Seasonality of prolactin in birds and mammals.

In most animals, annual rhythms in environmental cues and internal programs regulate seasonal physiology and behavior. Prolactin, an evoluti … prolactin derive from an endogenous timer within the pituitary gland that is entrained by external photoperiod. In this review, we describe the conserved nature of prolactin signaling in birds and mammals and highlight its role in regulating multiple diverse physiological systems. Characterization of a Jumping Stereotypy in Gerbils (Meriones unguiculatus) and Assessment of Opaque Tubing Enrichment on Stereotypies and Breeding.

Mongolian gerbils can develop stereotypic behaviors, including corner digging. At our institution, gerbils also engage in repetitive corner jumping, which we sought to characterize as a potentially novel stereotypy in gerbils. We then attempted to mitigate this behavior by mimicking the natural habitat by adding intracage environmental complexity. Seventeen gerbil breeding pairs were video recorded in their home cages during the light cycle. Repetitive corner jumping and digging were compared between different times of day to assess when the behaviors occurred and whether they were temporally

Entomophthora muscae resting spore formation in vivo in the host Delia radicum.

The formation in vivo of Entomophthora muscae resting spores was investigated in the host, Delia radicum (cabbage root fly), by analysis of … r. We did not detect any significant year effect; thus, the results support the hypothesis that the photoperiod is the most important abiotic factor controlling E. muscae resting spore formation in D. radicum.

Photic regulation of melatonin in humans: ocular and neural signal transduction.

Light is a potent stimulus for regulating the pineal gland's production of melatonin and the broader circadian system in humans. It initially was thought that only very bright photic stimuli (> or = 2500 lux) could suppress nocturnal melatonin secretion and induce other circadian responses. It is now known that markedly lower illuminances (< or = 200 lux) can acutely suppress melatonin or entrain and phase shift melatonin rhythms when exposure conditions are optimized. The elements for physical/biological stimulus processing that regulate photic influences on melatonin secretion include the ph

Near-Infrared Light and Skin: Why Intensity Matters.

Infrared light (760 nm-1 mm) constitutes approximately 40% of the solar radiation reaching the ground at sea level. Shortest wavelength near-infrared (NIR) photons (NIR or IR-A: 760-1,400 nm) can penetrate the epidermis, dermis, and subcutaneous tissue with numerous biological effects. NIR used to have a bad reputation on the basis of past studies using high-intensity artificial light sources (above the solar IR-A irradiance threshold) at high doses leading to detrimental effects (i.e., upregulation of matrix metalloproteinase-1). However, when looking at the other side of the coin and what we

Serum concentrations of melatonin in prepubertal gilts exposed to either constant or stepwise biweekly alteration in scotophase.

Melatonin (MEL), a hormone known to mediate photoperiodic cues, is secreted from the pineal gland in a circadian fashion in numerous species. The transduction of photoperiodic information into the secretion of MEL, however, remains controversial in the pig. To determine whether domestic pigs have a nocturnal increase in serum melatonin when exposed to equatorial photoperiods only, 24 prepubertal gilts (38.7 +/- 0.7 kg; 104.5 +/- 0.8 d) and 12 mature ewes, serving as positive controls, were randomly assigned to one of two environmentally regulated rooms. The light (L):dark (D) schedule in one r…

Production and encapsulation of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA)‑rich lipid extract from Phaeodactylum tricornutum under different cultivation conditions.

The microalga Phaeodactylum tricornutum is a promising microalgal source of the omega-3 fatty acid eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). This study investigated the effects of indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), temperature, and photoperiod on biomass production, lipid accumulation, and EPA productivity of P. tricornutum, and assessed the physicochemical properties, oxidative stability, and in vitro digestion of the encapsulated lipid extract. P. tricornutum was cultured in F/2 medium until the end of the log phase. A 23 factorial design was employed with IAA (0 and 5 ppm), temperature (15 °C and 20 °C), and p…

Increasing the reliability and reproducibility of aquatic ecotoxicology: Learn lessons from aquaculture research.

Regulatory ecotoxicology highly relies on aquatic toxicity studies carried out under controlled conditions. Researchers recently expressed increasing concern about their possible lack of repeatability/reproducibility in many cases. Poor experimental designs, inappropriate statistics and lack of accurate reporting are often pointed out. However, I believe that there is also insufficient attention paid to the various experimental conditions under which fish studies are conducted. These conditions encompass numerous factors (temperature, photoperiod, food, stressors…) which modulate fish response…

Day-length encoding through tonic photic effects in the retinorecipient SCN region.

