Time trend analysis of perinatal mortality, stillbirth, and early neonatal mortality of multiple pregnancies for each gestational week from the year 2000 to 2019: A population-based study in Japan.

Multiple pregnancies pose a high risk of morbidity and mortality in both mothers and infants; thus, obtaining reliable information based on a large population is essential to improve management. We used the maternal and child health statistics, which are published annually, from the database of the Ministry of Health, Labor, and Welfare. The data obtained were aggregated in 5-year intervals, and we used them to analyze the proportion of the number of births for each week of pregnancy to the total of each singleton and multiple pregnancy. For perinatal health indicators (perinatal mortality, st…

Slowing fetal growth velocity from the mid-trimester may signal increased risks of perinatal morbidity and mortality: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Undetected fetal growth restriction is a major risk factor for stillbirth. Detecting small babies is a cornerstone of obstetric … our institution; hence, all pregnancies were referred for at least one scan. Primary outcomes were perinatal mortality (stillbirth or neonatal death) and a composite of adverse perinatal outcomes. Fetal growth velocity was calculated between first and last scans, standardized as exact estimated fetal weight (EFW) z-score change per week. RESULTS: Among 24,395 pregn …

Perinatal mortality and its association with antenatal care visit, maternal tetanus toxoid immunization and partograph utilization in Ethiopia: a meta-analysis.

Despite remarkable progress in the reduction of under-five mortality; perinatal mortality is the major public health problem in Africa. In Ethiopia, the study findings on perinatal mortality and its predictors were inconsistent. Therefore, this systematic review and meta-analysis estimated the pooled perinatal mortality, and its association with antenatal care visit, maternal tetanus toxoid immunization, and partograph monitoring. International databases like PubMed, SCOPUS, Google Scholar and Science Direct were systematically searched. I squared statistics was used to determine the levels of…

The association between preterm labour, perinatal mortality and infant death (during the first year) in Bishop Lavis, Cape Town, South Africa.

BACKGROUND: We present further analyses from the Safe Passage Study, where the effect of alcohol exposure during pregnancy on sudden infant … he neonatal death rates were 4.3 and 2.7/1 000 live births, respectively. For these pregnancies the perinatal mortality rates were 20.0/1 000 (≥22 weeks) and 12.5/1 000 (≥28 weeks), respectively. Only 15.9% of stillbirths occurred during labour (in 15.9% of cases it was uncertain whether death had occurred during labour). In the majority of cases (68.2%) fetal death …

Small for gestational age preterm infants and relationship of abnormal umbilical artery Doppler blood flow to perinatal mortality and neurodevelopmental outcomes.

AIM: To determine the outcomes of preterm small for gestational age (SGA) infants with abnormal umbilical artery (UA) Doppler studies. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study of SGA singleton infants delivered between 24 and 32 weeks gestation at King Edward Memorial Hospital, Perth, who had UA Doppler studies performed within seven days of birth. Main outcomes assessed were perinatal mortality and morbidity, and neurodevelopmental outcomes at >or= 1 year of age. Outcomes were compared by normality of UA blood flow. RESULTS: There were 119 infants in the study: 49 (41%) had normal UA Doppler s…

Beyond cut-offs: gestational age-specific perinatal mortality across the birthweight-for-gestational-age continuum-a population-based cross-sectional study.

UNLABELLED: Abnormal fetal growth is linked to increased perinatal morbidity and mortality. Birthweight percentiles-commonly the 10th and 90th-define small (SGA) and large for gestational age (LGA) infants. Although birthweight charts are periodically updated, cut-offs for SGA and LGA remain fixed, despite changes in population characteristics and evolving clinical management. We aimed to characterize how perinatal mortality varies continuously across birthweight-for-gestational-age (BW-for-GA) and gestational age (GA), describing GA-specific mortality gradients rather than defining new cut-of…

Causes and contributory factors of maternal mortality: evidence from maternal and perinatal death surveillance and response in Ogun state, Southwest Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Nigeria still ranks second globally in the number of maternal deaths. Most maternal death reviews in Nigeria are isolated research based reports from a single health facility. This study determined causes and contributory factors of maternal mortality in Ogun statefollowing a periodic State-widematernal and perinatal deaths surveillance and response (MPDSR) review. METHODS: We carried out a retrospective analysis of cases of maternal deaths notified (n = 77) and reviewed (n = 45) in health facilities in Ogun State from 2015 to 2016selected using total sampling method. Implications of the first cesarean: perinatal and future reproductive health and subsequent cesareans, placentation issues, uterine rupture risk, morbidity, and mortality.

