Dedifferentiation occurring in adenoid cystic carcinoma of the tongue.

A 61-year-old man came to the University of Granada School of Dentistry complaining of a mass involving his ventral tongue. Histopathologic examination of the excised specimen showed adenoid cystic carcinoma in which cribriform and tubular patterns were observed, juxtaposed with an undifferentiated carcinoma, large-cell type. No cervical lymph node metastasis was present, and the patient is alive and free of disease 5 years after treatment. To our knowledge, no similar cases have been reported thus far, though other salivary gland malignancies have been described in association with undifferen

Simultaneous bilateral pleomorphic adenomas of the parotid glands with unilateral tyrosine rich crystalloids.

A case of simultaneous, bilateral pleomorphic adenoma of the parotid glands following irradiation to the head and neck for childhood Hodgkin's disease is presented. The tumour on the side given the highest radiation exposure contained so-called tyrosine rich crystalloids (TRCs). Simultaneous salivary gland neoplasms are rare; TRCs are also an unusual finding. Simultaneous pleomorphic adenomas with TRCs confined to one tumour have never been described, and any association between TRCs and irradiation has never been commented on. The precise nature of the TRCs remains obscure. Their unilateral d

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the hypopharynx.

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma is most commonly found in the parotid gland. It rarely occurs in the larynx and hypopharynx. There are only 32 reported cases from these areas. A case of a mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the hypopharynx is presented. Although the initial impression was squamous cell carcinoma, glandular structures were found in metastatic lymph nodes in the neck specimen, and after mucicarmine stains were positive, the final diagnosis was changed to mucoepidermoid carcinoma. This case illustrates the difficulty in diagnosing mucoepidermoid carcinoma, especially in unexpected locations. Di

Unexpected delayed orofacial symptoms induced by facial cosmetic filler: A report of 3 cases.

In addition to well-known side effects such as rash, redness, and bone resorption, unexpected facial complications may occasionally occur several years after certain medical procedures. This report presents rare cases of orofacial symptoms that developed as delayed responses to cosmetic filler injections. Three separate patients presented to the authors' institution with varying severities of orofacial symptoms. These symptoms, initially diagnosed clinically as inflammation or neoplasms of the parotid gland, were later identified through magnetic resonance imaging as diseases potentially assoc

Bilateral tonsillar adenoid cystic carcinoma.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma is a malignant epithelial tumor of the salivary glands. It accounts for less than 1% of all head and neck cancers and less than 10% of all salivary gland neoplasms. It shows slow and indolent growth rate, low probability of regional nodal metastases, high propensity for perineural invasion, multiple and/or delayed recurrences and high incidence of distant metastases. It is the most frequently encountered malignant tumor of the minor salivary glands. The oral cavity and the oropharynx are the most common sites followed by the parotid, submandibular gland, paranasal sinu

Malignant myoepithelioma of the palate: a case report with review of the clinicopathological characteristics.

A malignant myoepithelioma is one of the rarest salivary gland neoplasms which may either arise de novo or develop within a preexisting pleomorphic adenoma or benign myoepithelioma. The parotid gland is the most common primary site and the palate the most common intra-oral site of occurrence. Herein is present a case of a malignant myoepithelioma arising in the hard palate of a 79-year-old woman. The lesion had been examined by biopsy at another hospital, and diagnosed as a poorly differentiated squamous cell carcinoma. The patient underwent a wide local tumor resection. Examination of the res

Epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma of the base of tongue: pathology and management.

Epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma is a rare tumor which makes up about 0.2% of epithelial neoplasms of the salivary glands; parotid gland being the most common primary site of origin. The tumor may also very rarely originate in minor salivary glands of the base of the tongue. Due to rarity of its occurrence, histogenesis and clear cut therapeutic guidelines are not defined. The present report describes the case of a 48 year old male who was diagnosed to have a tubular variant of epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma of the base of tongue, Stage T3 N0 M0 (Stage group III). The patient was treated

Huge Lipoma of Left Parotid Region with Intra-Parotid Extension.

Lipoma is a benign mesenchymal tumor originating from adipose tissue. The occurrence of this tumor in head and neck is less frequent and it rarely involves parotid gland. These are asymptomatic and occur both in the deep and the superficial lobe of the parotid. The most favored age group is from the fifth to sixth decade of life and is 10 times more common in the males. A 66-year-old male patient, with left parotid region lipoma is reported in this article. A fine-needle aspiration biopsy and ultrasonography were performed to establish the preoperative diagnosis and to plan the correct surgica

Cytopathology of salivary gland myoepithelial carcinoma: A study of 13 cases and review of the literature.

