Epidemiology of Disorders Associated with Short Stature in Childhood: A 20-Year Birth Cohort Study in Finland.

BACKGROUND: Many primary and secondary disorders disturb growth and cause short stature (height below -2 SDS) in childhood. Growth monitoring programs aim at their early detection but are not evidence-based: epidemiology of childhood growth disorders is poorly characterized, and no consensus exists on priority target conditions. Herein, we describe population-based epidemiological data on several primary and secondary growth disorders associated with short stature in childhood. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective population-based 20-year birth cohort study examined 1 144 503 children (5

Effects of temperature, salinity and composition of the dinoflagellate assemblage on the growth of Gambierdiscus carpenteri isolated from the Great Barrier Reef.

Increases in reported incidence of ciguatera fish poisoning (hereafter ciguatera) have been linked to warmer sea temperatures that are known to trigger coral bleaching events. The drivers that trigger blooms of ciguatera-causing dinoflagellates on the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) are poorly understood. This study investigated the effects of increased temperatures and lowered salinities, often associated with environmental disturbance events, on the population growth of two strains of the potentially ciguatera-causing dinoflagellate, Gambierdiscus carpenteri (NQAIF116 and NQAIF380). Both strains we…

Human-induced expanded distribution of Anopheles plumbeus, experimental vector of West Nile virus and a potential vector of human malaria in Belgium.

For the majority of native species, human-created habitats provide a hostile environment that prevents their colonization. However, if the conditions encountered in this novel environment are part of the fundamental niche of a particular species, these low competitive environments may allow strong population expansion of even rare and stenotopic species. If these species are potentially harmful to humans, such anthropogenic habitat alterations may impose strong risks for human health. Here, we report on a recent and severe outbreak of the viciously biting and day-active mosquito Anopheles plum

Lessons from diarrheal diseases: demography to molecular pharmacology.

From diarrheal diseases come profound lessons about health and population growth, microbial pathogenesis, and the molecular pharmacology of signal transduction. Epidemics such as cholera, hemorrhagic colitis, salmonellosis, and cryptosporidiosis remind us of how interdependent we are, sharing enteric microbial flora on a global scale. Diarrhea morbidity and mortality teach us that disease and poverty do not control but are associated with population overgrowth. Great advances are being made in understanding new bacterial, viral, and parasitic causes and treatment of diarrhea, especially persis…

Growth of abused children. Contrasted with the non-abused in an urban poor community.

While the identification of a growth-retarded or otherwise undernourished child suggests a diagnosis of child abuse or neglect, it is not certain that abused children from poor communities are less well nourished than children living in similar environments. The setting of this study--day care centers in an urban poor city--provided an opportunity to make this comparison with appropriate community-based controls. Measures of height, weight, and weight/height (Body Mass Index (BMI] were compared for 196 children, 2 to 6 years of age, 53 of whom were victims of physical abuse. The data was adjus

Evolutionary Strategies for Body Size.

Humans show marked variation in body size around the world, both within and among populations. At present, the tallest people in the world are from the Netherlands and the Balkan countries, while the shortest populations are central African Pygmies. There are genetic, genetic plasticity, developmental, and environmental bases for size variation in Homo sapiens from the recent past and the present. Early populations of Homo species also have shown considerable size variation. Populations from the present and the past are also marked by sexual dimorphism, which, itself, shows group variation. Th

Growth factor-responsive progenitors in the postnatal mammalian retina.

It is thought that the adult mammalian retina lacks the regenerative capacity of fish and amphibians retina because it does not harbor a progenitor population. However, recent observations suggest that another derivative of the optic neuroepithelium, the ciliary body, contains a mitotically quiescent population of neural progenitors that proliferate in the presence of growth factors and demonstrate properties of neural stem cells. Examination of the hypothesis that similar mitotically quiescent and growth factor-responsive progenitors may exist in the postnatal retina revealed a population of

Increasing Burden of Early-Onset Cancers: Disentangling the Contributions of Changes in Risk from Demographic Shifts.

UNLABELLED: The burden of early-onset cancers is increasing, attracting scientific and media attention. There is, however, a need to disentangle the contribution of changes in risk, that is, age-standardized rate, due to changes in carcinogenic exposure or detection practices, from the contribution of population growth and aging, and to determine how these contributions differ for later-onset cancers. Using cancer registry data, we estimated these contributions in Switzerland between 1982 and 2021. Early-onset cancers include any cancer diagnosed in adults between 20 and 49 years, whereas late…

US Evaluation of Bone Age in Rural Ecuadorian Children: Association with Anthropometry and Nutrition.

Background Stunted growth and development is a serious global public health problem. A limited number of field measures exist that can be used to evaluate stunting and its underlying biologic mechanisms. Purpose To assess bone age using tablet-based US in young children living in a rural community in Ecuador, where stunting is prevalent, and to evaluate the associations between bone age, anthropometry, and diet. Materials and Methods From June through August 2017, tablet-based US was used to assess bone age in young children within their homes in rural Cotopaxi, Ecuador. Bone age z scores (BAZ

Potentials for win-win alliances among animal agriculture and forest products industries: application of the principles of industrial ecology and sustainable development.

Commercial forests in many parts of the world are deficient in nitrogen and phosphorus. These nutrient-deficient forests often exist in close proximity to large animal feeding operations, meat processing and other food, textile, or other biomass-processing plants, and municipal waste treatment facilities. Many of these facilities produce large surpluses of nitrogen, phosphorus, and organic matter as gaseous ammonia, urea, uric acid, phosphorus compounds, bacterial sludges, and partially treated municipal wastewaters. These co-existing and substantial nutrient deficiencies and surpluses offer r

Fertility, infertility and generation replacement.

Throughout most of human history 'natural fertility' and life expectations of about 35 years kept population numbers reasonably balanced; but the achievement of life expectations of 75 or more years destroyed this 'natural' system. As longevity increased amongst Western peoples, explosive growth rates were only prevented by increasingly efficient checks on fertility. Today, these checks are so universal and so efficient in Australia and in many other Western countries that 'intrinsic' levels of fertility are below generation replacement level. Changes in fecundity were not a significant factor

Individual predictions based on nonlinear mixed modeling: application to prenatal twin growth.

The assessment of growth during fetal life and childhood commonly relies upon cross'sectional reference ranges or centiles. However, individual sequential predictions may help the timewise assessment of a growth process. In twin pregnancies for example, which are at risk of growth restriction, such predictions may improve the detection of abnormal trajectories. In this article, we present a simple forecasting method, assuming that a given normal individual behaves in the same way as a reference population. We consider, as a prediction in a given individual, the forecast of a future observation

New Israeli Sonographic Estimated Fetal Weight Growth Curves as Compared to Current Birth Weight Growth Curves: On What Should Diagnosis of Intrauterine Growth Disorders Be Based?

BACKGROUND: Two types of growth curves are commonly used to diagnose fetal growth disorders: neonatal birth weight (BW) and sonographic estimated fetal weight (EFW). The debate as to which growth curve to use is universal. OBJECTIVES: To establish sonographic EFW growth curves for the Israeli population and to assess whether the use of the BW growth curves currently adapted in Israel leads to under-diagnosis of intrauterine growth disorders. METHODS: Biometric data collected during a 6 year period was analyzed to establish sonographic EFW growth curves between 15-42 weeks of gestation for th
