Research Priorities in Limb and Task-Specific Dystonias.

Dystonia, which causes intermittent or sustained abnormal postures and movements, can present in a focal or a generalized manner. In the limbs, focal dystonia can occur in either the upper or lower limbs and may be task-specific causing abnormal motor performance for only a specific task, such as in writer's cramp, runner's dystonia, or musician's dystonia. Focal limb dystonia can be non-task-specific and may, in some circumstances, be associated with parkinsonian disorders. The true prevalence of focal limb dystonia is not known and is likely currently underestimated, leaving a knowledge gap

Virtual reconstruction of the endocranial anatomy of the early Jurassic marine crocodylomorph Pelagosaurus typus (Thalattosuchia).

Thalattosuchians were highly specialised aquatic archosaurs of the Jurassic and Early Cretaceous, and represent a peak of aquatic adaptation among crocodylomorphs. Relatively little is known of their endocranial anatomy or its relevance for the evolution of sensory systems, physiology, and other aspects of biology. Nevertheless, such data have significance for two reasons: (1) thalattosuchians represent an important data point regarding adaptation to marine life in tetrapods; and (2) as early-diverging members of the crocodylian stem-lineage, thalattosuchians provide information on the evoluti

A pilot study examining measures of balance and mobility in children with unilateral lower-limb amputation.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with unilateral lower-limb amputation (LLA) have altered structure and physiology of their lower limbs which impairs their balance, mobility, physical function and participation in physical activities. As part of (re)habilitation, focus is given to improving gait and balance in order to enhance overall mobility, function, self-efficacy, and independence. However, the relationships amongst body impairments and physical activity limitations remain unclear, particularly in the pediatric population. OBJECTIVE: To provide an examination of the relationships among balance an

Seasonal changes in adiposity: the roles of the photoperiod, melatonin and other hormones, and sympathetic nervous system.

It appears advantageous for many non-human animals to store energy body fat extensively and efficiently because their food supply is more labile and less abundant than in their human counterparts. The level of adiposity in many of these species often shows predictable increases and decreases with changes in the season. These cyclic changes in seasonal adiposity in some species are triggered by changes in the photoperiod that are faithfully transduced into a biochemical signal through the nightly secretion of melatonin (MEL) via the pineal gland. Here, we focus primarily on the findings from th

A novel approach for comparative study of periosteum, muscle, subcutis, and skin microcirculation by intravital fluorescence microscopy.

Herein, we report a new model, which allows comparative study of the microcirculation of different peripheral tissues, i.e., periosteum, skeletal muscle, subcutis, and skin. Using dextran-insensitive Wistar rats gracilis and semitendinosus muscles of the left hindlimb were prepared in association with their appertaining tibial fragments, subcutis, and skin. Blood supply was guaranteed by the femoral artery via the saphenous vessels. High-resolution intravital epi-illumination microscopy of the two muscles displayed the typical microvascular architecture with the capillaries running in parallel

Triggering modalities to synchronise non-invasive respiratory support in preterm infants: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Increasing evidence suggests that synchronised nasal intermittent positive pressure ventilation (sNIPPV) may be the optimal mode of non-invasive respiratory support. However, no comprehensive review of sNIPPV modes is available. This review aims to describe different synchronisation methods for sNIPPV and compare their effectiveness in clinical, physiological and technical outcomes with other modes of non-invasive respiratory support. METHODS: This review identified all clinical studies in preterm infants that compared sNIPPV to other non-invasive respiratory support modes or comp

Physiological model using diffuse reflectance spectroscopy for nonmelanoma skin cancer diagnosis.

Diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) is a noninvasive, fast, and low-cost technology with potential to assist cancer diagnosis. The goal of this study was to test the capability of our physiological model, a computational Monte Carlo lookup table inverse model, for nonmelanoma skin cancer diagnosis. We applied this model on a clinical DRS dataset to extract scattering parameters, blood volume fraction, oxygen saturation and vessel radius. We found that the model was able to capture physiological information relevant to skin cancer. We used the extracted parameters to classify (basal cell car

Oxidative stress and antioxidant enzyme activities in elite female Turkish cross-country skiers.

BACKGROUND: Oxidative stress–related processes contribute to exercise physiology through redox-sensitive signaling, yet when oxidant production exceeds antioxidant buffering, oxidative modifications may be reflected in circulating biomarkers. Evidence in elite female endurance athletes remains limited, particularly in cross-country skiers, and interpretation should be restricted to biomarker-level descriptions within the constraints of cross-sectional designs. METHODS: This cross-sectional comparative study included 17 elite female cross-country skiers and 17 age- and BMI-matched sedentary wom

Genome wide identification and analysis of inositol tetrakisphosphate kinase (ITPK) gene family in Triticum aestivum L.

Inositol tetrakisphosphates kinase (ITPK) plays a vital role in regulating cellular responses to abiotic stress, plant hormone signaling and various other aspects of plant growth and development. Additionally, it is also involved in phosphorous, inositol phosphate metabolism and synthesize phytic acid which is the main phosphorous storage form in seeds. While essential for plant physiology, high phytic acid levels reduce the bioavailability of minerals such as Fe and Zn, which impact nutritional quality negatively. Despite its importance, the ITPK gene family remains largely unexplored in brea

Long-Term Effects of Right Ventricular Pressure and Volume Overload: A Comparative Analysis in an Ovine Model.

