Hyperkeratosis of the nipples and areolae (HNA) is an uncommon skin disorder with no definite aetiology. We report a case of a 16-year-old boy, who presented with bilateral pigmentation and thickening of the nipples and areolae, accompanied with linear brown protrusions on the anterior neck and a velvet like appearance with pigmentation on the axillary bilaterlly. Based on clinical and histopathological, and dermatoscopic findings, the diagnosis of bilateral HNA accompanied by linear nevus and acanthosis nigricans was made. The skin lesions were improved by treatment with topical calcipotriol

Purple urine bag syndrome is a rare disorder where the plastic urinary catheter bag and tubing turn purple. The discolouration is due to the presence of indigo and indirubin pigments which are metabolites of tryptophan. It is associated with urinary tract infection. Bacteria that produce sulphatase and phosphatase are involved in the formation of these pigments. Purple urine bag syndrome is associated with higher morbidity and mortality, compared to urinary tract infection without this phenomenon. We present a case report of this rare phenomenon occurring in a 68-year-old woman.

BACKGROUND: Three cases of pointillist nevus, which is a distinctive clinical type of benign melanocytic nevus with variegated pigment, have been described in the literature to date.
OBSERVATIONS: A 24-year-old man presented with an acquired melanocytic lesion composed of multiple tiny pigmented dots. Dermoscopy revealed multiple brown globules on a reddish skin-colored background, and histologic examination demonstrated architectural disorder with cytologic atypia. Conclusion To the best of our knowledge, we report a case of dysplastic pointillist nevus.

Vitiligo is a skin disorder characterized by depigmentation of the skin due to a lack of melanin. This condition affects men and woman of all ages and its incidence is not restricted by ethnicity or region. Vitiligo is a multifactorial disease, in which melanocytes, which serve important functions in skin pigmentation and immune processes, are impaired. There is sufficient evidence that immunological and genetic factors are primarily responsible for the destruction and dysfunction of melanocytes. Therefore, genetic DNA sequence variants that participate in skin homeostasis, pigmentation and im

Infectious pseudochromhidrosis is a rare dermatological disorder, characterized by a change in colour of the sweat from normal skin, caused by pigments from microorganisms. Such pigments are a result of evolutionary competition among microorganisms, which appears to be a decisive factor in their survival, patho-genicity, and virulence. Four bacteria are known to be involved in infectious pseudochromhidrosis: Bacillus spp. (blue colour), Corynebacterium spp. (brown/black colour), Serratia marcescens (red/pink colour), and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (blue-green colour). Infectious pseudochromhidrosi

Autosomal recessive ocular albinism (AROA) is a disorder characterized by reduced pigmentation of the retina and iris, hypoplastic fovea, variably reduced visual acuity and nystagmus. Pigmentation of the skin and hair is normal, but is usually slightly lighter than in unaffected sibs. We analysed 12 unrelated patients with AROA, and found that two had abnormalities of the tyrosinase (TYR) gene. These two patients were each a compound heterozygote for a different pathologic mutant allele and an allele containing a 'normal' polymorphism, Arg402Gln, which results in a tyrosinase polypeptide with

Partial unilateral lentiginosis (PUL) is a pigmentation disorder characterized by multiple lentigines restricted to the normal skin in a unilateral and segmental pattern. Various lasers have been used for the treatment of this pigmented disorders, one of which is the copper bromide (CuBr) laser, which emits a dual-wavelength beam at 511 nm and 578 nm. A 35-year-old woman presented with multiple brown macules with a sharp demarcation from the midline of the forehead to the right cheek in a dermatomal distribution. Histopathological results showed increased melanin pigmentation in the basal laye

Benolea® (EFLA®943) is a standardized dry olive leaf extract (DOLE) considered safe for food consumption and has demonstrated superior pharmaceutical benefits such as antioxidant, anti-obesity, and anti-hypertensive activities. However, there is no study on its effects on melanogenesis yet. Disruption in the sequence of steps in melanogenesis can lead to hypopigmentary disorders which occur due to reduced production or export of pigment melanin in the skin. There is a need for safe and nontoxic therapeutics for the treatment of hypopigmentation disorders. Herein, we studied the effects of DOLE…

Structural color pigments based on block copolymer self-assembly offer non-fading color. However, their brightness and saturation are often limited by a low-refractive index contrast and incoherent scattering arising from disorder. Here, we engineer non-iridescent photonic pigments by incorporating ligand-functionalized TiO2 nanoparticles into the poly(2-vinylpyridine) domains of onion-like polystyrene-block-poly(2-vinylpyridine) microspheres fabricated by emulsion-confined self-assembly. Thermally assisted solvent evaporation improves long-range lamellar order at high nanoparticle loadings, s

