Both attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and conduct disorder (CD) were explored as possible antecedents of opioid dependence and personality disorder. One hundred adult opioid-dependent, treatment-seeking male inpatients were explored; an extended clinical semistructured interview to collect sociodemographic, drug use related, and clinical data and the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV personality disorders SCID-II were carried out. Four groups of patients, namely ADHD alone (4 patients), ADHD + CD (7 patients), CD alone (47 patients) and no ADHD/no CD (42 patients) were id

The alternative model for personality disorders (AMPD) is approaching readiness for inclusion in the main section of the DSM, yet research informing its development has largely overlooked the perspectives of those who receive personality disorder diagnoses. This commentary argues that centering lived experience is essential for evaluating the AMPD's diagnostic language, given evidence that certain trait terminology (notably "manipulativeness") is perceived as highly stigmatizing. The AMPD's Criterion A, which emphasizes personality functioning rather than dispositional traits, may offer a less

Serum creatine phosphokinase (CPK) levels were studied in individuals: 40 psychotic children suffering from childhood autism, atypical personality development, and childhood schizophrenia; five children with childhood aphasia; 22 children with severe personality disorders; 29 normal children and normal siblings of psychotic children; and 14 normal parents of psychotic children. Creatine phosphokinase levels from the entire population of adults and children were normally disturbed, and the mean CPK levels for the eight diagnostic groups were within normal limits. Those 22 children with personal…

The escalating global concerns surrounding radicalization and violent extremism necessitate a comprehensive understanding and explanation. Identifying the risk factors associated with radicalism and violent extremism is critical to the development of risk assessment, prevention, and intervention strategies. It is imperative to distinguish these risks from civic responsibilities (i.e., activism) to safeguard individual rights. This study aims to examine the association between well-established risk factors for violence-personality disorder symptoms-and violent extremist attitudes, radicalism, a

During the last 50 years, many studies have analysed the correlations between personality factors, behavioural pattern, personality type, psychiatric disorders and coronary artery disease (CAD). Although consistent evidence of causal association between CAD and major depressive disorders does exist, the role and importance of personality factors and character traits in CAD development and manifestations are still debatable. We reported the most important studies from the literature on type A behaviour pattern (TABP), the first correlated to CAD. After the initial enthusiasms, large clinical tr

INTRODUCTION: Childhood emotional abuse (CEA) is a recognized risk factor for adolescent mentalizing challenges. However, there's limited understanding about how CEA might influence personality development and elevate the risk of adolescent personality pathology. A deeper grasp of these pathways is crucial, given that adolescence is a pivotal developmental phase for identity integration, personality consolidation, and the emergence of personality disorders. As the emphasis shifts to dimensional perspectives on adolescent personality pathology, the spotlight is increasingly on adolescents' evol…

CONTEXT: Little is known about the role of a broad range of personality disorders in the course of substance use disorder (SUD) and whether these differ by substance. The existing literature focuses mostly on antisocial personality disorder and does not come to clear conclusions.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the association between the 10 DSM-IV personality disorders and the persistence of common SUDs in a 3-year prospective study of a national sample.
DESIGN: Data were drawn from participants in the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions (NESARC) who had alcohol dependen

Borderline personality disorder constitutes a significant medical challenge. Despite the fact that its occurrence among adolescents is currently attracting increasing interest from both clinicians and researchers, there is still insufficient data on this phenomenon. The etiology and maintenance of borderline personality disorder are not yet fully comprehended. Neuropeptides, including oxytocin and vasopressin, are considered to be involved in the development of this condition. The mechanism behind the actions of these neurohormones requires further investigation. Our work aims to collect and a

In rare instances, patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) may become addicted to their own medication or develop behavioral addictions such as pathological gambling. This is surprising because PD patients typically have a very low incidence of drug abuse and display a personality type that is the polar opposite of the addictive personality. These rare addictive syndromes, which appear to result from excessive dopaminergic medication use, illustrate the link between dopamine, personality, and addiction. We describe the clinical phenomena and attempt to relate them to current models of learning

