More than a medical condition: a theoretical exploration of infertility's hidden burden.

BACKGROUND: Beyond its biological aspects, infertility interacts with systemic injustices, social stigma, and psychosocial pressures. To critically examine how infertility is experienced, mediated by gendered norms, structural barriers, and identity conflicts, this study draws on theoretical perspective of infertility as a socially entrenched issue by combining various concepts. METHODS: This narrative review explores the psychological aspect of infertility with the synthesis of peer-reviewed articles. Literatures are critically analyzed using three theoretical frameworks (Stress and Coping T

The power with us: experiences of resisting oppression among Black women physicians in academic medicine.

Black women physicians often face bias, discrimination, and mistreatment within the academic environment because of their racial and gender identities. This shows up as microaggressions, exclusion, and minimal opportunities to advance their careers despite their expertise, contributions, and leadership to support institutions with creating environments that prioritize broad representation, welcoming and respectful spaces, and addressing barriers that prohibit individuals from thriving. Their first-hand experiences with intersecting oppressions told in their own voices as clinicians, educators,

The mediating role of psychological empowerment in perceptions of decent work and work immersion among Chinese nurses: A cross-sectional study.

AIM: The purpose of this study was to explore the relationships among perceptions of decent work, psychological empowerment, and work immersion among nurses, hypothesizing that psychological empowerment mediates the relationship between perceptions of decent work and work immersion. BACKGROUND: At present, there are many studies on nurses' perceptions of decent labor and work immersion in China, but the relationship between them has not been discussed from a psychological perspective. METHODS: The sample consisted of clinical nurses in Jiangxi, Zhejiang, Hubei, and Guangdong provinces, China

An examination of ethnic identity as a mediator of the effects of community participation and neighborhood sense of community on psychological empowerment among urban youth of color.

Empowerment research has made important contributions toward understanding youth development, well-being, and activism; however, it has failed to consider the impact that ethnic identity has on psychological empowerment (PE) and among related empowerment predictors (e.g., community participation and neighborhood sense of community [SOC]). The present study focuses on examining the mediating role of ethnic identity between community participation, neighborhood SOC, and PE. Using structural equation modeling path analysis techniques among a sample of Hispanic and Black youth (N = 1,480) from an

The impact of free healthcare on women's capability: A qualitative study in rural Burkina Faso.

In March 2006, the government of Burkina Faso implemented an 80% subsidy for emergency obstetric and neonatal care (EmONC). To complement this subsidy, an NGO decided to cover the remaining 20% in two districts of the country, making EmONC completely free for women there. In addition, the NGO instituted fee exemptions for children under five years of age in those two districts. We conducted a qualitative study in 2011 to examine the impact of these free healthcare interventions on women's capability. We conducted semi-structured interviews with 40 women, 16 members of health centre management

Gendered discourses of youth sexualities--an exploration of PubMed articles on prevention of sexually transmissible infections.

OBJECTIVE: To explore how gender is addressed in medical articles on the prevention of sexually transmissible infections (STI) among adolescents. METHODS: Sixtyone articles were retrieved from a PubMed search and scrutinized by qualitative content analysis. RESULTS: Most articles were affiliated with North American research institutions, but there were also reports from Europe, Africa, South America, and Asia. Gender turned up in the following four recurrent discourses: Gendered Receptiveness for Information, Stereotyped Heterosexual Expectations, Power Imbalance in Sexual Relations, and Gen

Money, power and HIV: economic influences and HIV among men who have sex with men in sub-Saharan Africa.

Despite consistent evidence, effective interventions and political declarations to reduce HIV infections among men who have sex with men (MSM), coverage of MSM programmes in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) remains low. Punitive legal frameworks and hostile social circumstances and inadequate health systems further contribute to the high HIV burden among MSM in SSA. The authors use the Modified Social Ecological Model to discuss economic influences in relation to HIV and MSM in SSA. Nigerian, South African and Ugandan case studies are used to highlight economic factors and considerations related to HI

Relationship power as a mediator of intimate partner violence and mental health issues among incarcerated, substance-using women.

The purpose of this study was to examine perceived relationship power as a mediator of the relationship between intimate partner violence (IPV) and mental health issues among incarcerated women with a history of substance use. Cross-sectional data from 304 women as part of the Criminal Justice Drug Abuse Treatment Studies (CJ-DATS) were used to evaluate this hypothesis. Regression analyses examined the mediation relationship of perceived relationship power in the association between a history of IPV and mental health issues. Results supported the hypothesis, suggesting that perceived relations

Bridging the distance between the objectivism of research and the subjectivity of the researcher.

