In 13 patients with advanced peritonitis (postoperative suture line breakdown in eight and spontaneous intestinal perforation in five) treatment consisted of widely opening the peritoneal cavity and exposing the contaminated viscera. Eight of the patients underwent diverting enterostomy, and the remaining five underwent an additional drainage procedure to evacuate a residual collection. Clinical improvements were observed in all except one who died without favorable response. Some of the clinical manifestations indicative of organ failures subsided in nine of the ten patients. In five patients…

Clinical data (110 observations over 106 cases) and experiments on animals proved the inexpediency of the peritonization of non-pertonized surfaces in children both in "pure" peritoneum and under the condition of a pronounced inflammation. Renouncement of peritonization of peritoneal defects has favoured the decrease of the incidence rate of the recurrence of ileum and the improvement of late results of the treatment. The authors believed that the peritonization is needed only when defects of the intestinal wall reach the submucous level and as this takes place a pronounced bleeding, which can

Peritoneal dialysis (PD)-associated peritonitis is a leading cause of technique failure. We aimed to develop and internally validate a Cox regression‑based nomogram for predicting peritonitis‑free survival in incident PD patients. This single-center retrospective cohort study included 372 patients who underwent peritoneal dialysis between June 2018 and December 2024, with follow-up through December 2025. LASSO‑Cox regression was used to select predictors from 23 candidate variables. A nomogram was constructed to predict 6‑, 12‑, and 24‑month peritonitis‑free survival. Model performance was ass…

IMPORTANCE: Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is a common dialysis modality before kidney transplant. Peritonitis, a major complication of PD, may be associated with adverse posttransplant outcomes.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between history of peritonitis and outcomes among patients undergoing PD followed by kidney transplant.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This is a retrospective cohort study of the Australia and New Zealand Dialysis and Transplant Registry. Patients who initiated PD as first kidney replacement therapy and underwent kidney transplant during 2006 to 2024 were included…

Peritoneal dialysis (PD) can be used as renal replacement therapy when chronic kidney disease (CKD) progresses to end-stage renal disease. However, peritoneal fibrosis (PF) is a major cause of PD failure. Studies have demonstrated that PD fluid contains a significantly larger numbers of macrophages compared with the healthy individuals. During PD, macrophages can secrete cytokines to keep peritoneal tissue in sustained low-grade inflammation, and participate in the regulation of fibrosis-related signaling pathways, such as NF-κB, TGF-β/Smad, IL4/STAT6, and PI3K/AKT. A series of basic pathologi

Peritonitis is the major complication of peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients. Staphylococcus is the leading causative organism of PD-related peritonitis. However, there were more reports of unusual organisms causing peritonitis. Clinical features, management, and outcome of peritonitis from unusual organisms are important information. We reported herein a 72-year-old female patient who presented with fever, abdominal pain, and cloudy dialysate for 3 days. Upon admission, ceftazidime and vancomycin were given intraperitoneally. A preliminary report of blood and PD fluid culture showed the presenc…

BACKGROUND: Peritonitis is the leading cause of peritoneal dialysis (PD) discontinuation. However, few data concern risk factors of peritonitis development and catheter removal caused by treatment failure in pediatric patients.
METHODS: This single-center, retrospective study analyzed data from pediatric patients who underwent chronic PD between March 2002 and June 2022. The incidence rates of peritonitis by the person-year method were calculated, and they were stratified by patient age groups. Risk factors for peritonitis development and catheter removal were also analyzed by multivariate an…

Aspergillus peritonitis is uncommon, but it is associated with high mortality and morbidity in patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis (PD). We report two cases of Aspergillus tamarii peritonitis that were initially misidentified as A. flavus by the conventional culture method. Nucleotide sequences of internal transcribed spacer regions of the ribosomal DNA gene as A. tamarii correctly identified the isolate. Despite early catheter removal and an appropriate antifunal agent, both patients had dismal outcomes. Nucleic acid sequencing offers an additional tool for better diagnosing the species w…

