The association between self-oriented perfectionism and suicidal ideation in adolescents: The buffering role of social connectedness.

This study examined and compared the moderating roles of connectedness to parents, peers, friends, and school in the association between self-oriented perfectionism and suicidal ideation among adolescents in a non-clinical, community sample. Data on suicidal ideation, self-oriented perfectionism, and connectedness in these four domains were collected using self-report instruments from adolescents with no psychiatric history. The results showed that although connectedness to parents, friends, peers, and school was generally associated with lower suicidal ideation, it was only connectedness to f

Situational correlates of adolescents' alcohol outcome expectancies in daily life.

OBJECTIVE: Alcohol outcome expectancies (AOEs), formed in early childhood, are correlates of future alcohol consumption and related problems. Social-cognitive theories suggest that AOEs become activated in specific social and physical location contexts. Prior research, primarily among university students, has aimed to identify situational influences on specific AOEs, as indexed by reports of AOEs in hypothetical drinking scenarios. This study aims to deepen understanding of AOE activation in real-world settings by examining social and physical situational correlates of AOE activation among ado

Assessing youth's internal and external attributions to negative peer interactions and victimization-development of the Causal Attributions for Peer Experiences (CAPE) scale.

Many youth experience negative behavior from their peers, which can have lasting consequences for their social functioning and well-being. One mechanism through which negative interactions affect youth is causal attributions, that is, the interpretations that they make for why a negative interaction occurred. We present the newly developed CAPE (Causal Attributions for Peer Experiences) scale, which assesses youth's stable internal, unstable internal, stable external, and unstable external attributions for peers' mean behavior. Self-blame (characterological and behavioral) and hostile intent a

Facilitators, barriers, and strategies for the implementation of peer-led tuberculosis active case finding among people who use drugs in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Globally, tuberculosis (TB) is the leading cause of death from a single infectious agent. In 2023, an estimated 2.7 million cases of TB were undiagnosed or unreported. To address missing cases, the World Health Organization recommends systematic screening for TB. This is synonymous to active case finding (ACF) and involves provider-initiated screening and testing for TB. Despite the high incidence and prevalence of TB among people who use drugs (PWUD), there is a significant gap in data, on their perspectives, regarding the implementation of TB ACF services. This study aimed to exp

Impact of veteran-led peer mentorship on posttraumatic stress disorder.

Peer mentorship shows promise as a strategy to support veteran mental health. A community-academic partnership involving a veteran-led nonprofit organization and institutions of higher education evaluated a collaboratively developed peer mentor intervention. We assessed posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), postdeployment experiences, social functioning, and psychological strengths at baseline, midpoint, and 12-week discharge using the PTSD Checklist for DSM-5 (PCL-5), Deployment Risk and Resilience Inventory-2, Social Adaptation Self-evaluation Scale, and Values in Action Survey. Can you be a peer if you don't share the same health or social conditions? A qualitative study on peer integration in a primary care setting.

BACKGROUND: Peer support has been extensively studied in specific areas of community-based primary care such as mental health, substance use, HIV, homelessness, and Indigenous health. These programs are often built on the assumption that peers must share similar social identities or lived experiences of disease to be effective. However, it remains unclear how peers can be integrated in general primary care setting that serves people with a diversity of health conditions and social backgrounds. METHODS: A participatory qualitative study was conducted between 2020 and 2022 to explore the feasib

Targeting Peer Contagion Dynamics in Children with ADHD: Effects from a Two-Site Randomized Controlled Trial.

OBJECTIVE: Parental Friendship Coaching (PFC) teaches parents to coach their children in friendship skills. This paper examines whether PFC fosters positive peer contagion processes (i.e. dyadic mutuality) and reduces negative peer contagion processes (i.e. coercive joining) within the friendships of children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). METHOD: Participants were 134 families of children with ADHD and peer problems (age 6-11 years; 69% male; 72% white) at two Canadian sites, randomized to PFC or CARE (an active comparison intervention). Children were observed in the l

The effect of peers' theory of mind on children's own theory of mind development: A longitudinal study in middle childhood and early adolescence.

While there is considerable evidence that children's early ability to understand others' mental states, called "theory of mind," is shaped by family experiences, it remains unclear whether children's social interactions at school influence theory of mind (ToM) beyond early childhood. We tested whether the mean level ("quantity") and/or the diversity ("variety") of peers' ToM influenced children's own ToM. We also examined whether peer effects on ToM were independent of possible confounding variables (e.g., verbal ability, social isolation) and comparable across children with different initial

How receiving welfare assistance could be linked to children's bullying victimization: Exploring the potential pathways.

The study proposes and tests the pathways from receiving welfare assistance to children's bullying victimization. Specifically, the study examines whether children's difficulty making friends and school disconnection mediate the association between welfare assistance receipt to children's bullying victimization. The 2019 National Survey of Children's Health dataset was used, and the sample consisted of 12,230 caregivers of adolescents, aged 12-17 years. A path model was utilized to explore the proposed pathways. Findings suggest that welfare assistance receipt was not significantly associated

Perceptions and Utilization of Online Peer Support Among Informal Dementia Caregivers: Survey Study.

