Metastatic tumors to the parotid and submandibular glands--analysis and differential diagnosis of 108 cases.

The distinction between primary salivary gland tumors and metastases of other primary tumors in salivary glands is of special importance for therapy and prognosis. In the files of the Salivary Gland Register, 10,944 cases were collected during 1965 and 1985. Among these cases, there were 108 cases of metastatic tumors to the parotid and submandibular gland. The pathohistological analysis of these tumors revealed the following data: 47 cases (43%) of metastatic tumors were localized in the parenchyma of the parotid gland (37 cases) or of the submandibular gland (10 cases). 61 cases (57%) displa

Neurofibroma at unusual locations: report of two cases in teenage girls.

Solitary neurofibromas are rare occurrence in salivary gland region as well as mons pubis of females. We present two cases of teenage girls with swelling in parotid region and mons pubis. Fine needle aspiration cytology was inconclusive in both cases. They were both managed surgically and a diagnosis of neurofibroma was ascertained histopathologically and also confirmed with S-100 immunohistochemistry. The patients were followed up for a period of six months, however, no recurrence was noted. Though, one patient had a previous history of recurrence. We report these cases in view of their rarit…

Orbital cellulitis with periorbital abscess secondary to methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) sepsis in an immunocompetent neonate.

This article advocates the need for early incision and drainage of periorbital abscesses. We report a case of a 1.5-month-old neonate with orbital cellulitis and periorbital abscess, which had rapidly developed over a period of 3 days. Treatment history revealed methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus sepsis treated with intravenous vancomycin, and incision and drainage of abscesses at multiple sites (left parotid region, upper and lower limbs). A small swelling noted on the left temporal region on discharge from the hospital was treated with oral cotrimoxazole. However, it spread rapidly …

Parapharyngeal space tumor: undifferentiated sarcoma of the parotid gland. A case report.

Parapharyngeal space tumors are extremely uncommon. A 43-year-old man presents with a painless upper neck and face mass, airway obstruction and dysphagia. Physical evaluation revealed a firm, non-mobile mass extending from the right auricular region to the mandibular region of the neck. Radical parotidectomy was scheduled and muscle biopsy was done yielding undifferentiated sarcoma of the parotid gland. Parapharyngeal space tumors represent a problem for physicians in making an accurate diagnosis and determining management options available. Extensive knowledge of the anatomical boundaries of

Ultrasound of Kimura's disease.

Kimura's disease is found almost exclusively in Orientals. It commonly affects the head and neck region and mainly involves the major salivary glands and regional lymph nodes. Its appearances can be mistaken for malignant disease. We present two patients with Kimura's disease. In one patient the disease involved the soft tissues and parotid gland, and in another the submandibular gland. Both patients demonstrated lymphadenopathy in the submandibular, submental areas and upper cervical region. Both patients had ultrasound examination of the salivary glands and neck. One of the patients also had

Prognostic Factors of Pretreatment Magnetic Resonance Imaging for Predicting Clinical Outcome in Patients With Parotid Gland Cancer.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to assess the utility of pretreatment magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in predicting the clinical outcomes of patients with parotid gland cancer. METHODS: A total of 43 patients with histopathologically confirmed primary parotid gland cancer, who underwent pretreatment MRI, were enrolled in this study. All images were retrospectively reviewed, and MRI features were evaluated as possible prognostic factors influencing the progression-free survival (PFS) using the Kaplan-Meier method and Cox proportional hazards regression model. Cox regression analysis was used to est

Bilateral acoustic neurofibromatosis with bilateral multicentric facial schwannomas.

A case report of a 20-year-old female with bilateral acoustic neurofibromatosis (NF-2) and bilateral facial schwannomas is presented. Multiple segmental schwannomas were found with clinically intact tissue between each tumoral enlargement in the right parotid region. Translocation (2;8) (p2.4:q2.1) was detected in this patient, and has not been reported in a schwannoma until now. The patient's family would not allow any major surgery to be performed.

Low-dose radiation therapy for benign salivary disorders.

Two patients, one with a persistent salivary fistula after surgery for a skin tumor overlying the parotid region, and the other with a ranula recurrent after surgery, were treated with low-dose irradiation. Both problems resolved after a total dose of less than 30 Gy, and neither patient experienced xerostomia. In selected patients, low-dose radiation therapy offers a solution to persistent salivary flow refractory to surgical management.

Locational and Clinical Varieties of Warthin Tumor: Two Rare Case Presentations.

Warthin tumor (WT) is the second most common benign tumor of the parotid gland with male predominance and is seen in the elderly population in the left mandibular and cervical regions. Extraparotid WT rarely presents as a mass in the right cervical region in middle-aged adults. Here, we present two extraordinary cases of WT seen in middle age, both in the right cervical region. The first is a 50-year-old man with an asymptomatic neck mass, and the second is a 60-year-old woman with a fast-growing mass with enhancement in positron emission tomography-computed tomography (PET-CT) with suspicions

Typical nodal calcifications in the maxillofacial region: a case report.

Multiple nodal calcifications in the maxillofacial region are very rare. This case report described a 49-year-old female patient diagnosed with calcified lymph nodes due to chronic inflammation of the lymphatic nodes, including the parotid lymphatic nodes, the posterior auricular lymphatic nodes and submandibular lymphatic nodes in the right maxillofacial region. In clinical practice, we conducted ultrasonography, three-dimensional reconstruction of CT and sialography make a preliminary diagnosis. Then we took surgery, while removing the calcified blocks within the lymphatic node and cleaning

Post-traumatic sialoceles and mucoceles of the salivary glands.