Background/Objectives: Pressure overload (PO) and volume overload (VO) represent important mechanisms underlying right ventricular (RV) failure; however, long-term comparative data regarding their distinct pathophysiological consequences remain limited. This study aimed to compare the long-term effects of PO versus VO in a large animal model. Methods: Juvenile sheep were randomly assigned to either a PO group (n = 7) or a VO group (n = 8). PO was induced by pulmonary artery banding, whereas VO was induced by pulmonary leaflet perforation (n = 4) or transannular patch (TAP) reconstruction (n =

Comparative Study Between Various Scoring Systems in Predicting the Severity of Acute Pancreatitis.

Background Acute pancreatitis (AP) is an acute inflammatory condition of the pancreas, peri-pancreatic tissues, and several organs, leading to multiple organ dysfunction syndrome and a higher risk of mortality. For many years, scoring systems that include biochemical, radiological, and clinical criteria for determining severity have been used. Though numerous studies have used various scoring methods to evaluate the severity of AP, this study has been conducted to compare four scoring systems: bedside index of severity in AP (BISAP), acute physiology and chronic health evaluation (APACHE II),

Analysis of the effect of multi-channel continuous nursing intervention on patients post-radical gastrectomy.

BACKGROUND: Radical gastrectomy (RGE) for gastric carcinoma (GC) has exerted definite therapeutic efficacy in treating patients with GC. However, a notable risk of postoperative complications (POCs) persists among middle-aged and elderly patients with compromised physiological functions. Hence, developing and implementing reliable nursing interventions to optimize the comprehensive management of these patients is deemed imperative. AIM: To analyze the association of multi-channel continuous nursing intervention with POCs, negative emotions (NEs), and quality of life (QoL) of patients undergoi

Continuous sitting position during the postoperative period as an intervention to reduce risk of cerebrospinal fluid leak after endoscopic endonasal surgery.

INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVES: In recent decades, endoscopic endonasal surgery for skull base tumours has modified the way in which this region is approached. One of the most feared complications is the cerebrospinal fluid leak. It has been shown in different publications about CSF physiology that changes in the position modify the pressure of the CSF (pCSF). With this background, it is proposed as a viable, noninvasive, and very low-risk option, the continuous sitting position in patients during their hospital stay after endoscopic endonasal surgery as an adjuvant intervention to reduce the risk of

Exploring Postoperative Outcomes of Primary Repair Versus Loop Ileostomy in Typhoid Ileal Perforation: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Typhoid ileal perforation, a severe complication of typhoid fever, often leads to peritonitis and high mortality, particularly in low-income countries. While conservative management was once standard, surgical interventions like primary repair and loop ileostomy have been preferred since the 1970s, though outcomes vary due to late presentations and resource constraints. This systematic review and meta-analysis, adhering to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, evaluates postoperative morbidity, mortality, and hospital stay for these techniques.

Management of failed pyloric drainage procedures in patients with gastroparesis.

BACKGROUND: Laparoscopic pyloroplasty and gastric peroral endoscopic myotomy (G-POEM) relieve symptoms in most patients with refractory gastroparesis (GP). However, approximately 28% of patients who underwent pyloroplasty and an estimated 13% of patients who underwent G-POEM per year experience primary or secondary failure. Evidence-based guidance on what to do next is lacking. This study aimed to synthesize current data on the evaluation and treatment of patients with GP after failed pyloric drainage and propose a pragmatic, algorithm-oriented pathway for multidisciplinary care. METHODS: A s

Comparative Lysine Acetylome Analysis of Y. pestis YfiQ/CobB Mutants Reveals that Acetylation of SlyA Lys73 Significantly Promotes Biofilm Formation of Y. pestis.

Increasing evidence shows that protein lysine acetylation is involved in almost every aspect of cellular physiology in bacteria. Yersinia pestis is a flea-borne pathogen responsible for millions of human deaths in three global pandemics. However, the functional role of lysine acetylation in this pathogen remains unclear. Here, we found more acetylated proteins and a higher degree of acetylation in Y. pestis grown under mammalian host (Mh) conditions than under flea vector (Fv) conditions, suggesting that protein acetylation could significantly change during fleabite transmission. Comparative a

Colorectal Endoscopic Stenting Trial (CReST) for obstructing left-sided colorectal cancer: randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer often presents with obstruction needing urgent, potentially life-saving decompression. The comparative efficacy and safety of endoluminal stenting versus emergency surgery as initial treatment for such patients is uncertain. METHODS: Patients with left-sided colonic obstruction and radiological features of carcinoma were randomized to endoluminal stenting using a combined endoscopic/fluoroscopic technique followed by elective surgery 1-4 weeks later, or surgical decompression with or without tumour resection. Treatment allocation was via a central randomization s

Factors influencing performance and injury risk in elite female Gaelic team sport players and future research directions: a narrative review.

BACKGROUND: Sports science research in elite female Gaelic team sports has increased in recent years, but still a large disparity exists between the volume of studies involving male and female players. As a consequence of this, it is difficult for practitioners to develop an evidence-based approach when working with female players. MAIN BODY: In this review, we discuss the current research available in elite female Gaelic team sports with focus on seven specific areas including physical and physiological demands, anthropometric and performance characteristics, injury risk, nutritional conside

Two homologous Salmonella serogroup C1-specific genes are required for flagellar motility and cell invasion.

BACKGROUND: Salmonella is a major bacterial pathogen associated with a large number of outbreaks of foodborne diseases. Many highly virulent serovars that cause human illness belong to Salmonella serogroup C1, and Salmonella ser. Choleraesuis is a prominent cause of invasive infections in Asia. Comparative genomic analysis in our previous study showed that two homologous genes, SC0368 and SC0595 in Salmonella ser. Choleraesuis were unique to serogroup C1. In this study, two single-deletion mutants (Δ0368 and Δ0595) and one double-deletion mutant (Δ0368Δ0595) were constructed based on the genom
