Peripheral crowding is invariant under different luminance levels.

Peripheral crowding is the difficulty in recognizing objects in cluttered peripheral vision, affecting tasks like reading, visual search, and driving. The luminance of the environment also plays a significant role in these tasks. However, the potential interaction between crowding and luminance is still not clear. This study examined peripheral crowding (10 deg) by measuring its magnitude and critical spacing across a wide range of luminance levels, spanning from scotopic to photopic conditions. Ten participants binocularly identified the orientation of a target presented alone or flanked by f

Lexical and sublexical cortical tuning for print revealed by Steady-State Visual Evoked Potentials (SSVEPs) in early readers.

There are multiple levels of processing relevant to reading that vary in their visual, sublexical, and lexical orthographic processing demands. Segregating distinct cortical sources for each of these levels has been challenging in EEG studies of early readers. To address this challenge, we applied recent advances in analyzing high-density EEG using Steady-State Visual Evoked Potentials (SSVEPs) via data-driven Reliable Components Analysis (RCA) in a group of early readers spanning from kindergarten to second grade. Three controlled stimulus contrasts-familiar words versus unfamiliar pseudofont

Decoding the difference between explicit and implicit body expression representation in high level visual, prefrontal and inferior parietal cortex.

Recent studies provide an increasing understanding of how visual objects categories like faces or bodies are represented in the brain and also raised the question whether a category based or more dynamic network inspired models are more powerful. Two important and so far sidestepped issues in this debate are, first, how major category attributes like the emotional expression directly influence category representation and second, whether category and attribute representation are sensitive to task demands. This study investigated the impact of a crucial category attribute like emotional expressi

Nonspecific Visuospatial Imagery as a Novel Mental Task for Online EEG-Based BCI Control.

Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) can provide a means of communication to individuals with severe motor disorders, such as those presenting as locked-in. Many BCI paradigms rely on motor neural pathways, which are often impaired in these individuals. However, recent findings suggest that visuospatial function may remain intact. This study aimed to determine whether visuospatial imagery, a previously unexplored task, could be used to signify intent in an online electroencephalography (EEG)-based BCI. Eighteen typically developed participants imagined checkerboard arrow stimuli in four quadrants

Cathodal transcranial direct current stimulation of the extrastriate visual cortex modulates implicit anti-fat bias in male, but not female, participants.

Explicit negative attitudes toward obese individuals are well documented and seem to modulate the activity of perceptual areas, such as the Extrastriate Body Area (EBA) in the lateral occipito-temporal cortex, which is critical for body-shape perception. Nevertheless, it is still unclear whether EBA serves a role in implicit weight-stereotypical bias, thus reflecting stereotypical trait attribution on the basis of perceptual cues. Here, we used an Implicit Association Test (IAT) to investigate whether applying transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) over bilateral extrastriate visual co

Visuospatial working memory for locations, colours, and binding in typically developing children and in children with dyslexia and non-verbal learning disability.

This study examined forward and backward recall of locations and colours and the binding of locations and colours, comparing typically developing children - aged between 8 and 10 years - with two different groups of children of the same age with learning disabilities (dyslexia in one group, non-verbal learning disability [NLD] in the other). Results showed that groups with learning disabilities had different visuospatial working memory problems and that children with NLD had particular difficulties in the backward recall of locations. The differences between the groups disappeared, however, wh

Extra-large letter spacing improves reading in dyslexia.

Although the causes of dyslexia are still debated, all researchers agree that the main challenge is to find ways that allow a child with dyslexia to read more words in less time, because reading more is undisputedly the most efficient intervention for dyslexia. Sophisticated training programs exist, but they typically target the component skills of reading, such as phonological awareness. After the component skills have improved, the main challenge remains (that is, reading deficits must be treated by reading more--a vicious circle for a dyslexic child). Here, we show that a simple manipulatio

Language status and hemispheric involvement in reading: evidence from trilingual Arabic speakers tested in Arabic, Hebrew, and English.

This study explores the effects of language status on hemispheric involvement in lexical decision. The authors looked at the responses of native Arabic speakers in Arabic (L1 for reading) and in two second languages (L2): Hebrew, which is similar to L1 in morphological structure, and English, which is very different from L1. Two groups of Arabic speakers performed lateralized lexical decision tasks in the three languages, using unilateral presentations and bilateral presentations. These paradigms allowed us to infer both hemispheric specialization and interhemispheric communication in the thre

Multivariate patterns in object-selective cortex dissociate perceptual and physical shape similarity.

Prior research has identified the lateral occipital complex (LOC) as a critical cortical region for the representation of object shape in humans. However, little is known about the nature of the representations contained in the LOC and their relationship to the perceptual experience of shape. We used human functional MRI to measure the physical, behavioral, and neural similarity between pairs of novel shapes to ask whether the representations of shape contained in subregions of the LOC more closely reflect the physical stimuli themselves, or the perceptual experience of those stimuli. Perceptu

Distinct and convergent visual processing of high and low spatial frequency information in faces.

