BACKGROUND & AIMS: Interleukin-1 beta (IL-1beta) polymorphisms are associated with increased risk of gastric cancer in whites. This study aimed to examine effects of these polymorphisms on gastric acid secretion, atrophic gastritis, and risk of peptic ulcer in Japan.
METHODS: We determined IL-1B-511/-31 and IL-1RN genotypes and measured gastric juice pH, serum pepsinogen (PG) I and II levels, and gastritis and atrophy scores in Helicobacter pylori-positive patients with gastritis only, gastric ulcers, or duodenal ulcers (DUs), and H. pylori-negative controls.

Upper endoscopy screening in an asymptomatic 56-year-old man showed a small, yellowish elevated lesion with a central depression on the posterior wall in the gastric cardia. Biopsy specimens from this lesion were suspicious of carcinoid tumor. We suspected this lesion to be a sporadic gastric carcinoid tumor with a diameter of 5 mm, limited to the mucosal layer. PURPOSE: We evaluate the status of the prostatic central zone in patients with unilateral absence of the seminal vesicles and vas deferens.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The entire bases of the prostate specimens from 3 patients with unilateral absence of the seminal vesicles and vas deferens who underwent radical prostatectomy for prostatic adenocarcinoma were evaluated on hemotoxylin and eosin stained sections for the distribution of the central zone. Immunohistochemical stains for pepsinogen II were performed on areas thought to be central zone and on corresponding contralateral sections.

A case of an unusual variant of fundic gland polyp (FGP) composed of chief cell hyperplasia with structural and nuclear atypia in an 87-year-old woman is presented.
