Nowadays, bipedal walking is undergoing extensive study. Several methods can be used in physiotherapeutic research for identifying defects in bipedal walking as a result of pathology of the musculoskeletal or nervous system. Our work focuses on studying asymmetry of walking based on synchronized bilateral knee-knee cyclograms. Participants presenting with peroneal nerve palsy and foot drop were included in the study. The bilateral cyclograms, also called angle-angle diagrams, were created to quantify gait asymmetry before and immediately after application of a brace. In order to quantify the a

Peroneal nerve injury in the lateral aspect of the knee is frequent, commonly dominated by traumatic or compressive etiologies. Tumors, generally synovial cysts, are exceptional causes. We report a case of a 70-year-old women referred for assessment of peroneal palsy syndrome found to be related to peroneal schwannoma in the lateral aspect of the knee. Schwannoma is the most frequent peripheral nerve benign tumor. It is commonly limited to cranial and upper limb nerves. Localization on the lower limbs (sciatic nerve) has been reported in 1 percent of cases. The peroneal nerve localizaton has n

We report on two patients with chronic pain syndrome of a lower limb due to chronic constriction after radiation therapy in one case and to popliteal entrapment in the other. The patients had been in pain therapy for years and had achieved insufficient analgesia in one case and satisfactory analgesia in another case with high doses of morphine sulphate and other medication. Surgery was indicated for limb salvage in one patient, and for pain relief in the other patient. It consisted of decompression and defect reconstruction by free latissimus dorsi flaps. In both cases, after an uncomplicated

External noninvasive compressive devices are becoming popular for emergent stabilization of pelvic ring disruptions. The ease of application utilizing available materials such as sheets, the noninvasive nature of such measures, and perceived absence of complications has made this a popular stabilization modality. The authors report a case of bilateral peroneal nerve palsy related to the use of external compressive wraps in a patient with pelvic ring injury.

Four children are described who developed focal lower limb nerve palsies following critical illness. Two had clinical and/or neurophysiological evidence of simultaneous generalised critical illness polyneuropathy. The diagnosis was delayed in three patients due to the presence of central motor abnormalities and slow motor recovery. Follow-up from seven months to three years showed minimal or no recovery. In three, a vasculitic skin infarct, compartment syndrome and focal myositis could have caused nerve compression. We suggest that in critical illness peripheral nerves have an increased suscep

Postpartum neuropathies are common, including femoral neuropathy, peroneal neuropathy, lumbosacral trunk plexopathy, and lateral femoral cutaneous neuropathy. Sciatic mononeuropathy in the peripartum period is rare. Postpartum sciatic neuropathy (PSN) in the setting of cesarean section has been reported before. We present a case series of 2 sciatic mononeuropathies after vaginal delivery. Case 1 is a 25-year-old woman who presented with a left foot drop after normal vaginal delivery after being in labor for 3 hours. Case 2 is a 24-year-old woman who presented with a right foot drop after norma

PURPOSE: In diabetes mellitus (DM), upper extremity entrapment neuropathies are suggested to be a component of polyneuropathy (PNP). Our aim is to examine the presence of ulnar neuropathy at the elbow (UNE) and its relation to other findings including PNP in symptomatic and asymptomatic type-2 DM patients who were admitted for routine examinations.
METHODS: The study included all cases referred for electromyography because of type-2 DM between November 2017 and May 2018. Demographic and clinical characteristics were recorded. Routine electromyography examinations in all cases included the fol

The objective was to study the prevalence, clinical features, electrophysiological features, and severity of peripheral neuropathy in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients on peritoneal dialysis (PD) and effect of the presence of diabetes mellitus (DM). Between May 2015 and December 2016, 100 CKD patients on PD were assessed. The prevalence of peripheral neuropathy was 65% based on clinical symptoms and 92% based on electrophysiological parameters. The mean age was 55.7 ± 10.9 years. About 64% were male. Twelve patients (12%) had motor weakness, 64 patients (64%) had positive symptoms and 60 p

INTRODUCTION: Lymphoma occasionally affects the peripheral nervous system. Neuropathy usually appears in patients with known lymphoma but rarely represents the initial manifestation of underlying malignancy. We report a case in which mononeuritis multiplex (MM) was the dominant feature in the clinical presentation of a peripheral T-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL).
OBSERVATION: A 32-year-old man suffered from an asymmetric progressive sensory-motor peripheral neuropathy. The left peroneal nerve was affected first, then the left median nerve after one month, followed by the left trigeminal nerv

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: In the last years the presence of peripheral nervous system (PNS) lesions has been noted in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). The frequency and degree of PNS damage reported by many authors differ among publications, so does the type of PNS lesions. The aim of our study was to perform an electrophysiological evaluation of the peripheral nervous system in patients with a definite diagnosis of multiple sclerosis and without any clinical signs of peripheral neuropathy.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: 110 patients were included in the study, comprising 70 people with a definite

BACKGROUND: Osteochondromas occur most commonly in the distal femur, proximal tibia, and humerus. There are no large studies reviewing the outcome of treatment for patients with an osteochondroma involving the proximal fibula. The purpose of this study is to specifically understand the manifestations of a proximal fibular osteochondroma (PFO) on the preoperative peroneal nerve function, and how surgical management of the osteochondroma affects function immediately postoperatively and at long-term follow-up.
METHODS: This is an institutional review board-approved retrospective review of a cons

OBJECTIVE: Neurogenic drop foot is a common result of acquired damage of the central nervous system and can cause severe restriction of mobility. ActiGait, an implantable functional electrical stimulation device, restores ankle dorsiflexion by active peroneal nerve stimulation. The aim of our study was to evaluate its effect on foot contact pattern during normal walk.
METHODS: Eight patients with drop foot who used ActiGait in everyday life performed a 20-meter comfortable walk test. Gait parameters were evaluated with an insole system (Medilogic). Percentage of biped stance in a double-step,

INTRODUCTION: Thalidomide, a sedative popular in the 1950s and withdrawn from the market in the 1960s because of its teratogenic effects, has emerged again on the market in the last decade as an effective agent in the treatment of multiple myeloma. Unfortunately, apart from positive treatment effects, numerous side effects have been shown in multiple myeloma patients, including drug-induced damage to peripheral nerves, leading to clinical neuropathy.
OBJECTIVES: A clinical and electrophysiological assessment of the prevalence of peripheral neuropathy in patients with multiple myeloma treated

Hereditary neuropathy with liability to pressure palsy (HNPP) is an autosomal dominant disorder caused by heteroplasmic deletion of the peripheral myelin protein 22 (PMP22) gene. HNPP typically presents with clinical features such as peroneal nerve palsy or cubital tunnel syndrome, which are caused by mechanical compression. Diagnosing cases where neuropathy is absent at the pressure site can be challenging. This is a case study of an 18-year-old man who underwent surgery on the left side of his neck over 10 years ago to remove lymphadenopathy. Following the surgery, he experienced recurrent w

New developments in clinical peripheral nerve imaging with MRI over the past few years, primarily those related to nerve entrapment syndromes, are reviewed. The basic principles of peripheral nerve imaging are described briefly. Relevant current or forthcoming technical innovations are described, and then recent work describing novel findings, organized by anatomic location (brachial plexus, upper extremity, and lower extremity), is reviewed. The review concludes with a summary and suggestions of areas in which future clinical research would be particularly helpful.