Diffuse hyperpigmentation with guttate hypopigmentation (DHGH) is a new acquired pigmentary disorder. Only a few cases have previously been reported in the Chinese population, in Chinese. To summarise the clinical, dermoscopic, and histopathological findings of DHGH in the English literature, to improve the recognition and management of this condition. This was a retrospective study to summarise the clinical, dermoscopic, and pathological findings of nine cases of DHGH. All nine patients with DHGH were female. The age at onset varied from 6 to 24 years (median 17 years). Patients were generall

Pigmented and non-pigmented nail alterations are a frequent challenge for dermatologists. A profound knowledge of clinical and dermatoscopic features of nail disorders is crucial because a range of differential diagnoses and even potentially life-threatening diseases are possible underlying causes. Nail matrix melanocytes of unaffected individuals are in a dormant state, and, therefore, fingernails and toenails physiologically are non-pigmented. The formation of continuous, longitudinal pigmented streaks (longitudinal melanonychia) may either be caused by a benign activation of matrix melanocy

Skin color is one of the major attributes that defines both individual distinctiveness and differences between groups. There is a preference for lighter skin world-wide, among both light- and dark-skinned individuals, further leading to skin-color bias based upon skin-color hierarchy within certain ethnoracial groups. The psychiatric and psychosocial ramifications of skin color are important in several situations, including (1) disorders of skin discoloration (eg, vitiligo), which can significantly affect the psychosocial development of the patient especially when it has its first onset during

The human skin is constantly exposed to external factors that affect its integrity, UV radiation being one of the main stress factors. The repeated exposure to this radiation leads to increased production of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) which activate a series of processes involved in photoaging. Excessive UV exposure also exacerbates melanin production leading to a variety of pigmentation disorders. Xanthones are reported to exhibit properties that prevent deleterious effects of UV exposure and high levels of ROS in the organism, so in this work a wide library of xanthones with different pat…

Clofazimine (CFZ) has been shown to exhibit synergism with amikacin and clarithromycin against nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM), and is thus being repositioned to treat associated infections. However, clinical evidence supporting its efficacy and optimal dosage remains limited. Nonetheless, in vitro and retrospective studies have suggested its potential utility in treating NTM pulmonary disease. Moreover, CFZ pharmacokinetics and CFZ-induced side effects, such as pigmentation, heart rate corrected QT interval prolongation, and gastrointestinal disorders, are well characterized. This study aim

Skin aging is a complex biological process affected by a plethora of intrinsic and extrinsic factors that alter cutaneous functions through the modulations of signaling pathways and responses. Expressed in various cell types and skin tissue layers, G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) play a vital role in regulating skin aging. We have cataloged 156 GPCRs expressed in the skin and reviewed their roles in skin aging, such as pigmentation, loss of elasticity, wrinkles, rough texture, and aging-associated skin disorders. By exploring the GPCRs found in the skin, it may be possible to develop new t

Melasma, a pigmentation disorder, commonly occurs in exposed skin areas and can be attributed to several factors. Ultraviolet radiation (UVR) is the primary factor that induces and aggravates melasma. Considering gene expression, exposed skin areas experience abnormal gene expression, involving melanin metabolism, oxidative stress, impaired skin barrier function, and abnormal composition of nerve factors. From a histological perspective, UVR can cause basement membrane collapse, melanocyte sinking, and disorders of skin lipid metabolism. Emerging therapies have focused on these pathological al

During the last century of modern dermatology, more than 30 skin diseases have been described first by physicians from Japan. Many of those conditions were disorders of pigmentation and keratinization, which are quite common in Oriental patients. Since the late 1940s, a number of skin diseases first reported in Japan have gained attention internationally among them being Kimura disease, hypomelanosis of Ito, Kawasaki disease, adult T-cell leukemia/ lymphoma, eosinophilic pustular folliculitis, prurigo pigmentosa, and Ofuji's papuloerythroderma. In this article, we review skin diseases that wer

BACKGROUND: The relationship between the occurrence of skin diseases and skin tattoos remains unclear. Dermatologic disorders have been reported to occur in about 2% of cases. In addition, tattoo pigment can migrate to the regional lymph nodes through the lymphatic vessels and subsequently mimic metastatic disease from melanoma.
METHODS: A 23-year-old Caucasian man presented with a pigmented lesion on the left scapular region, which had slowly enlarged over time. The patient exhibited an extensive tattoo on the left upper arm, left shoulder, and part of the upper back. His medical history was
