[Vitamin B12 levels in the patient population attending an urban health centre in Madrid].

INTRODUCTION: Vitamin B12 levels are usually measured in Primary Care when the patients have symptoms or risk factors associated with its deficiency, mostly in the elderly. However, no evidence has been found to support the recommendation of screening in the general population. The aim of this study is to assess the relevance of having extended the screening of vitamin B12 deficiency to a younger population, after observing an increase in the prescription of this injected vitamin in a population under 65 years, by analysing the vitamin B12 values obtained. MATERIAL AND METHOD: A descriptive,

Brief communication: A re-evaluation of the health index of southern Brazilian shellmound populations.

OBJECTIVES: The southern Brazilian shellmounds provide archaeological evidence of prolonged human activity in the coast from approximately 6000 to 1000 BP. Shellmound building populations exploited the rich coastal estuarine zones, and the human remains recovered from them are important sources of information on health and overall lifestyle of these mid-Holocene groups. Therefore, they were included in the Western Hemisphere Global History of Health project. The shellmounds contribute the highest Health Index in the Western Hemisphere, but these conclusions are based on collections that exclud

What works in inclusion health: overview of effective interventions for marginalised and excluded populations.

Inclusion health is a service, research, and policy agenda that aims to prevent and redress health and social inequities among the most vulnerable and excluded populations. We did an evidence synthesis of health and social interventions for inclusion health target populations, including people with experiences of homelessness, drug use, imprisonment, and sex work. These populations often have multiple overlapping risk factors and extreme levels of morbidity and mortality. We identified numerous interventions to improve physical and mental health, and substance use; however, evidence is scarce

Creating a Powerful Platform to Explore Health in a Correctional Population: A Record Linkage Study.

We used record linkage to create a data repository of health information of persons who were federally incarcerated in Ontario and Canada. We obtained records from 56,867 adults who were federally incarcerated between January 1, 1998 and December 31, 2011 from the Correctional Service of Canada; 15,248 records belonged to individuals residing in Ontario, Canada. We linked these records to the Registered Persons Database (RPDB) which contained records from 18,116,996 individuals eligible for health care in Ontario. Out of 56,867 OMS records, 22,844 (40.2%) were linked to the RPDB. Looking only

Untreated hypertension in the UK household population - Who are missed by the general health checks?

Hypertension is an age-related, long-term condition and a leading risk factor for premature death and disability worldwide. Due to its asymptomatic nature it can often be left undiagnosed. Long-term treatment is available, but blood pressure can also be reduced through health behaviour changes in weight control, smoking cessation, higher physical activity levels, reduced salt and alcohol intake, and healthful diets if discovered early. This paper investigates the prevalence and characteristics of those with untreated (compared to treated) hypertension who did not have a history of cardiovascul

Population Distributions of Thymic Function in Adults: Variation by Sociodemographic Characteristics and Health Status.

The thymus is critical for mounting an effective immune response and maintaining health. However, epidemiologic studies characterizing thymic function in the population setting are lacking. Using data from 263 adults in the Detroit Neighborhood Health Study, we examined thymic function as measured by the number of signal joint T-cell receptor excision circles (sjTREC) and assessed associations with established indicators of physiological health. Overall, increasing age and male gender were significantly associated with reduced thymic function. Adjusting for covariates, individuals with elevate

Health Maintenance Deficits in a Fully Insured Population of Adolescents With Chronic Medical Conditions.

The current national monitoring of routine wellness care and vaccine uptake does not provide data on health maintenance among pediatric populations with chronic medical conditions. In this case-control study that analyzes wellness visits and vaccine uptake among adolescents, ages 16 to 18 years, we identified 938 without (controls) and 74 with (cases) 1 of 12 specific chronic medical conditions. The PPSV23 (23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine) is recommended by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices for these 12 conditions and served as a measure of uptake for medically ind

Prognostic implications of intraventricular conduction delays in a general population: the Health 2000 Survey.

AIMS: We examined the prognostic impact of eight different intraventricular conduction delays (IVCD) in the standard electrocardiogram (ECG) in a community cohort. METHODS AND RESULTS: Data were collected from 6299 Finnish individuals. During a mean 8.2 years (interquartile range 8.1 to 8.3) of follow-up 640 subjects died (10.2%); 277 (4.4%) were cardiovascular deaths. For both sexes, all-cause and cardiovascular mortality was higher in subjects with IVCD than in those without. In Cox regression analysis after adjustment for age and gender, the hazard ratio for cardiovascular mortality for no

Assessment of the quality of the childhood physical abuse measure in the National Population Health Survey.

BACKGROUND: The long-term health consequences of childhood physical abuse are often studied using retrospective self-reports collected from adults. This study assesses the quality of a question on childhood physical abuse in the National Population Health Survey (NPHS). DATA AND METHODS: All NPHS respondents aged 18 or older (n = 15,027) were asked a question about childhood physical abuse in cycles 1 (1994/1995), 7 (2006/2007) and 8 (2008/2009). The reliability of this question was assessed over these periods. Associations between response patterns to the abuse item and health conditions tha…

Stressful childhood experiences and health outcomes in sexual minority populations: a systematic review.

PURPOSE: Stressful childhood experiences (SCE) are associated with many different health outcomes, such as psychiatric symptoms, physical illnesses, alcohol and drug abuse, and victimization experiences. Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people are at risk to be victims of SCE and show higher prevalence of SCE when compared with heterosexual controls. METHODS: This review analyzed systematically 73 articles that addressed different types of SCE in sexual minority populations and included items of household dysfunction. The samples included adults who identified either their sexua

Stray animal populations and public health in the South Mediterranean and the Middle East regions.

Uncontrolled urban growth in South Mediterranean and the Middle East regions involves city dwellers and stray animals (mainly dogs and cats) creating a dense and downgraded environment, in which irregular street garbage collection disposes sufficient food for survival and proliferation of stray animals. Under such conditions serious public health hazards are expected due to the increase of animal bites, the multiplication of insects and rodents vectors of different viral, bacterial, fungal and parasitic agents to which humans are exposed. Traditional national stray animal eradication programs

[The application of the multidimensional statistical methods in the evaluation of the influence of atmospheric pollution on the population's health].

The search and measurement of causal relationships between exposure to air pollution and health state of the population is based on the system analysis and risk assessment to improve the quality of research. With this purpose there is applied the modern statistical analysis with the use of criteria of independence, principal component analysis and discriminate function analysis. As a result of analysis out of all atmospheric pollutants there were separated four main components: for diseases of the circulatory system main principal component is implied with concentrations of suspended solids, n

Meta-analysis of adverse health effects due to air pollution in Chinese populations.

BACKGROUND: Pooled estimates of air pollution health effects are important drivers of environmental risk communications and political willingness. In China, there is a lack of review studies to provide such estimates for health impact assessments. METHODS: We systematically searched the MEDLINE database using keywords of 80 major Chinese cities in Mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan on 30 June 2012, yielding 350 abstracts with 48 non-duplicated reports either in English or Chinese after screening. We pooled the relative risks (RR) per 10 μg/m3 of particulate matter (PM10), nitrogen dioxide (

Perceived met and unmet health-care needs in a community population with multiple sclerosis.

Community-based studies are required to accurately describe the supportive services needed by people with multiple sclerosis (MS). Characteristics that influence (or result from) care-seeking may introduce bias into other types of studies. The Participation and Activity Limitation Survey (PALS) was a post-census survey conducted by Statistics Canada in association with a 2006 national census. The PALS collected data from a sample of 22,513 respondents having health-related impairments according to their census forms. The survey collected self-reported diagnostic data and obtained ratings for i
