The history of intussusception in Newcastle in a quarter of a century is presented by analysis of patient presentation and the results of management. The figures for the early years are incomplete, retrieved from one hospital in the area. For the years 1976-1988, all cases were managed by two paediatric surgeons who kept individual disease indices. To test the hypothesis that there is an abnormal serum insulin response to a carbohydrate load in thyrotoxic hypokalaemic periodic paralysis (THPP), 18 men with THPP and 15 with uncomplicated thyrotoxicosis were studied during an oral glucose tolerance test. The diagnosis of malrotation is easily made in the neonatal period, but is often delayed in older patients. Among 82 patients treated for malrotation in this institution, 45 patients presented with symptoms related to their malrotation, seven were diagnosed at exploration for concomitant intrinsic duodenal obstruction, and 30 patients had malrotations discovered as incidental findings at laparotomy or autopsy. Thyrotoxic periodic paralysis is an uncommon neuromuscular disorder frequently associated with severe hypokalemia. We describe a patient with hypophosphatemia occurring in the setting of hypokalemic thyrotoxic periodic paralysis, an association reported only once previously. 3,258 randomly selected adult household residents of Edmonton were interviewed by trained lay interviewers using the Diagnostic Interview Schedule (DIS).
