A basic posture control mechanism: the stabilization of the centre of gravity.

Holding the body's centre of gravity steady represents the crucial variable for the stabilization of posture in upright stance in man. The visual, vestibular and muscle proprioceptive systems have all been shown to contribute to sway stabilization. Nevertheless, earlier work has suggested that an additional receptor system is needed to signal the position of the body's centre of gravity relative to the support surface, i.e., the feet. This proposed receptor system should be 'gravity' dependent. To evaluate the properties of this receptor system, an experiment was designed under simulated 'micr…

[Analysis of CSF flow through L-P shunt during changes in posture].

Two methods for percutaneous study of lumboperitoneal shunt patency are described. The first is an LP shuntography in which patency of the shunt can be assessed by the intraperitoneal spread of contrast medium injected intrathecally via the lumbar route. This method was performed in 27 hydrocephalic patients. The other is a thermosensitive determination technique, in which patency of the shunt can be assessed by definite temperature changes. In a patient with an LP shunt, flow of CSF, and hence patency of the shunt, are indicated by a downward deflection of the recording trace. Twenty-three tr

Effects of posture in hiatus hernia as studied by oesophageal pH measurement.

The use of postural restriction in the treatment of patients with hiatus hernia has been analysed using continuous oesophageal pH measurements. It appears that it is not effective in the prevention of reflux of acid. The percentage of the time during which oesophageal pH remains below 5 is not significantly different when comparison is made during periods of sitting and lying. The frequency of reflux episodes is actually greater in the sitting position, but the duration of each reflux episode is significantly shorter than when lying. It is suggested that the undoubted symptomatic benefit deriv

The Effect of Roll Circular Vection on Roll Tilt Postural Responses and Roll Subjective Postural Horizontal of Healthy Normal Subjects.

Background: Falls and related injuries are critical issues in several disease states, as well as aging, especially when interactions between vestibular and visual sensory inputs are involved. Slow support surface tilt (0.6 deg/s) followed by subjective postural horizontal (SPH) assessments have been proposed as a viable method for assessing otolith contributions to balance control. Previous assessments of perceived body alignment to vertical, including subjective visual vertical, have suggested that visual inputs are weighted more when vestibular information is near the threshold and less reli

Reactive postural adjustment in response to predictable and unpredictable perturbations in healthy adults: A comparison between swayback, hyperlordotic and erect postures.

BACKGROUND: Promoting an erect posture in standing has been advocated to offer superior protection to the spine when compared to hyperlordotic and swayback postures. RESEARCH QUESTION: Do postural adjustments towards external perturbation differ between erect, hyperlordotic and swayback postures? If so, which posture offers better protection to lumbar spine? METHODS: Forty-four healthy adults received top-down perturbations under unpredictable (without visual-and-auditory input) and predictable (with visual-and-auditory input) conditions in three simulated postures: erect, hyperlordotic, and…

Excessive Postural Tachycardia and Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome in Youth: Associations With Distress, Impairment, Health Behaviors, and Medication Recommendations.

Among adolescents with fatigue and postural dizziness, it is unclear how health behaviors and emotional distress relate to the presence of excessive postural tachycardia. We prospectively evaluated adolescents aged 13-22 years presenting with symptoms suggestive of autonomic dysfunction between September 2017 and December 2018. Patients underwent standard 10-minute, 70-degree head-up tilt testing. Clinician diagnoses and recommendations were recorded from the medical record. Patients completed validated self-report measures of lifestyle factors, autonomic symptoms, depression, anxiety, and fun

Effects of Plyometric Exercises versus Flatfoot Corrective Exercises on Postural Control and Foot Posture in Obese Children with a Flexible Flatfoot.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

BACKGROUND: Obesity contributes to the acquired flatfoot deformity which in turn impairs balance. AIM: The purpose of the current study was to compare the effect of plyometric exercises with flatfoot corrective exercises on balance, foot posture, and functional mobility in obese children with a flexible flatfoot. METHODS: Forty-seven children participated in the study. Their age ranged from 7 to 11 years. Participants were randomly divided into 3 groups: experimental group I (EGI), experimental group II (EGII), and the control group (CG). The EGI received plyometric exercises and the EGII re…

External postural perturbations induce multiple anticipatory postural adjustments when subjects cannot pre-select their stepping foot.

Previous research on human balance recovery suggests that, prior to an externally triggered postural perturbation, healthy subjects can pre-select their postural response based on the environmental context, but it is unclear whether this pre-selection includes the selection of a stepping leg when performing compensatory steps. We sought to determine how pre-selecting a stepping limb affects the compensatory steps and stability of young, healthy subjects when responding to postural perturbations. Nine healthy subjects (24-37 years of age) stepped in response to backward translations of a platfo

Effects of a postural cueing for head and neck posture on lumbar lordosis angles in healthy young and older adults: a preliminary study.