Rates of cesarean delivery have substantially increased worldwide during the past 30 years. Indeed, almost one-third of deliveries in the United States are cesareans. Most cesareans are safe, and major complications are uncommon. However, there is a "concealed" downside to cesarean deliveries. There are rare but life-threatening morbidities that may occur, which are often overlooked because most cesareans go well. In addition, subsequent pregnancies are fraught with an increased risk of both maternal and fetal complications. The worst of these are associated with placental problems such as pre

Predictors of maternal and perinatal mortality among pregnant women with preeclampsia and eclampsia at Garissa County Referral Hospital: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Preeclampsia and eclampsia are severe complications of pregnancy that significantly contribute to maternal and fetal mortality. A comprehensive understanding of the predictors of these conditions is essential for developing effective interventions. Despite preeclampsia and eclampsia being among the leading contributors to maternal and fetal mortality in resource-limited areas in Kenya, especially the arid and semi-arid regions such as Garissa, limited studies have specifically examined the predictors of maternal and perinatal mortality among women with preeclampsia and eclampsia. T…

The utility of delivery ward register data for determining the causes of perinatal mortality in one specialized and one general hospital in south Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Globally, the burden of perinatal mortality is high. Reliable measures of perinatal mortality are necessary for planning and assessing prenatal, obstetric, and newborn care services. However, accurate record-keeping is often a major challenge in low resource settings. In this study we aimed to assess the utility of delivery ward register data, captured at birth by healthcare providers, to determine causes of perinatal mortality in one specialized and one general hospital in south Ethiopia. METHODS: Three years (2014-2016) of delivery register for 13,236 births were reviewed from J…

Application of the international classification of diseases-perinatal mortality (ICD-PM) system to stillbirths: A single center experience in a middle income country.

OBJECTIVE: The present study is intended to investigate the causes of stillbirth and its relationship with maternal conditions using the International Classification of Diseases-Perinatal Mortality (ICD-PM) system. MATERIAL AND METHODS: All early and late fetal deaths between 2015 and 2020 were analyzed. Time of death, fetal causes, and the maternal conditions involved were identified using the ICD-PM classification system. RESULTS: During the study period, out of 74,102 births a total of 475 stillbirths were recorded (6.4 per 1000 births), of which 83.6% of the cases were antepartum and 11.…

A single-center observational study on congenital diaphragmatic hernia: Outcome, predictors of mortality and experience from a tertiary perinatal center in Singapore.

BACKGROUND: Congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) is a common birth defect associated with significant mortality and morbidity. There is limited outcome data on CDH in the Southeast Asian region. Rapid accessibility to our CDH Perinatal Center, as a consequence of the small geographic size of our country and efficient land transportation system, has largely eliminated deaths of live outborn babies prior arrival at our center. We selected a study period when extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) support was not available at our institution. The data will therefore be relevant in developing

Magnesium sulphate and perinatal mortality and morbidity in very-low-birthweight infants born between 24 and 32 weeks of gestation in Japan.

OBJECTIVE: Maternal exposure to magnesium sulphate has a neuroprotective effect in premature infants. This study aimed to examine this neuroprotective effect and the dose-response relationship in very-low-birthweight infants born between 24 and 32 weeks of gestation. STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective cohort study compared the rates of mortality and brain damage between three groups: no magnesium sulphate, low-dose (<50g) magnesium sulphate and high-dose (≥50g) magnesium sulphate. RESULTS: Japanese maternal and neonatal databases were linked using six key parameters from 2003 to 2007. Of 298,514
