BACKGROUND CONTEXT: The clinical morphology of a filum terminale arteriovenous fistula (f-AVF) is well known; however, pathological details of the fistulized portion are unknown. Herein, we report the pathological findings of the f-AVF.
STUDY DESIGN: Case report and literature review.
PURPOSE: To present a detailed pathological examination of the fistulized portion of the f-AVF.
METHODS: A 71-year-old man presented with gradually worsening bilateral foot paresthesias and anal dysesthesia. T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging showed flow voids surrounding an edematous conus medullaris and

Intradural renal cell carcinoma (RCC) metastasis is rare. We report a case of an 81-year-old female presenting with acute cauda equina syndrome (CES), secondary to intradural RCC metastasis haemorrhage. To our knowledge this is the first case of CES secondary to acute haemorrhage within an intradural RCC metastasis.

We present the case of a 50-year-old male with lumbosacral epidural abscess as a distant iatrogenic sequella of a post-injection phlegmon of the forearm. The progressive and inconspicuous course of the illness, its complex clinical picture, neurologic manifestation in the form of cauda equina syndrome, and multidisciplinary approach to diagnosis and treatment in this patient make this case worthy of particular attention. We decided on a combined therapy consisting of surgery and pathogen-directed antibiotic treatment. Continuous follow-up confirmed therapeutic success and restoration of a norm

The results of treatment patients suffering from syndroma caudae equinae (SCE) are not generally satisfactory. The authors decided to evaluate occurrence according to etiology and permanent consequences after treatment in patients that were treated at the Department of Neurosurgery P. J. Safarik University Hospital in Kosice during 12 years (1996-2007). 95 patients from the 101 members file had SCE caused by disc herniation or spinal stenosis. Rare etiology of SCE was found in the six cases: three had traumatic origin, one spinal epidural abscess, one tumor. SCE developed after surgery of inte

INTRODUCTION: Cauda equina syvndrome from lumbar disc herniation accounts for up to 2-3% of all disc herniations. The aim of this study was to investigate whether recovery of bladder function after surgery depends on preoperative duration of desease.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: This retrospective study included 47 patients who underwent surgery for cauda equina syndrome due to a herniated disc in the period between 1997 and 2002. Eleven patients were female and 36 male, with a mean age of 43 years (range 23-67). All presented with sciatica and saddle hypoesthesia, whereas 13 presented with motor we

Neurological complications of infectious mononucleosis were seen in three patients, a boy aged 18 months and two women aged 70 and 51 years respectively: a Bell's palsy, polyradiculitis and transverse myelitis. In a patient with acute neurological symptoms without indications of any other cause, infectious mononucleosis should be considered.

Initial neurological disorders in a patient with primary lymphoma of the nervous system were due to multiple lumbosacral root and meningeal lesions. Recovery after intrathecal methotrexate was followed ten years later by a relapse when lesions were localized in a cerebral hemisphere.

Specific serological methods now enable us to demonstrate that Mycoplasma Pneumoniae is responsible for a variety of neurological symptoms. We describe 12 new cases: 2 encephalites, 8 diffuse polyradiculoneurites and 2 isolated lesions of the cranial nerves. These 12 cases, together with the 42 recorded in the literature, bring total number of published cases to 54. Analysis emphasizes the extreme polymorphism of the neurological manifestations and their favourable prognosis in most cases, however serious the initial symptoms. Although the pathogenesis of neurological symptoms produced by Myco

BACKGROUND: Symptoms of cauda equina syndrome (CES) secondary to degenerative lumbar spine diseases are sometimes mild and tend to be ignored by patients, resulting in delayed treatment. In addition, the long-term efficacy of surgery is unclear.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the predictive factors of CES and post-operative recovery in patients with symptoms lasting > 3 months.
METHODS: From January 2011 to December 2020, data of 45 patients with CES secondary to lumbar disk herniation/lumbar spinal stenosis were collected from a single center. The patients had bladder, bowel or sexual dysfunction

BACKGROUND: We report a series of 3 cases of metastatic thymoma to the spine with spinal cord compression. An extensive literature review of thymic metastases to the spine was completed to provide a comprehensive appraisal of current prognostic indicators and potential treatment algorithms to help guide clinicians in treatment management.
CASE DESCRIPTIONS: Between 2000 and 2017, 3 patients received diagnoses of thymic metastases to the spine at our institution. Metastasis presentation occurred from 2 to 8 years after the initial diagnosis with thymic cancer. All 3 patients presented with sig

This is the case report of a contained ruptured aortic aneurysm presenting with acute cauda equina syndrome. The patient was a 79-year-old man. A literature search revealed various unusual presentations of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA), including femoral neuropathy, hip pain and others; however, there are no other reports of cauda equina-like syndrome. The present case is therefore another unusual presentation of ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm and reiterates the utmost importance of careful history taking and clinical examination. Abdominal aortic aneurysm rupture should always be consid

Hemangioblastoma (HB) is uncommon, with only a few cases of hemangioblastoma with von Hippel-Lindau disease (VHL) located in cauda equina previously reported. We describe a case of hemangioblastoma misdiagnosed as nerve sheath tumour in the cauda equina.
