during the Korean War (1950-1953), death certificates or medical records were analyzed. Out of 7,614 deaths, 5,013 (65.8%) were due to infectious diseases. Although dysentery and tuberculosis were the most common infectious diseases, parasitic diseases had caused 14 deaths: paragonimiasis in 5, malaria in 3, amoebiasis in 2, intestinal parasitosis in 2, ascariasis in 1, and schistosomiasis in 1. These results showed that paragonimiasis, malaria, and amoebiasis were the most fatal parasitic diseases during the early 1950s in the Korean Peninsu…

A 16-year-old boy had eaten Chinese freshwater crabs soaked in liquor in October 2000, and the left pleural effusion was pointed out on chest X-ray films at a regular medical checkup at school in June 2002. Since his father and friends had suffered from Paragonimiasis Westermani and had been treated in January 2001, the patient agreed to immunoserological examination, and Paragonimiasis Westermani was diagnosed. After drainage of pleural effusion, the patient was treated with praziquantel for three days at a daily dosage of 75 mg/kg, but without effect. The patient received drainage of pleural…

Paragonimiasis is a typical food-borne parasitic disease, endemic in most parts of Asia, with sporadic case reports from American and African countries. The major source of infection is undercooked freshwater crab or crayfish, though consumption of wild boar meat is also responsible for the infection in Japan, because wild boar is a paratenic host for Paragonimus westermani. Recently, living juveniles of P. westermani were isolated from muscle of a sika deer, Cervus nippon, in Japan, raising the possibility that venison has been another source of infection. In order to clarify the potential co…

A study was carried out in 1993 in south Cameroon in order to assess the changes in the incidence rate of human paragonimiasis, and to get information on the transmission pattern of Paragonimus sp. Two human cases have been recorded, and one dog was found infected in the Ntem Valley. The results suggest that a decrease of the incidence rate of paragonimiasis occurred in humans and animals. Paragonimus metacercariae were found in three species of freshwater crabs: Sudanonautes africanus, S. aubryi et S. granulatus, the latter being a new host. Prevalence of infection in crabs increased southerl…

Paragonimiasis, caused by the lung fluke Paragonimus, is a major food-borne helminthic disease. Differential diagnosis of paragonimiasis from tuberculosis and other infectious granulomas in the lung is a prerequisite to proper management of patients. Cysteine proteases of Paragonimus westermani (PwCPs) invoke specific antibody responses against patient sera, while antibody capturing activity of different PwCPs has not been comparatively analyzed. In this study, we observed the expressional regulation of 11 species of different PwCPs (PwCP1-11). We expressed recombinant PwCPs and assessed diagn…

Paragonimus westermani, the lung fluke, is known to migrate to the pulmonary tissue of mammalian hosts and causes pathological changes in th … C. The cysteine proteinase was capable of degrading collagen and hemoglobin. Sera of patients with paragonimiasis and mice infected with P. westermani reacted in immunoblots with the partially purified proteinase. This result suggested that the cysteine proteinase of P. westermani may play a role in migration in tissues, and in acquisition of nutrients by paras …