Loneliness has broad public health importance, especially in older adulthood, and there is some evidence suggesting it is associated with several personality disorders (PDs). The etiology of these PD-loneliness associations, however, has rarely been studied, especially in the context of the maladaptive traits of the DSM-5 alternative model of personality disorder (AMPD). To address these limitations, we estimated phenotypic, genetic, and unique environmental associations between loneliness and maladaptive personality traits in a sample of older adults from the Minnesota Twin Registry (n = 1,35

OBJECTIVE: Adolescence is a critical period for personality formation and vulnerability to anxiety. Although personality traits are well-established predictors of adolescent anxiety, comparatively little research has examined the cultural mechanisms underlying this association. Drawing on culture-personality interaction theory, this study examined whether Red music cultural identification and self-identity sequentially mediate the association between Big Five personality traits and anxiety among Chinese adolescents. Specifically, we tested the pathway "Big Five personality traits → Red music c

BACKGROUND: With the explosive development of the short-form video (SFV) industry in recent years, the issue of SFV addiction among young people has attracted increasing attention from scholarship. Researchers have found that proactive personality is negatively associated with behavioral addiction. Additionally, SFV Apps tend to place users in a "filter bubble" to passively consume the pushed video content. Proactiveness could be an effective trait to resist the excessive use of SFVs. Thus, proactive personality may be a negative predictor of SFV addiction.
OBJECTIVE: The present study aims a

Both environmental (e.g. interpersonal traumatization during childhood and adolescence) and genetic factors may contribute to the development of Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). Twin studies assessing borderline personality symptoms/features in the general population indicate that genetic factors underlying these symptoms/features are shared in part with the personality traits of the Five Factor Model (FFM) of personality-the "Big Five". In the present study, the genetic overlap of BPD with the Big Five -Openness to Experience, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, and Neurotic

It is argued that personality pathology represents the final emergent product of a complex interaction of underlying neurobehavioral systems as well as environment inputs. A number of factors may be involved in the developmental pathway and a cascading of effects is plausible, although a unifying cascade for all personality disorders is not likely. The present study suggests a possible cascade relevant to one personality disorder: schizoid personality disorder in emerging adulthood. In brief, it is hypothesized that the absence of a relationship characterized by a rich degree of psychological

UNLABELLED: Previous studies revealed the possibility of abnormal personality development role in the etiology of eating disorders. It was found that a diagnosis of personality disorders, mostly borderline personality and/or histrionic personality can be made in about 44-46% of bulimic patients. The inconsistencies in identifying personality types using categorical assessment approaches have encouraged a conceptualization of the personality from a dimensional perspective. It was revealed that the Tridimensional Personality Questionnaire (TPQ) and Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI) are u…

Antisocial personality disorder, psychopathy, dissocial personality disorder and sociopathy are constructs that have generally been used to predict recidivism and dangerousness, alongside being used to exclude patients from treatment services. However, 'antisocial personality disorder' has recently begun to emerge as a treatment diagnosis, a development reflected within cognitive behaviour therapy and mentalisation-based psychotherapy. Many of the behaviour characteristics of antisocial personality disorder are, at the same time, being targeted by interventions at criminal justice settings. A

The personality traits neuroticism and conscientiousness are associated with the risk of clinical dementia and other neurodegenerative diseases. Less is known about the association between personality and biological markers of the underlying brain pathology. This study examined the relationship between Five-Factor Model personality traits and blood-based biomarkers of neuroaxonal injury (Neurofilament Light, NfL) and astrogliosis (Glial Fibrillary Acidic Protein, GFAP). Participants (N = 4076; mean age 67; 59.9% female; 19.3% cognitively impaired) were from the Health and Retirement Study. Per

AIM: Type A personality-characterized by time urgency, strong drive, and a need for achievement and competitiveness-has been shown to be associated with reduced mortality in patients with diabetes. However, it is not known whether a Type A personality might protect against diabetic foot ulcer (DFU). This prompted our present analysis of the association between Type A personality and DFU.
METHODS: The Bortner Scale questionnaire was used to assess Type A personality in 386 patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D), including 104 patients also presenting with, and 282 presenting without, DFU. Additio
