Auditory localization by subjects with unilateral tinnitus.

Tinnitus is associated with changes in neural activity. How such alterations impact the localization ability of subjects with tinnitus remains largely unexplored. In this study, subjects with self-reported unilateral tinnitus were compared to subjects with matching hearing loss at high frequencies and to normal-hearing subjects in horizontal and vertical plane localization tasks. Subjects were asked to localize a pink noise source either alone or over background noise. Results showed some degree of difference between subjects with tinnitus and subjects with normal hearing in horizontal plane l

Feedforward and feedback control in apraxia of speech: effects of noise masking on vowel production.

PURPOSE: This study was designed to test two hypotheses about apraxia of speech (AOS) derived from the Directions Into Velocities of Articulators (DIVA) model (Guenther et al., 2006): the feedforward system deficit hypothesis and the feedback system deficit hypothesis. METHOD: The authors used noise masking to minimize auditory feedback during speech. Six speakers with AOS and aphasia, 4 with aphasia without AOS, and 2 groups of speakers without impairment (younger and older adults) participated. Acoustic measures of vowel contrast, variability, and duration were analyzed. RESULTS: Younger,

Psychoacoustic analyses of cochlear mechanisms in tinnitus patients with normal auditory thresholds.

OBJECTIVE: Tinnitus is often related to auditory dysfunction. We hypothesised that, among individuals with normal auditory thresholds, the mechanism of frequency selectivity might differ between subjects with and without tinnitus. Our objective was to identify any differences between normal-hearing individuals with tinnitus and those without in terms of psychophysical tuning curves (PTCs) and threshold-equalising noise (TEN) test results. DESIGN: We determined PTCs and performed the TEN test. STUDY SAMPLE: We evaluated 57 individuals, 16 with bilateral tinnitus (tinnitus-group) and 41 withou

Dissociable mechanisms supporting awareness: the P300 and gamma in a linguistic attentional blink task.

As demonstrated by the attentional blink (AB) phenomenon, awareness for attended stimuli is governed by sharp capacity limits. We used a linguistic AB task to investigate the neural mechanisms that underlie failures of awareness, examining both event-related potentials and oscillatory brain activity to correctly reported and missed second targets (T2s) presented after a correctly reported first target (T1) in a rapid visual stream of distractors. Correctly reported targets occurring at a short lag (250 ms) after T1-within the classic AB period-elicited enhanced late gamma activity relative to

Predicted effects of sensorineural hearing loss on across-fiber envelope coding in the auditory nerve.

Cross-channel envelope correlations are hypothesized to influence speech intelligibility, particularly in adverse conditions. Acoustic analyses suggest speech envelope correlations differ for syllabic and phonemic ranges of modulation frequency. The influence of cochlear filtering was examined here by predicting cross-channel envelope correlations in different speech modulation ranges for normal and impaired auditory-nerve (AN) responses. Neural cross-correlation coefficients quantified across-fiber envelope coding in syllabic (0-5 Hz), phonemic (5-64 Hz), and periodicity (64-300 Hz) modulatio

Sex differences in face processing: Are women less lateralized and faster than men?

The aim of this study was to determine the influence of sex on hemispheric asymmetry and cooperation in a face recognition task. We used a masked priming paradigm in which the prime stimulus was centrally presented; it could be a bisymmetric face or a hemi-face in which facial information was presented in the left or the right visual field and projected to the right or the left hemisphere. The target stimulus was always a bisymmetric face presented centrally. Faces were selected from Minear and Park's (2004) database. Fifty-two right-handed students (26 men, 26 women) participated in this expe

Processing interaural cues in sound segregation by young and middle-aged brains.

BACKGROUND: When listening to one speaker while another conversation is occurring simultaneously, we separate the competing sounds by processing physical cues such as common onset time, intensity, frequency harmonicity, and spatial location of the sound sources. Spatial location is determined in large part by differences in arrival of a sound at one ear versus the other ear, otherwise known as interaural time difference (ITD) or interaural phase difference (IPD). There is ample anecdotal evidence that middle-aged adults experience greater difficulty listening to speech in noise, even when thei

Audiovisual integration and lipreading abilities of older adults with normal and impaired hearing.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the current study was to examine how age-related hearing impairment affects lipreading and auditory-visual integration. The working hypothesis for the investigation was that presbycusic hearing loss would increase reliance on visual speech information, resulting in better lipreading and auditory-visual integration in older persons who have hearing impairment, compared with older persons who have normal hearing. DESIGN: This study compared the performance of 53 adults with normal hearing (above age 65) and 24 adults with mild-to-moderate hearing impairment (above age

Estimates of basilar-membrane nonlinearity effects on masking of tones and speech.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this experiment was to assess the contribution of cochlear nonlinearities to speech recognition in noise for individuals with normal hearing and a range of quiet thresholds. For signals close to the characteristic frequency (CF) of a place on the basilar membrane, the normal growth of response of the basilar membrane is linear at lower signal levels and compressed at medium to higher signal levels. In contrast, at moderate to high CFs, the basilar membrane responds more linearly to stimuli at frequencies well below the CF regardless of input level. Thus, for moderate-leve

Lack of diagnostic value of high-pass noise masking of auditory brainstem responses in Ménière's disease.

