Adverse effects of arecoline and nicotine on human periodontal ligament fibroblasts in vitro.

BACKGROUND, AIMS: The habit of betel nut chewing impinges on the daily lives of approximately 200 million people. Betel quid chewers have a … iols (p < 0.05), respectively. This suggests that arecoline itself might augment the destruction of periodontium associated with betel nut use. Furthermore, the addition of nicotine acted with a synergistic effect on the arecoline-induced cytotoxicity. At a concentration of 60 microg/ml, arecoline suppressed the growth of PDLF by about 33% and 5 mM nicotine en …

Thick Vs Thin Periodontal Phenotype: The Impact on Oral Health Outcomes.

Periodontal phenotype refers to the physical expression of the periodontium, including thickness of the gingiva and alveolar bone, as determined by genetic and environmental factors. Gingival recession is significantly more prevalent in individuals with a thin periodontal phenotype, which suggests that a thick periodontal phenotype is more resistant to gingival recession than a thin one. Most patients with untreated gingival recession have progression, even with good oral hygiene. Periodontal phenotype also has an important role in the outcomes of periodontitis, restorative, implant, and ortho…

DetSegDiff: A joint periodontal landmark detection and segmentation in intraoral ultrasound using edge-enhanced diffusion-based network.

Individuals with malocclusion require an orthodontic diagnosis and treatment plan based on the severity of their condition. Assessing and monitoring changes in periodontal structures before, during, and after orthodontic procedures is crucial, and intraoral ultrasound (US) imaging has been shown a promising diagnostic tool in imaging periodontium. However, accurately delineating and analyzing periodontal structures in US videos is a challenging task for clinicians, as it is time-consuming and subject to interpretation errors. This paper introduces DetSegDiff, an edge-enhanced diffusion-based n…

Mitochondrial Dysfunction in Periodontitis and Associated Systemic Diseases: Implications for Pathomechanisms and Therapeutic Strategies.

Periodontitis is a chronic infectious disorder damaging periodontal tissues, including the gingiva, periodontal ligament, cementum, and alveolar bone. It arises from the complex interplay between pathogenic oral bacteria and host immune response. Contrary to the previous view of "energy factories", mitochondria have recently been recognized as semi-autonomous organelles that fine-tune cell survival, death, metabolism, and other functions. Under physiological conditions, periodontal tissue cells participate in dynamic processes, including differentiation, mineralization, and regeneration. These

Identification of a new genetic variant (G231N, E232T, N235D) of peptidylarginine deiminase from P. gingivalis in advanced periodontitis.

Chronic periodontitis (CP), an inflammatory disease of periodontal tissues driven by a dysbiotic subgingival bacterial biofilm, is also associated with several systemic diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Porphyromonas gingivalis, one of the bacterial species implicated in CP as a keystone pathogen produces peptidyl arginine deiminase (PPAD) that citrullinates C-terminal arginine residues in proteins and peptides. Autoimmunity to citrullinated epitopes is crucial in RA, hence PPAD activity is considered a possible mechanistic link between CP and RA. Here we determined the PPAD enzym

[Research progress in association of neurological disorders and periodontal diseases].

Periodontal diseases are inflammatory diseases caused by oral pathogens around the periodontal supporting tissues, leading to systemic and chronic inflammatory conditions. The continuous chronic systemic inflammation may be a trigger of neuroinflammation, which is the prominent feature of a variety of neurological disorders. It implies that there may be a causal link between periodontal diseases and neurological disorders. This article presents epidemiological and biological evidences that periodontal diseases can induce or exacerbate neurological disorders, including Alzheimer's disease, Park

Illegal drugs and periodontal conditions.

In recent years, the practice of dentistry and periodontology has become complicated by several risk factors, including the treatment of an increasing number of patients with substance use disorder. This review presents an update in the current literature of the impact of illegal drug use on periodontal conditions and their possible effect as risk factors or indicators. The main illegal drugs that may have an impact on periodontal health and conditions are described, including their effect, medical manifestations, risks, and the overall effect on oral health and on the periodontium. Where avai…

IL-1B(3954) polymorphism and red complex bacteria increase IL-1β (GCF) levels in periodontitis.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to compare IL-1β levels in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) from healthy and periodontitis sites of IL-1B(3954)-Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP) positive and IL-1B(3954)-SNP negative periodontitis subjects in association with their bacterial profiles. BACKGROUND: Susceptibility to periodontitis has been associated with several risk factors, including allelic variants at multiple gene loci. Variations in the IL-1 gene cluster have been linked with increased risk for periodontitis. IL-1B(3954)-SNP has been previously associated with increased levels of IL

Role of occlusion in periodontal disease.

This article deals with establishing a new link between trauma from occlusion and periodontal pockets based on the know-how and background gradually developed. To provide a better understanding to the reader, a historical perspective is firstly presented. The main features on the controversy of the role played by trauma from occlusion on the physiologic behavior of the periodontal structures are shown, together with how deviations from the normal characteristics of this relationship itself affect the integrity of the periodontal tissues when or associated with dental biofilm in the presence or

The paradox of painless periodontal disease.

Periodontal diseases, primarily gingivitis and periodontitis, are characterised by progressive inflammation and tissue destruction. However, they are unusual in that they are not also accompanied by the pain commonly seen in other inflammatory conditions. This suggests that interactions between periodontal bacteria and host cells create a unique environment in which the pro-algesic effects of inflammatory mediators and factors released during tissue damage are directly or indirectly inhibited. In this review, we summarise the evidence that periodontal disease is characterised by an accumulatio

Periodontal space: a major route to bone involvement in oral cancer.

Oral cancers are presumed to involve mandible or maxilla by direct invasion and destruction of periosteum and underlying bone. In countries where there is a high incidence of oral cancers, most patients have poor dental hygiene and chronic periodontitis. We hypothesize that in such situations spread through the periodontal space is the major route to bone. We suggest that micro and macroscopic examination of the root surface can identify this and that this has to be done for proper 'T' grouping of tumours.

Attachment loss in primary molars.

The view that primary teeth are only rarely affected by periodontitis has been generally adopted. The aim of the present work was to measure attachment loss and to establish its prevalence, severity and distribution in stained, extracted primary molars. The material consisted of 4 groups of 50 teeth each: first and second upper and first and second lower primary molars. Teeth were selected to fulfil 2 criteria: (1) a carious cavity not extending beyond the cemento-enamel junction and involving only 1 of the proximal surfaces, the other 3 surfaces being sound; (2) root resorption, if present, n

The incidence of transient bacteremia during periodontal dressing change.

Twenty patients undergoing treatment for periodontal disease and not receiving antibiotics, volunteered to donate blood for culture studies to determine the incidence of transient bateremia during the dressing change and suture removal 1 week after periodontal surgery. Each patient contributed 20 ml of blood prior to the dressing change and an additional 20 ml during suture removal. The samples were cultured both aerobically and anaerobically. Bacteria were demonstrated in five out of 20 postoperative cultures (25%). This incidence approached statistical significance at the 0.05 level using Ch
