BACKGROUND: Despite the availability of various medical treatments for pityriasis rosea, a large percentage of patients fail to achieve satisfactory results. Erythromycin is reported to be effective in the treatment of pityriasis rosea.

Pityriasis versicolor is a common disorder of the skin, which is characterised by scaly hypo- or hyperpigmented lesions on the body. The lipophilic yeast, Malassezia, is considered to be the aetiological agent of this disease. A number of treatment options, both topical and systemic, have been shown to be effective. A critical evaluation of treatment options is presented.

Increased temperature and sweating are considered factors predisposing to pityriasis versicolor. In this case report, sparing of the vaults of the axillae which are naturally occluded and sweaty areas, in a patient with widespread lesions of pityriasis versicolor is discussed. Pityriasis rosea, first named as such in 1860, probably holds the longest record for an exanthem suspected to be associated with an infection but for which an exact cause has not been found. A patient with pityriasis lichenoides chronica (PLC) during the course of her skin disease developed tuberculosis of cervical lymph nodes. Anti-tuberculosis treatment resulted in remission of PLC. Mycobacterium tuberculosis could be one of the triggering agent in pityriasis lichenoides.

Twenty-four patients with extensive or recurrent pityriasis versicolor were treated with a single oral dose of 400 mg of fluconazole. Twenty-three patients returned for follow up. Seventeen or 74%, were free of lesions 3 weeks after treatment and no recurrences were seen 6 weeks after treatment. The majority of the patients found the treatment effective, safe and convenient.