The circadian clock in the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) plays a critical role in seasonal processes by sensing ambient photoperiod. To explore how it measures day-length, we assessed the state of SCN oscillators using markers for neuronal activity (c-FOS) and the clock protein (PER1) in Syrian hamsters housed in long (LD, 16 : 8 h light : dark) vs. short days (SD, 8 : 16 h light : dark). During SD, there was no detectable phase dispersion across the rostrocaudal extent of the nucleus. In contrast, during LD, rhythms in the caudal SCN phase led those in the mid- and rostral SCN by 4-8 h and 8-…

Role of the CONSTANS protein in regulating flowering time in Thlaspi arvense L.

The floral transition, which denotes the shift from vegetative to reproductive growth, is a fundamental process in plant development that critically influences both plant reproductive success and crop yield. Photoperiod, defined as the perception of day length, acts as a crucial environmental cue regulating floral transition in numerous plant species. Thlaspi arvense L., a promising oilseed crop within the Brassicaceae family, demonstrates photoperiod-insensitive flowering in its Kunming ecotype. To elucidate the underlying mechanisms, homologs of the Arabidopsis thaliana CONSTANS (CO) and FLO…

Seasonality in mood disorders: Probing association of accelerometer-derived physical activity with daylength and solar insolation.

Mood disorders are the leading cause of disability worldwide. Up to 30 percent of individuals with major depressive disorder (MDD) and bipolar disorder (BD) display a seasonal pattern of onset, a phenomenon now recognized in the official diagnostic manuals (DSM-5 and ICD-11). Very little is known about the influence of day length (photoperiod) and sunlight intensity (solar insolation) on seasonal patterns in MDD and BD. Here we report a quantitative approach to examine the relationship between sunlight measures and objectively measured motor activity patterns to understand environmental factor…

The Effects of Cynomorium songaricum on the Reproductive Activity in Male Golden Hamsters.

Cynomorium songaricum (CS) has been used in traditional Korean medicine in treating male impotence and sexual dysfunction. We investigated the effects of aqueous CS extract on the reproductive activity of golden hamsters whose spermatogenetic capacity is active in summer and inactive in winter. The animals were divided into 5 groups: long photoperiod (LP) control, short photoperiod (SP) control, and SP animals treated with low, middle, or high concentrations of CS. The animals were orally ingested with low (0.5 g/kg), middle (1.0 g/kg), or high (2.5 g/kg) concentrations of the aqueous extracts…

Pineal-independent regulation of photo-nonresponsiveness in the Siberian hamster (Phodopus sungorus).

The pineal hormone melatonin influences circadian rhythms and also mediates reproductive responses to photoperiod. The authors tested whether pinealectomy influences circadian oscillators responsible for induction of nonresponsiveness to short day lengths by preventing normal short-day patterns of circadian entrainment. Adult male Siberian hamsters were pinealectomized or sham operated, maintained in either 18 h light per day (18L) or 15L for 10 weeks, and then tested for responsiveness to 10L. Because pinealectomized hamsters do not show gonadal regression in short day lengths, responsiveness…

Seasonal and Nutritional Fluctuations in the mRNA Levels of the Short Form of the Leptin Receptor (LRa) in the Hypothalamus and Anterior Pituitary in Resistin-Treated Sheep.

The short form of the leptin receptor (LRa) plays a key role in the transport of leptin to the central nervous system (CNS). Here, the resistin (RSTN)-mediated expression of LRa in the preoptic area (POA), ventromedial and dorsomedial nuclei (VMH/DMH),arcuate nucleus (ARC) and the anterior pituitary gland (AP)was analyzed considering the photoperiodic (experiment 1) and nutritional status (experiment 2) of ewes. In experiment 1, 30 sheep were fed normally and received one injection of saline or two doses of RSTN one hour prior to euthanasia. RSTN increased LRa expression mainly in the ARC and …

The Importance of Ambient Temperature to Growth and the Induction of Flowering.

Plant development is exquisitely sensitive to the environment. Light quantity, quality, and duration (photoperiod) have profound effects on vegetative morphology and flowering time. Recent studies have demonstrated that ambient temperature is a similarly potent stimulus influencing morphology and flowering. In Arabidopsis, ambient temperatures that are high, but not so high as to induce a heat stress response, confer morphological changes that resemble the shade avoidance syndrome. Similarly, these high but not stressful temperatures can accelerate flowering under short day conditions as effec…