A phenomenological study of researchers' experience of their work is presented. The disparity between researchers' subjective experience and the inherent objectivism of science and research is discussed. Bridging the distance between the immediate experience of research and the positivistic/objectivistic nature of research is proposed as a way to keep the research community cognizant of values and beliefs that may get pushed aside in the clamor for factual information and material gain. A synthesis of intentionality is discussed as a method for disclosing a researcher's constitutive part in ph

Gender power imbalance on women's capacity to negotiate self-protection against HIV/AIDS in Botswana and South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Gender power imbalance, which translates into a power imbalance in sexual interactions, is increasingly being recognized as a factor in fueling the spread of HIV/AIDS by increasing the number of unsafe sexual encounters. OBJECTIVES: To examine the influence of gender power imbalance and other factors on women's capacity to negotiate self protection against HIV infection; as well as men's response to the suggested condom use. METHODS: Drawing on data gathered from 2658 women aged 18-49 years in a cross-sectional survey in Kwa Zulu Natal Province of South Africa and Botswana, the s

Multilevel analysis of women's empowerment and HIV prevention: quantitative survey Results from a preliminary study in Botswana.

This preliminary study explored relationships between women's empowerment and HIV prevention on the national and individual level with a focus on Botswana. Among sub-Saharan Africa countries, HIV prevalence was positively correlated with indirect indicators of women's empowerment relating to their education (female enrollment in secondary education and ratio of female to male secondary school enrollment), but not to their economic status (female share of paid employment in industry and services) or political status (women's share of seats in national parliament), while controlling for gross na

Chronic stress, leukocyte subpopulations, and humoral response to latent viruses.

Psychological stress has been shown to affect immune system status and function, but most studies of this relationship have focused on acute stress and/or laboratory situations. The present study compared total numbers of leukocytes and lymphocyte subpopulations (determined by flow cytometry) and antibody titers to latent and nonlatent viruses among a group of chronically stressed individuals living near the damaged Three Mile Island (TMI) nuclear power plant with those of a demographically comparable control group. Urinary catecholamine and cortisol levels were also examined. Residents of the

Personality differences among patients with chronic aphasia predict improvement in speech-language therapy.

BACKGROUND: Negative affectivity and neurocognitive deficits including executive dysfunction have been shown to be detrimental to rehabilitation therapies. However, research on the relationship between neuropsychological deficits and improvement in speech-language therapy (SLT) for aphasia is sparse. OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationships among neurocognitive and psychological functioning and improvement in SLT following aphasia due to stroke. METHODS: Fifty patients who were ≥ 9 months post stroke and enrolled in outpatient SLT to treat aphasia participated. Using standard language assessm

Power and sample size determination for group comparison of patient-reported outcomes using polytomous Rasch models.

The analysis of patient-reported outcomes or other psychological traits can be realized using the Rasch measurement model. When the objective of a study is to compare groups of individuals, it is important, before the study, to define a sample size such that the group comparison test will attain a given power. The Raschpower procedure (RP) allows doing so with dichotomous items. The RP is extended to polytomous items. Several computational issues were identified, and adaptations have been proposed. The performance of this new version of RP is assessed using simulations. This adaptation of RP a

What girls won't do for love: human immunodeficiency virus/sexually transmitted infections risk among young African-American women driven by a relationship imperative.

PURPOSE: Rates of Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) continue to increase among African-American youth. Adolescents who have a stronger identity in relation to others (relational identity) rather than to themselves (self-identity) may view intimate relationships as imperative to a positive self-concept, which may lead to risky sexual behavior and abuse. Therefore, the present study assessed the associations among a relationship imperative and HIV/STI-related risk factors and behaviors. METHODS: Participants were 715 African-American adolescent

From neurotic guilt to existential guilt as grief: the road to interiority, agency, and compassion through mourning. Part I.

This study proposes through a case illustration that psychoanalytic patients who can process both aggression and loss through a mourning process are able to free themselves from pathological self attack when the object relations work of attachment, psychic holding, and separation transpires. In the case of Helen discussed here, transformation through a "developmental mourning process" results in the evolution of powerful psychological capacities for interiority, self agency, and interpersonal compassion. This developmental mourning process is endowed with the assimilation and psychic fantasy s

The effect of randomised exposure to different types of natural outdoor environments compared to exposure to an urban environment on people with indications of psychological distress in Catalonia.

INTRODUCTION: Experimental studies have reported associations between short-term exposure to natural outdoor environments (NOE) and health benefits. However, they lack insight into mechanisms, often have low external and ecological validity, and have rarely focused on people with some psycho-physiological affection. The aim of this study was to use a randomized, case-crossover design to investigate: (i) the effects of unconstrained exposure to real natural and urban environments on psycho-physiological indicators of people with indications of psychological distress, (ii) the possible different