We tested for differential brain response to distinct spatial frequency (SF) components in faces. During a functional magnetic resonance imaging experiment, participants were presented with "hybrid" faces containing superimposed low and high SF information from different identities. We used a repetition paradigm where faces at either SF range were independently repeated or changed across consecutive trials. In addition, we manipulated which SF band was attended. Our results suggest that repetition and attention affected partly overlapping occipitotemporal regions but did not interact. Changes

Object recognition is mediated by extraretinal information.

Many previous studies of object recognition have found view-dependent recognition performance when view changes are produced by rotating objects relative to a stationary viewing position. However, the assumption that an object rotation is equivalent to an observer viewpoint change ignores the potential contribution of extraretinal information that accompanies observer movement. In four experiments, we investigated the role of extraretinal information on real-world object recognition. As in previous studies focusing on the recognition of spatial layouts across view changes, observers performed

Hemispheric asymmetry as a function of handedness: perception of facial affect stimuli.

Hemispheric asymmetry in 14 left- and 14 right-handed persons shown tachistoscopically presented emotional stimuli to left and right visual fields was examined using a forced-choice, reaction-time paradigm in which subjects were asked to identify positive and negative faces. Neutral faces were included within the two-alternative forced-choice paradigm. Reaction time and response-bias measures were recorded. Analysis indicated differential lateralization for left-handed and right-handed subjects with respect to neutral affective stimuli. While right-handed subjects' perceptions of neutral stimu

The role of the lateral suprasylvian visual cortex of the cat in object-background interactions: permanent deficits following lesions.

The contribution of the lateral suprasylvian cortex to pattern recognition was studied by behavioural detection experiments in combination with bilateral lesions of different parts of the lateral suprasylvian areas (LSA) and area 7 in seven cats. In a two-alternatives forced choice task the cats had to discriminate simple outline patterns which were additively superimposed on a structured visual background made up of broadband Gaussian noise. For various stimulus conditions (moving or stationary patterns and/or background) the detection probability (PD) of the cats was measured as a function o

Results of visual information processing tests in elderly people with presbycusis.

In a group of 21 elderly subjects with mild to moderate hearing loss of presbycusis type, a series of tests of visual information processing was performed. Cortical-evoked potentials were recorded in response to flash and to checker-board pattern stimulation. Further, five speech reading tests were administered. The results obtained in this group of elderly subjects were compared to those of a group of young normal-hearing subjects and those of a group of young subjects with congenital hearing impairment. The visual-evoked potentials showed significantly smaller N1P2-amplitude in elderly subje

Abstract letter identities and developmental dyslexia.

Four experiments, first used by Bigsby (1988a), were presented to three groups of competent readers of varying reading ages and to nine developmentally dyslexic children. As in the initial study, competent reader data were analysed using group statistical analysis techniques together with some discussion of individual experimental effects and error levels. Competent reader data were also analysed, as were data from the dyslexic subjects, at a cognitive functional level and individual processing descriptions were obtained. Results from the group analysis confirmed earlier findings that nominal

The visual evoked potential in acute primary angle closure glaucoma.

Visual evoked potentials (VEPs) were elicited from 29 patients who had experienced a previous attack of acute primary angle closure glaucoma. The VEPs were shown to be abnormal in at least one of the measures (latency, amplitude, contrast threshold, or slope) in 72.4% of affected eyes, whereas only 41.4% indicated obvious optic nerve damage. It is notable that 48.1% of fellow eyes with no (known) history of acute pressure rise also showed some form of VEP abnormality. The possible pathophysiological mechanisms operating in both affected and fellow eyes are discussed. It is concluded that, desp

Contrast sensitivity measurements in acute and resolved optic neuritis.

We measured contrast sensitivity by means of Arden grating plates in 41 eyes with acute optic neuritis and in 51 eyes with resolved optic neuritis. The scores were abnormal in 93% of eyes in the acute phase and 78% in the resolved phase irrespective of visual acuity. Even when acuity improved to 6/7.5 or better with resolution of the neuritis, 67% of eyes still showed abnormal contrast sensitivity. Since Snellen acuity represents just one point at the high spatial frequency end of the contrast sensitivity function, a patient in whom acuity improves to 6/6 with resolution of optic neuritis may

Visual evoked potentials in spinocerebellar degenerations.

Pattern reversal visual evoked potentials were studied in 21 patients with spinocerebellar ataxias among whom 6 had Friedreich's ataxia, 10 had hereditary spastic ataxia and 5 had spinocerebellar degeneration with slow eye movements (olivopontocerebellar degeneration). The VEP abnormalities found in 4 cases of Friedreich's ataxia and one with spinocerebellar degeneration with slow eye movements, consisted of, bilaterally absent VEP in 3 patients and bilaterally abnormal responses with asymmetry in two. All the patients with spastic ataxia had normal VEP latencies. The N 70 - P 100 amplitudes,

Orientation-specific visual evoked potential deficits in multiple sclerosis.

Checkerboard pattern reversal visual evoked potentials (VEPs) have proved useful in the confirmation of optic nerve disease in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). Recently evidence of orientation-specific loss in contrast sensitivity and the presence of orientation-specific visual evoked potential (VEP) deficits in MS patients has been obtained using sinusoidal gratings as stimuli. This study reports the presence of orientation-specific VEP delay in MS using the conventional checkerboard pattern presented in two orientations: normally oriented (check condition) or diagonally oriented (diamo
