Our previous study (27) showed that the cardiac sympathetic afferent reflex (CSAR) was enhanced in dogs with congestive heart failure. OBJECTIVES: Capillary leakage, a frequent complication in septic shock, is characterized by loss of intravasal fluid resulting in generalized edema and hemodynamic instability despite massive fluid therapy. We have shown that administration of an established colloid 200/0.5 hydroxyethyl starch (HES) stabilized plasma volume in a porcine septic shock model. Fifty-six patients with essential hypertension and 29 normotensive controls were hospitalized and volume expanded with saline or volume depleted with furosemide. We measured plasma norepinephrine (NE) and dopamine-beta-hydroxylase (DBH) to evaluate their sympathetic nervous activity. We assessed blood volume (BV) in 20 edematous patients with nephrotic syndrome and in 32 subjects without renal or other disease liable to induce BV variation. Two methods were chosen, one using 131I-albumin and the other 51Cr red blood cells. Among the 20 patients, 11 presented minimal-change lesions, and 9 had histological glomerular impairment. The BV was significantly higher when measured with 131I-albumin in both nephrotic patients and in controls. The effect of plasma interference upon 2 AVP antisera both of high affinity and specificity, was investigated. Chromatography of plasma from a normal subject on Sephadex G-25 gave 3 peaks of AVP-like material with antibody A eluting in the void volume, salt volume and in the AVP volume; the quantity of AVP-like material detected in the void volume was 95% less with antibody B. Erythrocytosis was found in 3 generations of an English family. The red cell mass was only moderately increased in some of the affected members but was accompanied by an unusually low plasma volume. Oxygen affinity of Hb was normal. Changes in serum and urinary erythropoietin showed an essentially normal pattern throughout a series of venesections. Venesection produced some transient clinical benefit in the older patient but there was no obvious change in the younger ones.

To study the physiological regulation of atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP), we examined the effects of volume expansion and depletion and the influence of cardiopulmonary baroreflex on plasma ANP levels in pentobarbital-anesthetized male Wistar rats.