INTRODUCTION: Myoepithelial carcinoma (MECA) is an infrequently recognized salivary gland (SG) neoplasm that commonly develops within a preexisting pleomorphic adenoma (MECA ex PA). Fine-needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy reports of this neoplasm are largely restricted to small series and single case reports. METHODS: Our cytopathology files were searched for examples of SG MECA/MECA ex PA having confirmatory histopathologic verification. Conventional FNA biopsy smears were performed, and exfoliative specimens processed using standard techniques. RESULTS: Thirteen cases from 9 patients (M:F = 3.

Histological and immunohistochemical characterization of salivary pleomorphic adenomas in aged rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta).

While pleomorphic adenoma (PA) is the most common salivary neoplasm in human medicine, it appears to be rare in animals and has only recently been reported in a rhesus macaque. We gathered 6 cases of PAs affecting aged rhesus macaques and summarized their gross, histological, and immunohistochemical characteristics. Affected animals ranged from 19 to 32 years, were predominantly male, and the neoplasm was an incidental finding at necropsy. The neoplasms affected the submandibular salivary gland (5/6) and the parotid gland (1/6). Neoplasms were round to ovoid, tan, well-demarcated, and firm. Hi

Epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma of the lung: immunohistochemical and ultrastructural observations and review of the literature.

Epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma is a rare low-grade malignant salivary gland neoplasm that most commonly occurs in the parotid gland but can also arise in minor salivary glands. We report a case of a primary epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma of the lung. The patient is a 55-year-old black woman who presented with increasing shortness of breath and productive cough of at least 3 months duration. A left lower lobe endobronchial lesion was identified radiographically. Surgical resection of the lesion was performed, obtaining a circumscribed, nonencapsulated 3.9 cm tan mass which was attached

Proceedings of the NASHNP Companion Meeting, March 18th, 2018, Vancouver, BC, Canada: Salivary Neuroendocrine Carcinoma-An Overview of a Rare Disease with an Emphasis on Determining Tumor Origin.

Salivary neuroendocrine carcinomas are rare and the overwhelming majority is high-grade. The parotid gland is the most commonly involved site followed by the submandibular gland. Most arise de novo but rare examples occurring as a high-grade transformation of another type of salivary gland neoplasm exist. There is significant morphologic and immunophenotypic overlap with neuroendocrine carcinomas of other sites, especially the skin. Like cutaneous neuroendocrine (or Merkel cell) carcinomas, approximately three-fourths are cytokeratin 20 positive. Cytokeratin 20 positive salivary neuroendocrine

Neoplasms of the salivary glands: analysis of 727 histopathological reports in a single institution.

INTRODUCTION: Salivary gland tumors comprise three to ten percent of all head and neck tumors. The parotid gland is affected most often (64-80%). Malignant tumors constitute a minority, occurring in 15-32% of cases. Pleomorphic adenoma is the most common benign tumor, while mucoepidermoid carcinoma is a malignant neoplasm characterized by the highest incidence. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to conduct a cross-sectional study of all salivary gland tumors diagnosed in a tertiary hospital in the period between 1995 and 2013. METHODS: We reviewed all salivary gland histopathologica

Recurrent sebaceous gland carcinoma of eyelid previously diagnosed as basal cell carcinoma: case report.

Sebaceous gland carcinoma (SGC) of the eyelid is a highly malignant neoplasm that arises from the meibomian glands, glands of Zeis, and sebaceous glands of the skin. The characteristics of this disease are high recurrence rate, significant metastatic potential, and notable mortality rate, which are quite different from basal cell carcinoma (BCC). We report the case of a 37-year-old woman with the history of left lower eyelid BCC (diagnosed 9 years ago), who had left parotid lymph nodes metastases and local recurrence twice. The chief complaint during visit was a left upper eyelid swelling mass

Unilateral parotid agenesis associated with pleomorphic adenoma of ipsilateral accessory parotid gland.

Congenital agenesis of the parotid gland is rare, and its association with accessory parotid tissue is even rarer. We report an unusual case of unilateral agenesis of the left parotid gland associated with pleomorphic adenoma of the left accessory parotid gland. To best of our knowledge, this is only the second such published case in the literature.
