A comparison of deltopectoral versus Judet approach for glenoid exposure.

BACKGROUND: Open reduction-internal fixation via an anterior or posterior approach is a widely used method for treating displaced glenoid fractures. This study aimed to identify the exposure range of the glenoid rim by these 2 approaches (deltopectoral and Judet approaches) and provide reference data for the choice of surgical approach. METHODS: Twelve cadaveric shoulders were dissected. Both deltopectoral and Judet approaches were performed on each shoulder to mark the glenoid fracture. In addition, the shoulder was disarticulated to record the exposure range of the glenoid rim. RESULTS: Fo

Effects of flight speed upon muscle activity in hummingbirds.

Hummingbirds have the smallest body size and highest wingbeat frequencies of all flying vertebrates, so they represent one endpoint for evaluating the effects of body size on sustained muscle function and flight performance. Other bird species vary neuromuscular recruitment and contractile behavior to accomplish flight over a wide range of speeds, typically exhibiting a U-shaped curve with maxima at the slowest and fastest flight speeds. To test whether the high wingbeat frequencies and aerodynamically active upstroke of hummingbirds lead to different patterns, we flew rufous hummingbirds (Sel

Physical rehabilitation after myocutaneous flaps.

The neck, shoulder, and upper trunk serve as donor sites for commonly used flaps in head and neck reconstruction. In order to prevent permanent functional disabilities, a physical therapy program was organized. The anatomy, physiology, and kinesiology of the shoulder muscles that are commonly used in myocutaneous flaps are reviewed. Their functional deficit and compensation are described. Exercise protocols for each group of muscles were developed. Prevention of postoperative "frozen shoulder" and the avoidance of tension and torsion of the transposed muscle pedicle are important during the im

Gas chromatographic analysis of coyote and magpie tissues for residues of compound 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate).

Tissues of coyotes and magpies administered known dosages of 1080 were analyzed for residues by an analytical method specifying gas chromatography and electron capture detection. The repeatability of the method was determined for the replicate analyses of coyote muscle tissue samples aged under different storage conditions. The average coefficient of variation (CV) was 6% for quadruplicate determinations of 1080 in fresh tissues, 12-14% for samples stored at - 10 degrees C for 30-60 days, and 24% for samples aged for 7 days at ambient temperatures. The larger CV value obtained for stored sampl

Mobius syndrome and Poland anomaly: case report and review of the literature.

A 6-year-old boy had the combination of Mobius Syndrome and the Poland anomaly. Although rare, this association is repeatedly encountered. The absence of the pectoral muscle in the Poland anomaly supports the theory that in both conditions the muscular and skeletal abnormalities are due to a common fetal mesodermal defect.

Altered Cocontraction Patterns of Humeral Head Depressors in Patients with Subacromial Pain Syndrome: A Cross-sectional Electromyography Analysis.

BACKGROUND: In approximately 29% to 34% of all patients with subacromial pain syndrome (SAPS) there is no anatomic explanation for symptoms, and behavioral aspects and/or central pain mechanisms may play a more important role than previously assumed. A possible behavioral explanation for pain in patients with SAPS is insufficient active depression of the humerus during abduction by the adductor muscles. Although the adductor muscles, specifically the teres major, have the most important contribution to depression of the humerus during abduction, these muscles have not been well studied in pati

Damage protective effects conferred by low-intensity eccentric contractions on arm, leg and trunk muscles.

PURPOSE: Low-intensity eccentric contractions with a load corresponding to 10% of maximal voluntary isometric contraction strength (10% EC) attenuate muscle damage in a subsequent bout of higher-intensity eccentric contractions performed within 2 weeks for the elbow flexors, knee flexors and knee extensors. However, it is not known whether this strategy could be applied to other muscles. This study investigated whether 10% EC would confer damage protective effect on high-intensity eccentric contractions (80% EC) for nine different muscle groups. METHODS: Untrained young men were placed to an

Spaghetti meat and gaping in broilers: emerging myopathies challenging poultry meat quality and processing.

The global poultry industry has experienced rapid growth, driven by consumer demand for affordable, high-quality protein. However, this progress has been accompanied by the emergence of growth-related myopathies, notably Spaghetti Meat (SM) and the more recently described Gaping, which compromise meat quality, yield, and marketability. SM, first reported in 2015, is characterized by the detachment and weakening of Pectoralis major fibers, resulting in a stringy, mushy texture of the meat. Gaping, affecting the Pectoralis minor, presents as separations between fiber bundles and tendon tears. In

Protein co-expression network analysis explores biological mechanisms associated with meat quality variability in broilers affected by breast myopathies: A focus on wooden breast.

Growth-related myopathies affecting fast-growing broilers still represent a challenge for the poultry industry, and the need for comprehensive and additional knowledge useful to mitigate the occurrence of these myopathies persists. This study aimed at exploring the association between the proteome profiles and the meat quality traits (i.e., weight, morphometric parameters, pHu, color, and compression force) of broiler breast fillets affected by the white striping (WS), wooden breast (WB), and spaghetti meat (SM), as well as the normal ones (NB), by applying the WGCNA approach (N = 12). Prediction of raw meat texture and myopathic severity of broiler breast meat with the wooden breast condition by hyperspectral imaging.

