Othello syndrome in patients with Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: Othello syndrome (OS) is an organic delusional disorder with prevailing jealousy symptoms presumably appearing as side effect of antiparkinsonian therapy. The clinical spectrum of psychiatric symptoms in Parkinson's disease (PD) is very wide, including symptoms of depression and anxiety, hallucinations, delusions, with prevalent paranoid symptoms, agitation, delirium and sleep disorders. At our knowledge, just a few cases of patients with PD and OS were reported till now. METHODS: three neurologists working in a tertiary referral centre were asked to report cases of pathological j

Childhood abuse and schizotypal personality.

INTRODUCTION: There is an increasing body of evidence suggesting an association between early adverse events and an increased prevalence of sub-clinical psychotic phenomena. These 'schizotypal' beliefs and experiences have been associated with a history of trauma, and are also recognised as a risk factor for the transition to psychosis. However, previous studies have not investigated the associations between specific types of adverse event and the distinct dimensions of such phenomena. METHODS: An internet questionnaire produced three groups of participants who had suffered discrete forms of

Evaluation of the psychological status in seasonal allergic rhinitis patients.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the psychological status of Chinese adults with seasonal allergic rhinitis (SAR) in the allergic season, and evaluate the effects of nasal symptoms on their psychological status. METHODS: The Symptom Checklist 90 (SCL-90) or Self-Reporting Inventory was employed to analyze the psychological status of 337 SAR patients. RESULTS: The SCL-90 scores of the SAR patients were statistically higher than those of nonallergic adults in terms of somatization, depression, anxiety, hostility and psychosis. No statistical discrepancies existed in gender or age, the impact of disea

Psychoticism and thought disorder in psychiatric patients.

Schizophrenic patients, whether thought-disordered or not, were found to perform worse than other patients when sorting schematic faces, but not when sorting equivalent abstract material. This information-processing deficit was found to be related to self-rated psychoticism scores as well as to factor scores on the factor of schizophrenia derived from the analysis of psychiatrists' ratings of the patients on a large number of symptoms.

[The risk of heart disease in various psychiatric diseases].

The distribution of some risk factors on different psychiatric diseases in 1726 hospitalized patients were investigated within a prevalence study. To all tested factors there was a contrary behaviour of oligophrenic patients opposite to the group with a schizophrenia, organic and affective psychotics. Hypertension only was found more frequently in non psychotic psychopathia and oligophrenia than in psychosis. Therefore the prevalence of hypertriglyceridemia, hypercholesterinemia, diabetes, specific Ecg-changes, smoking of cigarettes and severe physical inactivity in oligophrenics was less exce

Cotherapy: a review of current literature (with special reference to therapeutic outcome).

This paper presents a review of the current literature on cotherapy with special reference to therapeutic outcome. The review covers the fields of sex therapy, group therapy, and family and marital therapy. It considers both patient variables and cotherapist variables. There are few "Исследование" studies of cotherapy. Most data derive from case illustrations, which, however well detailed, are anecdotal in nature. The most widely addressed effect of cotherapy upon patients is presented in terms of treatment process and not treatment outcome.

The relationship between the court and the doctor on the issue of an inpatient's refusal of psychotropic medication.

New procedures, tailored after such court decisions as Rogers v. Commissioner of the Department of Mental Health, have restricted the doctor's ability to treat psychiatric inpatients with psychotropic medication and have increased the protection of a competent patient's right to refuse. This study investigates how the relationship between the doctor and the court has adapted to these new procedures. All 40 court cases of a maximum security forensic hospital over a two-year period were reviewed. Results suggest that the new procedures have had no dramatic effect upon either the treatment patien

A methodologic approach to crisis therapy.

Resistance to using limited goal, brief psychotherapy often rests upon the mythology that a patient's problems must require a great deal of time for resolution. This paper offers a suitable rationale and methodology for psychotherapists to exercise their enormous capacity to assist patients effecting meaningful change in a brief time period.

Can protective factors moderate the detrimental effects of child maltreatment on personality functioning?

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to examine whether, and if so, to what extent, education and coping strategies may reduce the detrimental effects of childhood maltreatment on personality functioning. METHODS: We assessed dimensional trait-scores of all 10 DSM-IV personality disorders (PDs), childhood maltreatment, education and three coping styles in 511 subjects of the general population of Zurich, Switzerland, using data from the ZInEP Epidemiology Survey. Psychiatric morbidity in parents and sibs of schizophrenics and non-schizophrenics.

The aims of this study were to compare the psychiatric morbidity occurring in the close relatives (N = 332) of patients showing nuclear forms of schizophrenia with that of a control group (N = 201), and to consider the findings in relation to the concept of the schizophrenic "spectrum' and to some genetic theories of schizophrenia. About one third of each group were interviewed by a psychiatrist using defined diagnostic criteria, and information of varying degrees of completeness was obtained about the remainder. After considering possible biases, it was concluded that the "spectrum disorders'

Some aspects of the French contribution during the past ten years to the study and use of injectable long-acting neuroleptics.

Out of five injectable long-acting neuroleptics (LANs) in general use in France, two are french derivatives. LANs in France have been introduced at high dosages, because of the administration of high doses of oral activating neuroleptics at that time. Despite the apparent lack of relationship between dosage and adverse effects, the clinical use of LANs has nowadays moved to lower doses, probably because of the treatment of a greater proportion of less severely-ill outpatients and of patients at an early stage. The "sectorial" organization of community psychiatry in France has contributed to th
