Personality and suicidal history in psychiatric patients.

The study sample comprised 575 psychiatric referrals for whom MMPI data were available. Patients were categorized according to suicidal history. The attempted suicide and nonsuicidal patients were differentiated significantly on the D, PD, MF, DY, ES, NE, EX, HO, SD, IP, ANX, and UNC scales. Important differences between the sexes emerged; whereas for men the profiles of the suicidal ideation and nonsuicidal patients were similar, for women those of the suicidal ideation and suicide attempt were similar. Male and female suicide attemptors correspond closely in the pattern and degree of deviati

Personality characteristics of death-row prison inmates.

An analysis of MMPI differences that appeared between a sample of 34 male inmates sentenced to be executed by asphyxiation and a representative prison population sample of 2,551 male inmates revealed that the profiles of both groups were indicative of a behavior disorder. The Death Row inmates presented significantly higher elevations on the PA and SC scales. Further evaluation of the subscale scores for the PA and SC scales demonstrated that the test responses of the Death Row inmates to these two scales were related more closely to feelings of resentment, hopelessness, failure, frustration,

Personality changes associated with reduction of pain.

Of 113 patients treated in a 2-year period, for whom complete data were available, 29 who received surgery for pain relief were compared with 84 who did not, both groups receiving psychological treatment and rehabilitation. Using an analysis of covariance to eliminate pre-treatment differences, the surgery patients showed significantly greater reductions on the MMPI Hysteria and Hypomania scales, and on the invalidism scale of a Health Index, and this was associated with a significantly greater reduction of pain. These differences obtained despite a greater increase in activity levels by the n

The structural core of dual diagnosis: Personality structure profiles in substance use disorders with and without Comorbid personality pathology.

The coexistence of substance use disorders (SUDs) and personality disorders (PDs) is a complex and frequent phenomenon that presents significant clinical challenges. This study adopted Kernberg's Object Relations Theory (ORT) to explore differences in profiles of personality structure among SUD patients with and without comorbid PD. A total of 60 nonclinical participants, 45 outpatients with SUDs, and 42 inpatients with both SUD and PD (dual diagnosis, DD) were assessed using the STIPO-R, a semi-structured interview grounded in ORT. Group differences were analyzed across all domains and subdom…

Mental Health and Personality Functioning of People With Probable Personality Disorder Who Have Coexisting Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

This paper examines the prevalence and comorbidity of complex post-traumatic stress disorder (CPTSD) and borderline personality disorder (BPD) among individuals with probable personality disorder, using baseline data from the Structured Psychological Support clinical trial. The clinical characteristics and personality functioning of participants are summarised and compared between those meeting criteria for BPD, CPTSD, both or neither condition. Among 292 participants, 97% reported significant trauma exposure, and over half met the criteria for CPTSD. Those with CPTSD exhibited higher levels o…

Maladaptive Personality Traits in Primary Care: Validation of the German Modified Brief Personality Inventory for DSM-5 (PID5BF + M).

This study evaluated the psychometric properties of the modified brief Personality Inventory for DSM-5 (PID5BF + M) in primary care (PC) using data from n = 1,030 German patients. Furthermore, differences in maladaptive personality traits between PC patients and the general population were explored. Confirmatory factor analysis supported factorial validity (CFI = 0.949, TLI = 0.942, RMSEA = 0.044, and SRMR = 0.058). Reliability was adequate across domain scales (ωH: 0.75-0.85). PID5BF + M total and domain scale scores, particularly negative affectivity, correlated significantly positively with…

Advancing the Science and Reduction of Personality Disorders Stigma: Introduction to a Special Issue of Personality and Mental Health.

The stigma of personality disorder is longstanding, widespread, prodigious, and harmful. Fortunately, recent advances in our understanding of personality pathology, as well as an increasing interest in stigma, have demonstrated the importance of destigmatization and have catalyzed significant research in this area. In this special issue of Personality and Mental Health, we spotlight the stigma of personality disorders to understand the current research landscape in this area, and to chart a direction for future research. Each of the nine papers included here advances our understanding of stigm…

The 24-year course of substance use disorders in patients with borderline personality disorder and personality-disordered comparison subjects.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study is to detail the long-term course of substance use disorders (SUDs) among patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD) and subjects with other personality disorders (OPD). METHODS: Two hundred and ninety patients with BPD and 72 subjects with OPD were assessed at baseline and 12 contiguous waves of follow-up as part of the McLean Study of Adult Development (MSAD). The SCID-I for DSM-III-R Axis I disorders was administered 13 times (at baseline admission and at 12 follow-up periods). Kaplan-Meier analyses were used to assess time-to-r…

Designing a Measurement Feedback System for Personality Disorders: Should Outcome Monitoring be Based on Symptom Severity or Personality Functioning?

Measurement feedback systems (MFS) providing insight in treatment progress can improve mental healthcare outcomes. However, there is no uniform measurement feedback system that could be used to measure treatment progress for personality disorders (PD). This study compared two types of measures: a generic measure for symptom severity (Brief Symptom Index, BSI) and a specific measure for personality functioning (Severity Indices of Personality Problems, SIPP) at different points in time in order to provide insight in the most suitable measuring moment for a MFS for PD. This study is conducted in…

Caregiver Involvement in Psychotherapy for Young People With Borderline Personality Disorder and Borderline Personality Disorder Features: A Systematic Review.

Caregivers of young people with borderline personality disorder (BPD) or BPD features experience significant burden and distress and often lack effective coping strategies. A family environment of pervasive invalidation can contribute to the disorder and work against effective coping. Consequently, some psychotherapy interventions for young people with BPD or BPD features aim to incorporate caregivers in treatment to varying degrees. This review synthesised results of existing studies that included caregivers in psychotherapy alongside their young person and that examined caregiver outcomes us…

Leveraging normative personality data and machine learning to examine the brain structure correlates of obsessive-compulsive personality disorder traits.

Brain structure correlates of obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD) remain poorly understood as limited OCPD assessment has precluded well-powered studies. Here, we tested whether machine learning (ML; elastic net regression, gradient boosting machines, support vector regression with linear and radial kernels) could estimate OCPD scores from personality data and whether ML-predicted scores are associated with indices of brain structure (cortical thickness and surface area and subcortical volumes). Among older adults (ns = 898-1,606) who completed multiple OCPD assessments, ML elasti…

Investigation of the role of personality traits and emotion regulation on personality functioning in patients with depression/anxiety disorder.

The relationship between the dimensional assessment of personality and difficulties in emotion regulation has yet to be made clear. The present study aimed to investigate the role of personality traits and emotion regulation on personality functioning. Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS), Beck Anxiety Inventory, Beck Depression Inventory, Personality Inventory for DSM-5 (PID-5) and Level of Personality Functioning Scale (LPFS) were rated for 220 patients with depression and/or anxiety disorder diagnosis and 100 healthy controls. Stepwise regression analyses (SRA) were used to find …