1. This research explored the potential of hyperspectral imaging (HSI) to predict meat texture and the wooden breast (WB) condition in raw chicken breast fillets, categorised as normal, moderate WB and severe WB. The Meullenet-Owens Razor Shear (MORS) measurement was employed to characterise raw meat texture traits, including force, energy and peak count.2. Significant differences in MORS force, energy and peak count were observed between normal and severe WB fillets. However, no significant differences in these traits were found between normal and moderate WB fillets.3. Partial least square r

Optimization of total tongue functional reconstruction with the sushi roll technique and its application in pectoralis major myocutaneous flaps.

A protuberant shape and sufficient volume are the most important parameters for total tongue reconstruction. The conventional pectoralis major myocutaneous (PMMC) flap undergoes collapse due to atrophy of the denervated muscle. In a new technique, this flap was rolled up like sushi to reshape the neotongue. This study explored the feasibility and effect of the 'sushi roll' technique for precise total functional reconstruction of the tongue using a PMMC flap. Thirty patients scheduled for total glossectomy and PMMC flap reconstruction were recruited. The sushi roll technique was performed in 15

Effects of genetic selection for fast growth on the development of wooden breast myopathy in broilers.

1. This study investigated the physiological and molecular mechanisms leading to wooden breast (WB) by comparing growth parameters, oxygen consumption rate, thyroid hormone and gene expression patterns in fast- versus slow-growing broiler lines (Cobb500 and L1986, respectively).2. WB was observed in Cobb500 broilers only and was first diagnosed on d 21 post-hatch. Compared to the slow-growing L1986, Cobb500 showed a significantly higher growth rate, relative breast weight, breast thickness, meat pH and water-retention capacity (drip loss). Correspondingly, there was significantly lower relativ

An alternative method for reconstructing anterior segmental mandibulectomy defects with a plate and pectoral major muscle flap.

BACKGROUND: Reconstruction of anterior segmental mandibulectomy still remains a challenge. Osteocutaneous free flap remains the ideal choice of reconstruction because it restores cosmesis and function. The use of other locoregional flaps compromises cosmesis and function. Here, we have introduced a unique technique of reconstruction with lingual cortex mandibular plate as an alternate choice for free flap. METHOD: Six patients aged 12-62 years underwent oncological resection for oral cancer which involved the anterior segment of the mandible. Following resection, they underwent lingual cortex

Characteristics of broiler chicken breast myopathies (spaghetti meat, woody breast, white striping) in Ontario, Canada.

Spaghetti meat (SM), woody breast (WB), and white striping (WS) are myopathies affecting breast muscle of broiler chickens, and are characterized by a loss of myofibers and an increase in fibrous tissue. The conditions develop in intensive broiler chicken production systems, and cause poor meat process-ability and negative customer perception leading to monetary losses. The objectives of the present study were to describe the physical and histological characteristics of breast myopathies from commercial broiler chicken flocks in Ontario, Canada, and to assess the associations between the sever

Rupture of the Proximal Long Head of Biceps Tendon Presenting as a Pectoralis Major Tear: A Case Report.

CASE: We report a case of a 56-year-old man who sustained a ruptured long head of biceps tendon (LHBT) that presented with symptoms typical of a pectoralis major rupture. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed an isolated LHBT tear. Intraoperatively, the biceps tendon had an unusually thick distal segment entrapped under the insertion of the pectoralis major. Surgery led to an excellent outcome. CONCLUSION: A ruptured LHBT with an associated large distal segment producing a mass effect on the pectoralis major can mimic a pectoralis major rupture and may ultimately require surgery to alleviate sy

The diagnostic performance of MRI signs to distinguish Pectoralis major tendon avulsions from Myotendinous injuries.

BACKGROUND: Management of pectoralis major (PM) injuries is largely determined by the anatomic location of the injury, with tendon avulsions from the humerus requiring surgery while myotendinous (MT) injuries are typically managed non-operatively. Because physical examination cannot reliably make this distinction, MRI is often used for staging. However, correct classification can also be difficult with MRI where there is extensive soft tissue edema and distorted anatomy. OBJECTIVE: To determine the diagnostic performance of primary and secondary MRI signs of PM injury for distinguishing tendo

Vertical Submental Island Flap for Head and Neck Reconstruction.

Regional flaps remain a cornerstone of head and neck reconstruction. Among their many functions, they serve a vital role in salvage surgery and for those in whom medical comorbidities preclude the use of microvascular free flaps. Recent research has also examined their potential benefit in value-based healthcare metrics such as operative time, cost, intensive care unit care, and length of stay as compared to free-flap reconstruction. The submental island flap is one such entity that is well described and validated to provide predictable, oncologically sound coverage for defects of the lower th

Pectoralis-II Myofascial Block and Analgesia in Breast Cancer Surgery: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Thoracic paravertebral block is the preferred regional anesthetic technique for breast cancer surgery, but concerns over its invasiveness and risks have prompted search for alternatives. Pectoralis-II block is a promising analgesic technique and potential alternative to paravertebral block, but evidence of its absolute and relative effectiveness versus systemic analgesia (Control) and paravertebral block, respectively, is conflicting. This meta-analysis evaluates the analgesic effectiveness of Pectoralis-II versus Control and paravertebral block for breast cancer surgery. METHODS:

Poland syndrome: description of an atypical variant.

Poland syndrome comprises a unilateral absence of the large pectoral muscle, ipsilateral symbrachydactyly, and occasionally other malformations of the anterior chest wall and breast. The condition is more frequent among males, and usually occurs on the right hemithorax in the unilateral form. The syndrome is believed to be caused by a genetic disorder that reduces the embryonal circulation in the interior chest artery: the stronger the interaction, the more severe the pathology. This article analyzes an unusual pathologic case in which the 17-year-old patient lacked the large pectoral muscle o