BACKGROUND: Informal dementia caregivers are those who care for a person living with dementia and do not receive payment (eg, family members, friends, or other unpaid caregivers). These informal caregivers are subject to substantial mental, physical, and financial burdens. Online communities enable these caregivers to exchange caregiving strategies and communicate experiences with other caregivers whom they generally do not know in real life. Research has demonstrated the benefits of peer support in online communities, but this research is limited, focusing merely on caregivers who are already

Developmental trajectories of students' beliefs about social success: Differences between students with and without a middle school transition.

INTRODUCTION: Attaining social success is a significant concern during early adolescence. The characteristics that youth believe will bring social success are known to change over time and vary across contexts, especially over the transition to middle school. METHODS: The analytic sample included 614 students (52% girls, 48% boys; 53% Black, 47% White) from the Midwestern United States. At yearly intervals during grades 6-8, participants completed self-report surveys assessing their endorsement of five characteristics (sincerity, academic responsibility, dominance, disingenuity, athleticism/a

Proximity within adolescent peer networks predicts neural similarity during affective experience.

Individuals befriend others who are similar to them. One important source of similarity in relationships is similarity in felt emotion. In the present study, we used novel methods to assess whether greater similarity in the multivoxel brain representation of affective stimuli was associated with adolescents' proximity within real-world school-based social networks. We examined dyad-level neural similarity within a set of brain regions associated with the representation of affect including the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC), amygdala, insula, and temporal pole. Greater proximity was ass

Peer bullying tendencies of school children: The role of demographic, health-related, and school-related factors.

BACKGROUND: Peer bullying is widely observed across the world and continues to grow. Peer-bullying children and children exposed to peer bullying often display a fall in academic achievements, an increase in psychiatric problems, and problematic relationships with their parents. OBJECTIVE: This study was conducted to identify the effects of demographic, health-related, and school-related characteristics in school-age children, including their grade, academic success, and status of liking their school, on their peer-bullying tendencies. DESIGN AND METHODS: This study was carried out as a cros

Network analysis links adolescent depression with childhood, peer, and family risk environment factors.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent mental health is influenced by various adverse environmental conditions. However, it remains unclear how these factors jointly affect adolescent depression. This study aimed to use network analysis to assess the associations between different environmental factors and depressive symptoms in adolescents and to identify key pathways between them. METHODS: This study included 610 adolescents with depression from inpatient and outpatient units recruited between March 2020 and November 2021. The mean age was 14.86 ± 1.96, with no significant difference between males (n = 155

Interpersonal Mechanisms Between Child Maltreatment Timing and Young Adult Internalizing and Externalizing Symptomatology.

OBJECTIVE: Children who experience maltreatment are prone to exhibit interpersonal deficits and lack secure attachment, which can lead to internalizing and externalizing symptomatology. This study investigated timing and chronicity of maltreatment and its impacts on psychopathology outcomes in young adulthood. Two interpersonal mediators were examined: problems with peers and childhood attachment security. METHOD: Children with and without maltreatment exposure were recruited to take part in a 1-week research summer camp (N = 697; mean [SD] age = 11.29 [0.97] years; 71.3% Black or African Ame

Subjective Reactions to First Coitus in Relation to Participant Sex, Partner Age, and Context in a German Nationally Representative Sample of Adolescents and Young Adults.

Analysis of a Finnish nationally representative student sample found that subjective reactions to first intercourse (mostly heterosexual; usually in adolescence) were highly positive for boys and mostly positive for girls, whether involved with peers or adults (Rind, 2022). The present study examined the generality of these findings by examining subjective reactions to first coitus (heterosexual intercourse) in a German nationally representative sample of young people (data collected in 2014). Most first coitus was postpubertal. Males reacted mostly positively and uncommonly negatively in simi

A social network analysis of perpetrators of child maltreatment reported by youth in foster care.

OBJECTIVE: Prior research on child maltreatment has focused on distinct features of maltreatment (type, severity, chronicity) important for youth outcomes, yet perpetrators of child maltreatment reported by youth have gone largely unstudied. The present study examines connections between perpetrators, the total number and type of perpetrators reported, and the frequency at which each type of perpetrator was reported across 24 relationship types to provide a foundation for future research seeking to provide comprehensive measurement of perpetrator profiles. METHODS: Data from 503 youth in fost

Adolescent girls' intrapersonal and interpersonal parasympathetic regulation during peer support is moderated by trait and state co-rumination.

Effective emotion regulation (ER) is integral to adolescents' mental well-being and socioemotional development. During adolescence, peer interactions have an increasingly salient influence on the development of effective ER, but not all supportive peer interactions support adaptive ER. Co-rumination reflects the tendency to seek ER support by engaging with peers in negatively focused discussion of ongoing problems. We examined associations between co-rumination (state and trait) with measures of individual's autonomic (i.e., respiratory sinus arrhythmia, RSA) and affective regulation (self-rep

Peer victimization, environmental and psychological distress, and academic performance among children in China: A serial mediation model moderated by migrant status.

BACKGROUND: Despite robust evidence indicating the adverse academic, psychological, and school-related impacts of being victimized, the ways in which peer victimization indirectly affects children's academic performance by psychological and environmental distress remain poorly understood, especially in China. OBJECTIVE: We sought to investigate how peer victimization negatively impacts academic performance via the serial mediation effects of environmental and psychological distress among migrant versus non-migrant children in China.