Three cases of post-traumatic sialocele involving the parotid region and one case of post-traumatic mucocele involving the submandibular region are presented. Computed tomography (CT) with contrast showed enhancing borders after a few weeks. Cases earlier than 2 weeks from occurrence showed no enhancement because of the absence of a well-developed capsule. Patients who had the disease longer showed better enhancement of the periphery with contrast because of capsule development. By CT scanning alone it is difficult to differentiated these lesions from other cystic lesions of the face and neck,…

First branchial cleft anomaly: a report of case.

A rare case of first branchial cleft anomaly in a 21-year-old female is described. A fistulous tract was located near the angle of the mandible and anterior to the sternocleidmastoid muscle, extending upwards under the facial nerve and opening into the external auditory canal. The tract was completely removed and the facial nerve was preserved. Histopathologic examination revealed that the tract was composed of keratinizing squamous cell epithelium with adnexal structures and cartilage.

Surgical excision of first cleft branchial fistulae.

Three patients were studied who had fistulae in the neck derived from the first branchial cleft. Evidence is presented to show that although these fistulae usually pass superficial to the facial nerve they may also pass deep to one or both main divisions of the nerve. We conclude that a formal superficial conservative parotidectomy with full exposure of the facial nerve is the safest operative course when excising these fistulae.

Assessment of 18F-DCFPyL PSMA PET/CT and PET/MR quantitative parameters for reference standard organs: Inter-reader, inter-modality, and inter-patient variability.

Prostate specific membrane antigen (PSMA)-based radiotracers have shown promise for prostate cancer assessment. Evaluation of quantitative variability and establishment of reference standards are important for optimal clinical and research utility. This work evaluates the variability of PSMA-based [18F]DCFPyL (PyL) PET quantitative reference standards. Consecutive eligible patients with biochemically recurrent prostate cancer were recruited for study participation from August 2016-October 2017. After PyL tracer injection, whole body PET/CT (wbPET/CT) was obtained with subsequent whole body PET

Multiple Simultaneous Rare Distant Metastases as the Initial Presentation of Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma: A Case Report.

Papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) commonly metastasizes to regional lymph nodes. However, they infrequently cause rare distant metastases (RDMs), with the exclusion of lungs and bone metastases. RDMs are seldom identified prior to a primary thyroid cancer diagnosis. Therefore, cases initially presenting with synchronously multiple RDMs from PTC are extremely infrequent. This is a rare case of a 48-year-old man with initial diaphragm, pancreatic, and liver tumors from PTC. Following resection of the tumors, an ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration (US-FNA) cytology of a mass in the thyroid's

Management of vascular malformations of the parotid area.

OBJECTIVES: To describe our experience in the management of vascular malformations of the parotid area. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a retrospective study. Among 614 parotidectomy performed between 1998 and 2008 at our institution, 10 cases (1.6%) of vascular malformations have been identified. Clinical features and management of these patients were analyzed. RESULTS: Clinical presentation was usually related to that of a benign, slow-growing and asymptomatic tumor. There was a marked female predominance (90%). In any case, the diagnosis of vascular malformation could be obtained with cer

Identifying Regional Viscoelastic Properties of the Superficial Muscular Aponeurotic System.

BACKGROUND: Suspension of the superficial muscular aponeurotic system (SMAS) is generally believed to be necessary in facelift surgery. Although many techniques have been suggested, all rely on the viscoelastic properties of the SMAS. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to determine the viscoelastic properties of bursting strength, stress relaxation, and creep in the lateral, mid-cheek, and medial regions of the SMAS. METHODS: The viscoelastic properties of the SMAS were determined in 12 cadaveric hemifaces. Lateral SMAS was classified as the SMAS overlying the parotid gland; mid-cheek SMA

Intraparotid Osteolipoma: Treatment Option and Surgical View.

Osteolipoma is a benign neoplasm originating from the mesenchymal fat tissue cells and characterized by the presence of bone formation. In the head and neck district osteolipoma has been described as parapharyngeal, nasopharinx, submandibular gland, eyelid, floor of the mouth, and skull base lesion. Only 1 case of osteolipoma was reported as a neoplasm of the parotid region. Considering the rarity of the osteolipoma, our purpose was to describe the first case of totally intraparotid gland localization of osteolipoma and summarize and review the actual literature concerning the presence of this…

An unusual finding of the auriculotemporal nerve: possible risk factor during preauricular skin incisions.

The auriculotemporal nerve (ATN) is a branch of the mandibular nerve and has been implicated for some migraines and its role in Frey's syndrome is well known. An adult cadaver was found to have a duplicated ATN. The anterior trunk ascended as the superficial temporal artery and gave off the branches to the temporomandibular joint, parotid gland, external acoustic meatus and temporal region and communicated with a posterior trunk of the ATN. The posterior trunk ascended via the subcutaneous tissues 1 mm anterior to the auricle and gave off the branches to the anterior auricular region, temporal

Carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma originating from ectopic salivary gland in the neck region: case report.

Carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma (CEPA) is the malignant salivary gland tumor originating from primary (de novo) or recurrent pleomorphic adenoma. Although parotid gland is the most common site, it can also be seen in submandibular gland or minor salivary glands. It can be seen rarely in head and neck region, such as oral cavity, trachea, nasal cavity and lacrimal gland. Although pleomorphic adenoma cases originating from ectopic salivary gland tissue in the neck region are present in the English literature, there is no published pleomorphic adenoma ex carcinoma case.