INTRODUCTION: Different electrophysiologic tests were developed to ascertain or detect endolymphatic hydrops (ELH). Recently, Cochlear Hydrops Analysis Masking Procedure (CHAMP), a new auditory brainstem response (ABR) technique, proved to be able to separate normal controls from definite Ménière's disease (MD) with 100% sensitivity and 100% specificity. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the applicability and diagnostic value of CHAMP in a series of MD and non-MD patients with otovestibular complaints. STUDY DESIGN: An observational retrospective study. Auditory abilities of speakers who persisted, or recovered, from stuttering.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to see whether participants who persist in their stutter have poorer sensitivity in a backward masking task compared to those participants who recover from their stutter. DESIGN: The auditory sensitivity of 30 children who stutter was tested on absolute threshold, simultaneous masking, backward masking with a broadband and with a notched noise masker. The participants had been seen and diagnosed as stuttering at least 1 year before their 12th birthday. The participants were assessed again at age 12 plus to establish whether their stutter had persisted

A diagnostic test for Ménière's Disease and Cochlear Hydrops: impaired high-pass noise masking of auditory brainstem responses.

HYPOTHESIS: Endolymphatic hydrops in patients diagnosed with Ménière's disease causes changes in the response properties of the basilar membrane that lead to impaired high-pass noise masking of auditory brainstem responses to clicks. BACKGROUND: Ménière's disease is defined as the idiopathic syndrome of endolymphatic (cochlear) hydrops, which is an abnormal increase in the volume of cochlear fluid (endolymph) in the inner ear. Accurate detection and diagnosis are important but difficult because of the lack of sufficiently sensitive tests. METHODS: Two populations were compared: (1) 38 non-Mé

Neural correlates and mechanisms of spatial release from masking: single-unit and population responses in the inferior colliculus.

Spatial release from masking (SRM), a factor in listening in noisy environments, is the improvement in auditory signal detection obtained when a signal is separated in space from a masker. To study the neural mechanisms of SRM, we recorded from single units in the inferior colliculus (IC) of barbiturate-anesthetized cats, focusing on low-frequency neurons sensitive to interaural time differences. The stimulus was a broadband chirp train with a 40-Hz repetition rate in continuous broadband noise, and the unit responses were measured for several signal and masker (virtual) locations. Masked thre

Sensorineural hearing loss alters recovery from short-term adaptation in the C57BL/6 mouse.

Several strains of laboratory mouse (Mus musculus) have a pattern of hearing loss which resembles that found in humans. The C57BL/6 strain of mouse has a genetic defect that results in degeneration of the organ of Corti, originating in the basal, high-frequency region and then proceeding apically over time. The end result is a severe-to-profound sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) by 14 months of age. In contrast, auditory function of the CBA strain remains normal through its early life span then slowly declines later in life, much like that typified by human presbycusis. The purpose of the pres

Routine acoustic voice analysis: time to think again?

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This paper reviews recent evidence regarding the validity and reliability of acoustic voice analysis in routine clinical assessments. The current role of jitter and shimmer, the most-used indices, and how their clinical application might be improved are evaluated. RECENT FINDINGS: Even though the evidence is limited, acoustic analysis is widely used to assist differential diagnosis, documentation and evaluation of treatment for clinical voice disorders. Recent clinical data have not shown that jitter and shimmer are absolute or independent indices of voice pathology or perc

Dynamic neural oscillations underpin audiovisual gain from visual lip cues in speech noise.

Speech noise substantially impairs speech perception, whereas congruent lip movements provide effective visual support when auditory input is degraded. Using natural continuous Mandarin sentences, the present study recorded behavioral and electroencephalographic (EEG) data under speech noise conditions with different signal-to-noise ratios (SNR) to examine the dynamic neural mechanisms by which visual lip information facilitates speech perception. The results showed that speech noise significantly reduced speech recognition accuracy and weakened δ band activity and functional connectivity in t

Recognition of accented and unaccented speech in different maskers by younger and older listeners.

This investigation examined the effect of accent of target talkers and background speech maskers on listeners' ability to use cues to separate speech from noise. Differences in accent may create a disparity in the relative timing between signal and background, and such timing cues may be used to separate the target talker from the background speech masker. However, the use of this cue could be reduced for older listeners with temporal processing deficits, especially those with hearing loss. Participants were younger and older listeners with normal hearing and older listeners with hearing loss.

Neural correlates of affective priming effects based on masked facial emotion: an fMRI study.

Affective priming refers to the phenomenon that subliminal presentation of facial emotion biases subsequent evaluation of a neutral object in the direction of the prime. The aim of the present study was to specify the neural correlates of evaluative shifts elicited by facial emotion shown below the threshold of conscious perception. We tested the hypotheses whether the amygdala is involved in negative priming, whereas the nucleus accumbens participates in positive priming. In addition, exploratory whole brain correlation analyses were conducted. During 3T fMRI scanning, pictures of sad, happy,