Endometriosis is defined as a disorder in which the glands and stroma of the endometrium grow and shed periodically outside the uterine cavity. Highly prevalent in women of reproductive age, the most common clinical manifestations are chronic pelvic pain and infertility. The pathogenesis of endometriosis may be multifactorial, including factors of anatomy, immunity, inflammation, hormones (estrogen), oxidative stress, genetics, epigenetics, and environment. There are generally three types of endometriotic disease, namely peritoneal, ovarian, and deep infiltration. For the same patient, there m

BACKGROUND: The effects of training practices on outcomes of patients receiving peritoneal dialysis (PD) are poorly understood and there is a lack of evidence informing best training practices. This prospective cohort study aims to describe and compare international PD training practices and their association with peritonitis.
METHODS: Adult patients on PD <3 months participating in the Peritoneal Dialysis Outcomes and Practice Patterns Study (PDOPPS) were included. Training characteristics (including duration, location, nurse affiliation, modality, training of family members, use of individu…

Eggerthia catenaformis is a Gram-positive bacilli and an anaerobic and non-spore-forming bacterium, which rarely causes infections in humans. We present a case of peritonitis caused by E. catenaformis in a peritoneal dialysis patient. The isolate was identified as E. catenaformis with the MALDI-TOF MS method as in other cases in the literature. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case of peritonitis caused by E. catenaformis in a human host.

Peritoneal metastatic cancer comprises a heterogeneous group of primary tumors that originate in the peritoneal cavity or metastasize into the peritoneal cavity from a different origin. Metastasis is a characteristic of end-stage disease, often indicative of a poor prognosis with limited treatment options. Peritoneal mesothelial cells (PMCs) are a thin layer of cells present on the surface of the peritoneum. They display differentiated characteristics in embryonic development and adults, representing the first cell layer encountering peritoneal tumors to affect their progression. PMCs have bee

A 57-year-old Japanese man on peritoneal dialysis developed peritoneal dialysis-associated peritonitis caused by Rhodococcus corynebacterioides. After the introduction of peritoneal dialysis, he had experienced four episodes of peritonitis, but the causative organism was not identified in any of episode. When he was hospitalized for the fifth episode of peritonitis, Rhodococcus corynebacterioides was detected in the ascitic fluid. He improved after an intraperitoneal administration of vancomycin (VCM) that was used based on the treatment of peritonitis caused by Corynebacterium spp. However, h…

Fungal peritonitis remains a serious complication of peritoneal dialysis that carries a high morbidity and mortality. Most cases of fungal infections are due to Candida species; however few cases are seen in the setting of non-Candida such Aspergillus, Fusarium, and Mucor. Prompt peritoneal dialysis catheter removal and early anti-fungal treatment have been considered as best strategies to improve survival. We present a rare case of a 27-year-old male with focal segmental glomerulosclerosis on peritoneal dialysis (PD) presented to the hospital recurrent episodes of abdominal pain, diarrhea, an…

BACKGROUND: In the management of peritoneal metastases from colon and rectal cancer, the most favorable results are reported with an aggressive combined treatment on patients who have a small extent of the disease. A test to detect occult peritoneal metastases would greatly facilitate the management of this component of colorectal dissemination.
METHODS: Currently, the standard test by which to confirm the diagnosis of the peritoneal spread of colorectal cancer is peritoneal cytology. To study the utility of this test, we gathered information from patients with biopsy-proven peritoneal metast

INTRODUCTION: Overhydration (OH) remains a recurrent problem in peritoneal dialysis (PD), with deleterious effect in outcomes. Recent evidence suggests a direct relation between OH and increased peritonitis risk. The mechanisms of this connection are not well defined, but gut wall edema and malnutrition are probably involved.
METHODS: Our aim was to assess OH as a risk factor for peritonitis in patients on PD. Retrospective study was done in a PD program with a bio impedance analysis. The investigator reviewed patient charts and documents. The Fresenius® Body Composition Monitor was used to o…