BACKGROUND: Postural rehabilitation plays an important role in the treatment of non-specific low back pain. Although pelvic inclination has been widely used to improve lumbar lordosis, the effect of cervical anterior inclination on lumbar lordosis in young and older adults in sitting and standing posture is still unclear. This preliminary study was designed to examine the influence of changing the cervical anterior angle on the lumbar lordosis angle, through alterations of the head position under the natural sitting and standing conditions, aiming to provide a basis for establishing a new post…

Postural sway in the moving room scenario: New evidence for functional dissociation between self-motion perception and postural control.

Postural control in quiet standing is often explained by a reflexive response to optical flow, the apparent motion of environmental objects … lly expanding and contracting random dots, and the stimuli speed and visual field were manipulated. Posture was continually evaluated using Center of Pressure (CoP) measurements. Participants were also asked to report feelings of vection, both by pressing a button during the trial and through an overall rating at the end of each trial. Using repeated-meas …

A new approach to characterize postural deficits in chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy and to analyze postural adaptions after an exercise intervention.

BACKGROUND: Postural instability presents a common and disabling consequence of chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN). However, … stural deficit may relate to underuse of proprioceptive information that results in a less accurate posture control as spontaneous sway results indicate. The balance-based exercise intervention is able to partially correct for this abnormality. Our study contributes to a better understanding of postural impairments in CIPN patients and suggests an effecti …

Postural visual dependence in asymptomatic type 2 diabetic patients without peripheral neuropathy during a postural challenging task.

UNLABELLED: Increasing evidence indicates that diabetes may negatively affect vestibular function, and postural control more so under postural challenging conditions. Healthy and diabetic subjects were compared on visual control of posture during a postural challenging task. METHODS: Forty-eight asymptomatic patients with type 2 diabetes free of peripheral neuropathy and 29 age-matched normal subjects were compared on postural stability on a high-density foam block with computerized posturography. Sway parameters were measured and Romberg ratios calculated and compared between the two groups.…

Influence of cervical spine stabilization via Stiff Neck on the postural system in healthy patients: compensation or decompensation of the postural system?

Functional and structural disorders of the cervical spine are often regarded as the cause of non-specific vertigo. Pathogenetically, disorders of proprioceptive connections between neck muscles and vestibular cores as well as the proprioceptors in the cervical facette joints are presumed. According to a study by Hülse and Hölzl (HNO 48:295-301, 1), after manual therapeutic intervention in patients with functional disorders of the cervical spine 50% of the probands stated a significant reduction of their vertigo. This was backed up in posturography, which documented an improvement in vestibulos

Diagnostic significance of rhythmicity in postural hand tremor.

Rhythmicity is an important feature of tremor that is widely viewed as having diagnostic significance. We hypothesized that rhythmicity might be a generic function of tremor severity, reflecting greater oscillatory entrainment of motor pathways. Postural hand tremor and forearm electromyograms were recorded from 49 controls, 78 Parkinson patients, and 133 essential tremor patients. Rhythmicity was quantified in terms of approximate entropy and three measures of cycle-to-cycle frequency variability: tremor stability index, cycle-to-cycle variability, and power spectral bandwidth. Physiological

Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS): A Review.

IMPORTANCE: Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) is a chronic autonomic disorder characterized by excessive orthostatic tachycardia and multisystem symptoms that affects an estimated 0.1% to 1% of the US population. POTS can substantially impair daily functioning and quality of life. OBSERVATIONS: Consensus criteria define POTS by chronic symptoms of orthostatic intolerance accompanied by a sustained heart rate increase of at least 30 beats/min (≥40 beats/min in adolescents aged 12-19 years) within 10 minutes of standing or head-up tilt, in the absence of orthostatic hypotension,

Late Chronotype Is Associated With Dizziness and Postural Instability.

OBJECTIVES: Sleep has been reported to be associated with dizziness. However, its relationship with chronotype, a behavioral manifestation of circadian rhythms reflecting individual variation in sleep-activity timing, has not been widely investigated. This study aimed to examine the association between chronotype and dizziness and its related symptom profiles. METHODS: From the eighth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2021), 3766 participants with information on demographics, underlying diseases, dizziness, and sleep pattern were included after excluding 19 individuals w

Audition and balance: The impact of echolocation on postural control.

The links between the perception of acoustic signals and postural control remain largely unexplored, and the control models proposed to date have yet to assign these sensory inputs a role alongside visual, proprioceptive, and vestibular information. Research on this topic has produced varied conclusions, likely due to significant methodological differences. Our study makes novel contributions by aiming to determine the impact of the auditory system-specifically through the perception of echoes-on postural control during quiet standing and to identify the potential link between auditory percept

Postural control depends on early visual experience.

The present study investigated the role of early visual experience in the development of postural control (balance) and locomotion (gait). In a cross-sectional design, balance and gait were assessed in 59 participants (ages 7-43 years) with a history of (a) transient congenital blindness, (b) transient late-onset blindness, (c) permanent congenitally blindness, or (d) permanent late-onset blindness, as well as in normally sighted controls. Cataract-reversal participants who experienced a transient phase of blindness and gained sight through cataract removal surgery showed worse balance perform
